page. ● Hats back in stock. ● Senior shirts in process for 2020. Discussion regarding process, including cost and date for orders (shirts with names on them must be ordered in

November; senior shirts that don’t have names on the back will be available in the uniform shop. Comment was that buying more than one shirt ($46 each) with short notice is expensive. Suggestion to include the cost of shirts in the year 5 book list so that parents know what the cost is; have a reminder in the last newsletter in Term 3 that the cost is coming up. Kendall to look into if anyone might need an assistance fund for the shirts (Amanda)

● Bucket hats have been ordered.

b. Tuckshop (see attached) ● Internet troubles due to laptop issues; school lent laptop; now have portable wifi and using old laptop and tablet. Working well at present. ● Summer menu running ● Vic Daley (interim chair person – Claire Scott away at present)

c. Sharks (see attached) ● Report received. ● Squad classes filling, learn to swim flier drop to be done soon. ● Canteen convenor – Alisha Kite. Increase in profits across the canteen, bar. ● 2020 captains announced - Captains Maddie P, Ollie M; Vice Captains Lexi W, Hamish W

● Training style discussed, to be changed. ● Volunteer schedule implemented ● Request for additional pool keys; being followed up. ● Costings on hot water/bathroom upgrades – currently underway.

d. OSHC (see attached)

● Enrolments opened to current families; opens to Preps on expressions of interest list next week, general public after that. ● OSHC volunteer – has been advised he doesn’t need a blue card as he is under 18. Leanne to forward copy of letter from Blue Card Services so

that we have them on record (to P&C exec) ● Discussion re: historical debts – to be discussed between David and Kate. Confirmation of processes regarding former debt. David to get the

paperwork in order for this (to particularly cover people who may come back and want to re-enrol). ● Discussed case of a child whose enrolment was cancelled due to non-payment and no payment plan being in place. Need to have a follow up

letter that says the enrolment is cancelled. To have a template form to send out these letters from the P&C, not from OSHC, school. ● Back racks ordered through the school. Action – follow up with Katie around bag racks – where are they, have they been ordered. ● Printer has arrived, cords have been ordered, to be connected to the computer system. ● Carpet cleaning arranged for Wednesday. ● QCAN members meeting (hosted at Sherwood SS); have been asked to host another one on November 5. Amanda to get back to OSHC tomorrow

to advise if that is ok. ● Compiling list of PD for staff; to be sent to David ● OSHC meeting to be held; to elect new committee members. ● Four weeks of summer holiday care programming. Environment and sustainability, the arts (dance, music), summer sports, First Nations people.

e. Fete

● Meeting last week, tie up loose ends. Formal submission in Nov meeting for funds for the Fete in 2020. ● Have lost three main committee members; to be addressed in 2020. ● Alison Lees to be the Green Initiative champion, is having costing done for some of these items. ● Need to reconcile debit cards in next couple of weeks. ● Need approval for rides – being booked in the next couple of weeks and will need to pay a deposit (ABC rides) ● Need to do a risk assessment; some sort of activity for kids in the evening.

auditing/reporting purposes. To be discussed external to P&C meeting. (All reports Moved: Robyn / Second: Kathy – Reports accepted, and motions carried)

5. Principal’s Report (see attached) • Showed some snippets from the survey.

• iPad classes going ahead (2 year two classes); increase the number of iPads overall in year 2 (1:2 in other class)

• Discussion of single sex year 4 class. Came out of comparisons with student classroom performance and NAPLAN results.

• Connect of coffee in term 4 – interest? On Prep info day – Dec 6; until 9.15. David to organise. Budget $500; Moved – Alex; Seconded – Cathie

• Discussion of music department – P&C funds: o 50 – 60 students; should be max 45 for Strings/Band o Time issues – need to tune instruments, write reports, teaching load o Costs – maintaining instruments, stages, etc. Last funding from P&C was in 2013 and $3k for chairs o Potential options – starting a music sub-committee, applying for grants, asking P&C for funds, fundraisers (like Sherwood Showcase). o Particular issue – stage is large and bulky, difficult to put together/take apart. o Stronger push for music sub-committee (put into the newsletter) o Potential grant from Gaming Committee (look into this) o To do – put together some quotes for maintenance for what they already have (instruments); do up a wish list and prioritise, apply for grants and get

some money, then ask for P&C support.

• Subcommittees – to send through a list of office bearers, those who are frequent attenders, contact details, details of meetings.

Tuckshop

During September tuckshop experienced internet problems which lead to us closing for one day whilst trying to sort out a solution. The problem was that eq was no longer supporting our ageing (but working) laptop and was denying internet access. A loan laptop was provided from the school as an interim solution. A new laptop was considered but in the end the purchase of a portable wifi has enabled us to keep using our current laptop and trial a small tablet as well. Liaising with OSCH we are told by Telstra that once the school is on NBN we will be able to tap into that and no longer require separate data. While the school has IT support, sadly it is not available the days tuckshop is open which puts us in a tricky position should anything go wrong. The amount of time available to process orders in the morning is quite short in order to have all the lunches ready to go by 11.30. The portable wifi is working well and fast and as our data use is minimal so too is the cost. Term 4 we switch menus over to a “lighter” more summery menu and have introduced 3 new salad options. During the tuckshop sub committee meeting held last term an interim chairperson (Vic Daly) was appointed to stand while our current chair (Claire Scott) is on leave touring Australia.

P&C Report 28 October 2019

Swimming Coordinator Review

• Squad classes are filling quickly and some at capacity

• Opportunities to fill learn to swim and we will do another letter box drop of flyers over the next few weeks.

• Saturday learn to swim isn’t at capacity, word of mouth is increasing interest but more exposure is required

• Friday night Swim Club has seen increased numbers Canteen Review

• We have seen an increase to profits across the canteen and bar.

• A change over of Canteen convener to Alisha Kite

• As Saturday sessions increase we will look at having the canteen open for a few hours in this period

• Ordering will be reviewed and opportunities for cost savings have already been identified President Review

• A solid start to the new season with increased members across Swim Training and Club Nights

• Our 2020 Captains were announced on Friday night, o Captains Maddie Preston, Ollie Mahoney o Vice Captains Lexi Winks, Hamish Worwell

• A big thankyou to our female nominees - with only points separating the final results it was a very close competition

• With increased members coming from competitor clubs we have had some complaints about the relaxed training style our coaches follow. This has been addressed with Head Coach and a meeting will take place to address this.

• All outstanding accounts to be finalized within 2 weeks, unpaid accounts will have classes cancelled unless a hardship discussion has been had and payment plan implemented.

• We have introduced a new volunteer roster to ensure that all members are involved and its also not the same people every week on volunteer schedules. This roster has been received extremely well by the members.

• A request was made to Amanda for 3 additional Pool keys as currently we have coaches and myself on days off/late shifts arriving to let others in at 5am. This is unsustainable and an unrealistic expectation.

• We did not finalize the hot water system/showers as previously advised; the final costing came in well above expectations.

• We are in the process of having a formal quote/designs generated to upgrade the changeroom facilities.

P&C OSHC Report – Monday, 28th October 2019 Enrolments – New Enrolment Forms for 2020 were released last Wednesday, 23rd October 2019. These are being received at a steady pace. Enrolment Forms will be distributed to families who have shown their Expression of Interest on Wednesday, 13th November 2019 and then released to the public on Monday, 18th November 2019. Booking Form – I have streamlined the booking form to include all bookings plus the Complying Written Agreement (CWA). This lists details of the child/ren’s bookings and fees in one place. In turn, it doubles as an agreement to confirm bookings and essentially a contract for parents/guardians to pay all fees owing. As both parents/guardians may be obligated to pay these fees, it allows for two signatures to be included on the form. OSHC Volunteer – Our volunteer student applied for a “V” Blue Card before commencing work with us but as he is under 18 and not being employed at the service or placed on a traineeship, he is not eligible to receive one. He may still volunteer his time to work throughout the OSHC program with permission from the Approved Provider. However, he will not require an official blue card to do so. He just needs to sign in and out so we have a record of his hours with us. Aged Debts from Previous Years – Kate has emailed through a list of debts from the past where families have left the service long ago. OSHC is requesting these debts to be written off. Bag Racks – The bag racks are going to be ordered through the school and OSHC will transfer the invoiced amount to cover costs once we have been advised. Printer – The donated printer has arrived at OSHC. There are a couple of cords missing which will directly connect the machine to the computer system. These have been ordered through Officeworks. Carpet Cleaning – Stellar Carpet Cleaning will be performing this task on Wednesday, 30th October 2019. They will dry clean the three carpeted rooms at OSHC. QCAN Member Meeting – OSHC hosted the QCAN Member Meeting on Tuesday, 22nd October 2019. QCAN have requested us to host the “Yarnings with Educational Leaders” Professional Development Session on Tuesday, 5th November from 10:00am – 12:00pm. Future PD Requests – Current OSHC educators have been asked to submit their requests for future PD sessions and we are currently collecting and compiling a list of training they would prefer for 2020. OSHC Annual Meeting – The OSHC Annual Meeting will be held on Wednesday, 20th November 2019 in the OSHC Office for all those interested in attending. A flyer will be distributed in the coming week to notify current families and an advertisement will be placed in the school newsletter. Summer Vacation Care Program – The Program for 2019-2020 has been drafted and attached to this report for tentative approval. Risk Assessments will be sent to the P&C Committee before final authorisation is granted. Leanne Davey OSHC Coordinator Sherwood State School

Principal’s Report – P & C Meeting Monday 28th October

Around the school:

Enrolments: 612 Cash at Bank: $479 402

School Opinion Survey – front page highlights

1:1 iPad classes for 2020

➢ There will be DEFINITELY be 2 x classes in 2020

➢ I will phone some families this week to offer them the option to opt-in via the use of a

school iPad – to ensure equity

➢ Other year 2 classes will have the use of 8 – 12 iPads in their classrooms – to ensure we

do don’t develop a culture of the ‘haves and have nots’ – all 4 x year2 classrooms will work

together to further develop their understanding of this digital technology pedagogy

Discussion and feedback around the possibility of having a single gender class in year 4 Do we do our best for our boys? As educators why is it important to differentiate our practice? My mind has been considering this question for some time as I have been considering how we can better engage some of our boys. ‘For me the key to enhancing the social and academic outcomes of boys, positive teacher student relationships and quality pedagogy, which is informed by key research-based understandings and knowledge about gender.’

I have been pondering the above statement and reflecting on some of our current year 3 data (both qualitative

and quantitative) and I am considering the option of making a single gender (just boys) class in year 4 for 2020.

Feedback has included –

2019 Sherwood State School Courageous, resilient, lifelong learners

➢ This sounds amazing. I think this would benefit my son, he is often left to his own

pondering due to not understanding or feeling overwhelmed by tasks. If this goes ahead,

please sign him up for a more engaging classroom.

➢ We will have a boy going into Grade 4 in 2020. He has average grades however his

teachers do report that he has a limited attention/concentration span, does not always

listen attentively to instructions and frequently requests to go to the bathroom (need to

move rather than requiring an actual bathroom break). He has flourished under his teacher

this year - their teaching and guidance – but I would be interested in trialling him in a

boys only class in 2020 if a more targeted approach will be made to engage boys.

➢ I’m not sure about the idea. I think it sets the boys who get put in that class apart from

the others. I think it has the potential to make those boys feel ‘special’. And what about

the boys not in the class will they be ostracised from the main group? I think a better

solution would be to employ an extra teacher for year 4. Make the classes smaller. Split

the disengaged boys up evenly between all classes. Then all class teachers should be

encouraged strongly to have flexible seating and movement activities throughout the day.

This way all children will benefit not just the boys in the boy’s class. I think flexible seating

and movement is beneficial for all children. So, I do hope this can be implement and

everyone can enjoy this.

➢ Nominally, I am supportive of a change in teaching approach that would enable my son to

be more engaged and enthusiastic about what he is learning. However, I have some

questions or concerns about the approach:

o I would be keen to see some research supporting this approach, as opposed to relying

on what appears to be anecdotal evidence. Has this been done elsewhere, and what

have the outcomes been?

o If we were to opt out of this process, does this mean that boys in the co-ed classes

would then be in the minority? Or would you have a girl’s only class to balance this

out?

o Who would teach the all-boy’s class? Is it someone experienced with single-sex

schooling?

o Would this just be a trial for one year?

o On what basis would the trial be considered a success? What does the school see as

the desired outcomes of this approach? Improved engagement? Improved academic

results? Greater equality between girls and boys?

➢ Whilst we are initially in support of your decision to have an all boy year 4 class in 2020,

we do have some questions we would like to raise. These include:

o Will the boys in this class continue to have classes (i.e. spelling mastery etc) where

they are able to work with and interact in an academic context with their female

peers?

o Would this be a trial year with a view for this to extend beyond next year for this

particular cohort (and/or others) if successful?

o For cohorts that tend to experience more behavioural issues, does this model

lend itself to having shown an improvement in behaviour across the cohort?

o Are there any potential social disadvantages to this model?

o Will parents have the option to select this class for their son for 2020, or will

students be selected by the school due to NAPLAN and teacher/class data?

➢ I understand you were generalising and are already perfectly aware that these generalisations

aren't a one-size-fits-all. In regards to an all boy's classroom, I'm not in favour of it, and

this is why:

o Many academic studies have shown minimal differences, and/or contrary, outcomes

between single-sex and co-educational classrooms (Mael et al. 2005)

o Even when single-sex classrooms are a success, findings suggest that it is the

committed teacher using particular techniques to suit their students that make it

so, and not necessarily the SS classroom (Price 2011)

o Those techniques are also very likely to benefit girls as well, i.e. firm boundaries,

routines, consequences and an activities-based curriculum

o In the past 50 years we have come a long way towards reaching a state of

ungendered education, i.e opportunities to study certain topics and reach certain

academic milestones are no longer dependent on gender. A move to SS classrooms

may send the wrong messaging on this topic.

o Even researchers that support SS schools implicate social and economic factors as the

major causes of educational divisions (Gill 2004). I would also note that Sherwood is

not considered a disadvantaged area.

o Alternatives to a boys only classroom trial:

o Mindfulness-based interventions have demonstrated increased executive functioning,

self-regulation and improved behaviours in primary school children (Janz et all 2019;

Jones 2018;). I am not aware of such a program at Sherwood but I believe this

should at least be trialled before taking the drastic step to trial SS classrooms.

o Outdoor education and environment-based education programs have been shown to

benefit physical fitness, risk assessment, resilience and children's overall physical and

emotional development (Finn 2018), research has also shown that outdoor education

is a feasible option (MacQuarrie 2016).

o As another alternative, I would suggest a father-son and a separate mother-daughter

camp, or overnight sleepover, be trialed, where issues like 'toxic masculinity,'

'resilience' and 'belonging' can be explored and expectation for classroom and

playground behaviours can be established and reinforced by a collective of parents &

teachers. Similar programs are already available in Australia and may be potential

partners or simply inspiration for a local school-based program (please note, I am

not affiliated with any of these programs)

National Outdoor Learning Day - Thursday 7th November

o We will officially unveil our outdoor learning environment

o It will be both a play space and during school time an alternative learning space for

classes to enjoy

o Program flyer has been sent out

o Nicole Johnson and Mark Bailey will attend the opening

o All classes timetabled to access the space on the opening day

o There are still some additions to come

Other examples – shown to me by Helen Jamieson
