The best way to strengthen reading skills and foster the reading habit is
to see that students get reading practice with books that are carefully
selected and matched to their reading level and interests.
What are Lexiles?
A Lexile text number represents a text’s difficulty level on the Lexile scale.
This number is based on sentence length and the number of times the words frequent the English
language.
Lexile Defined:
A Lexile reader number represents a person’s reading ability on the Lexile scale.
Lexile Defined:
Scholastic Reading Inventory is a computer-adaptive test.In a computer-adaptive test, students are dynamically presented with questions. When a student answers a question correctly, the next question will be harder; if the student answers a question incorrectly, the next question will be easier. The item selection process continues until a strong level of certainty of the test taker’s ability has been established, the test ends and a scale score is provided.
A Lexile reader number represents a person’s reading ability on the Lexile scale.
A Lexile text number represents a text’s difficulty level on the Lexile scale.
WHEN USED TOGETHER, THEY CAN HELPA READER CHOOSE A BOOK OR OTHER READING MATERIAL THAT
IS AT AN APPROPRIATE DIFFICULTY LEVEL.

Lexile Defined:Start with an SRI test, get the students' Lexile numbers and insist that they read in their reading range.
A person's Lexile range, or reading comprehension "sweet spot,"
is from 100L below to 50L above his or her reported Lexile measure.
Lexile Range
If your child’s Lexile is 450L.
Then your child’s Lexile Range is 350L to 500L.
For example:
-from below 0L for beginning readers and beginning-reading text
-to above 1700L for advanced readers and text.
The Lexile Scale Ranges…
When a student reads a text that matches his/her Lexile reader measure, this is called
a "Targeted" Reading Experience. This is the best way to grow as a reader—
with text that's not too hard but not too easy.

Not to Easy…but Just Right!
Students can search the library collection by their Lexile range:
Cabarrus County Schools use Destiny for library circulation.
Resource lists
Students can log in to Destiny and create lists of books in their Lexile range.
When they come to the library they log in and look for book availability from their list.
The list can be printed and brought to the library, but they won’t know if the book is in or out until they go to the shelves.
Royal Oaks:Our staff decided that it would be best to put Lexile stickers on the outside of the books to make it easier for the students to locate books on their Lexile number. If the book does not have a Lexile dot on the outside, then the book does not have a Lexile number.

There are a lot of factors that determine how students will perform on the SRI test:
• Sleepy?• Hungry?• Mad?• Distracted?• Hot/Cold?
How much should you expect students to grow each year?
What about the students who are in the 800s, 900s, or 1000s?
These students have successfully learned to read!
Let them read more freely.
Loosen the reigns or you’ll make them HATE to read.
Stock your shelves with interesting, level appropriate books in all Lexile ranges.
Encourage them to read Nonfiction.
Attitudes about reading have changed!

*I don’t want to finish this book.*I didn’t understand this book.
*I don’t like to read.*This book was awesome!
Now they say…*Do you have another book like this one!
*I need another book!*I’m almost finished with my book!
To review the roles of the teacher, student and librarian…
Student’s Role:
• Take the SRI test seriously to determine the Lexilenumber.
• Select books from your Lexile Range so that you will become a better reader.
• Use Destiny to create lists.• Remember the school’s policy for checkout: One
book in range, one free choice.• Ask for help if you don’t know what to check out.• Keep reading no matter what!!!

When we give away books, they are marked with Lexile
numbers.
Teacher’s Role:• Make sure they are taking the SRI test seriously and do
not give it more than once a quarter.
• Require the Lexile number be used for at least one library book--they are allowed to get two. Write the number down for them to take to the library.
• Conference with students about what they are reading. Make sure they are comprehending the books they are reading. Make sure it is reflected in the Lexile range. You can adjust the range if the comprehension is not on mark.
• Communicate with the parents about reading expectations.
• Make a plan for those students who are not progressing.
• Make time for reading in class.
• Make sure the students know you value reading.
• Give students time to make and use the resource list in Destiny.
• Lexile Classroom Library.
• Recognize achievement in your classroom!!
And finally…• Monitor SRI testing using reports provided in
the program.
