Theodore Herzl had a dream and he helped to establish the World Zionist Con-
gress in order to make that dream a reality. The Zionist Organization’s primary
purpose was to establish a Jewish home in Palestine. After Israel became a free
and sovereign state, the World Zionist Organization, an NGO before the term was
even a concept, continued to raise money to support the Jewish homeland. Every
five years, Zionists from around the world have elections to this Congress which
now controls $1 billion dollars annually. There are 500 members of the WZC.
Some are religious, while others are not, and some are from within Israel, others
are not. America has 145 delegates ranging from organization like Hadassah and
B’nai Brith to religious groups – Reform, Conservative and Orthodox.
Mercaz USA is our Conservative Movement North American group. In the last
election, we managed only 25 delegates to the WZC which was down from 36 in
the previous election. The more delegates we can elect, the greater the influence
we can weld within the Congress as we advocate for religious freedom and plural-
ism and the importance of supporting diversity and equality in Israel and Israel/
Diaspora relations. We can do better, but we need your help and support. What
we do now impacts the next five years!
We are now in the midst of election season (voting closes on March 11). We need
you to vote. You can do so in about 10 minutes on a smartphone, tablet or com-
puter by visiting ZionistElection.org and paying a $7.50 fee (for the cost of run-
ning the election). Paper ballots are available in the synagogue office. If you have
a problem with the fee, please come talk to me, don’t let that prevent you from
participating. We can make a difference right now requiring very little effort on
our part. Help promote our values in the Jewish homeland as American Zionists!

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS
Activity at the Religious school has continued to run smoothly even with the principal doubling as our rabbi! In December we learned about and cele-brated Chanukah and then we were off for our Winter Break. Our youngest students attend only twice a month. In December they focused on Chanu-kah and in January the focus was on Shabbat. Our Sunday School stu-dents attend weekly. They do some Hebrew alphabet letter recognition, learn colors and Bible stories, sing songs, and learn blessings and prayers.
Our Hebrew School students have all been working to improve their Hebrew, be it learning the letters or basic vocabulary words. They all work on learning prayers both to prepare for their various class services and just to improve their skills in general. The Vav/Zayin class also works on Torah Trope and preparing Torah read-ings. We do Parshat HaShavuah/the Torah Portion of the Week and we use Shalom Learning to teach not only Bible stories and holidays, but Jewish values as well. Thus far we have covered Teshuvah/Repentance, B’tzelem Elohim/Created in the Divine Image, Gevurah/Strength (think spiritual courage to do what is right), and now Achrayut/Responsibility (how to make a mensch).
Our Hebrew High students have been learning about antisemitism and its place in the larger concept of hate and racism. They learned about the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel – their friendship and their commitment to civil rights and social justice emanating from their shared loved of the Bible.
Our Madrichim have been coming during Hebrew School and helping out in the classrooms. They are a boon to both the teachers and the students. They in turn learn and grow from their experience helping with the younger students.
Each session, our students also come together in prayer, both leading each other and gaining mastery of our most basic and important prayers.

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of sitting with a colleague over coffee the morning after her son became engaged. Every few seconds, her phone buzzed with another new text. “Mazal tov!” “When is the wedding?” Is what we imagine the texts would have said. “Are you thrilled?”
“Are you shocked?” “What does your family think?” Is what her texts actually said “Are they really going to have a wedding? “Will anyone come?”
In 2019, in one of our Northern NJ Jewish communities, the news of a man marrying a man was enough to spark this response. I said little, but watched her body language change with each in-coming message. After twenty minutes I thought she might break, as never-before-seen tears threatened to overflow. By forty minutes she was her stoic self again…but a little more edgy, a little more sharp, and back to wearing an invisible armor I hadn’t known about before.
I have thought about that morning a lot over the past few weeks. On the one hand, I am relieved to be part of a religious community whose leadership doesn’t condone the marginalization of LGBTQ+ people, and whose leadership is, in fact, taking active steps to create a more welcoming, inclusive congregation. On the other hand, it’s also much harder to struggle and grapple with what that might mean, and to own our errors and blunders and ignorance along the way. I know that shifting points of view or opening oneself up to new ideas – or perhaps even being forced to accept that some-thing is the right thing even if you don’t understand or agree with it – is so much more messy. And loud! But we need to talk about it. And for Shomrei Torah, our time is now. Please join the conversation: we want and need to hear your voices.
The LGBTQ+ Committee is fortunate to be receiving guidance from a national organization called Keshet, whose mission is to work “for the full equality of all LGBTQ Jews and our families in Jewish life.” In consultation with Keshet, we conducted a self-assessment and identified areas in which our synagogue could improve. To date, the Committee has reviewed and proposed updates to Shomrei Torah’s By-Laws, Harassment Policy, Membership Application, and Religious School registration form. The Committee also sponsored a training for staff, board, and our committee members on LGBTQ+ inclusion.
In its next phase, the Committee hopes to have another workshop and an awareness Shabbat, where our conversations can go deeper. We plan to introduce new signage in the building, and update the website to better reflect our values regarding LGBTQ+ youth, couples, and families. In the Committee’s next article, we will talk about the specific importance of signs and language and images.
This is new territory for many of us. I don’t really know yet what it means to be an ally here at
Shomrei Torah. Mostly what I know is how terrible it feels to sit with someone’s pain in moments
that are meant to be joyous. I don’t want to be banging into armor when the hearts underneath
want acceptance and love. And I most certainly don’t want to create barriers or perpetuate stereo-
types in space that is meant to be sacred. If you want to talk more, or learn more, or join us on this
journey, please reach out to me, LGBTQ+ Committee chair, or to committee members Henry
Ramer, Norman Klein, Bob Molnar, Elaine Schlossberg, Michelle Esgar, Harold Willner, Shayna
Blecherman, or the Rabbi.
We welcome you.
Jessica Fleischer, LGBTQ+ Committee Chair

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
ANDY SIMON
Many members of our congregation know Andy Simon because well, Andy has been around, like forever. He was the kid that was digging in the mud when storms turned the construction site for our future synagogue into the best mud pies ever. He was also the kid who played softball on the site of what would become our current sanctu-ary. He remembers when the shed was our shul and that his father would come with a chain to pull cars out of the lot when they were stuck in the mud after services. He remembers services being held around town in various locations before that and attending Hebrew school at the Schuyler-Colfax Middle School before our building was in existence.
His parents, Barbara & Len Simon, were among the original members of Shomrei Torah and along with his brother and sister, Andy was born and raised in Wayne. And even before there was a Shomrei Torah, his family was here. His grandparents and their siblings had opened the West Diner (currently Six Brothers Diner) and began a long career in restaurants andcatering. His father, Len, was also a member of the first graduating class of Wayne Valley High School. He and Andy even had the same guidance counselor!
The synagogue and its members all had a momentous impact on his life. David Schlossberg, son of Elaine & Sy Schlossberg, and fellow Hebrew School alumni, introduced Andy to his future wife Nancy on a blind double date. They were married on March 7, 1998 by Rabbi Mark. Andy and Nancy lived in West Orange for two years before returning to Wayne to begin raising a family: Jack (15), Matthew (13) & Megan(11). His parents, and sister Cindy Simon & brother-in-law, Mark Frankel, along with cousins Robyn & Scott, all belong to Shomrei, keeping the family close and connected. Andy attended Rutgers University graduating with dual degrees in Computer Science & Hebraic Studies. He has been a Trustee for the Northern NJ Region of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs since 2012. In addition he has held many different positions at Shomrei Torah:
Men's Club President 2011-2014 Trustee 2014-present Men's Club Treasurer 2014-2015 Webmaster 2008-present Education/Ritual/Youth V.P. 2008-2010 Communications Secretary 2010-2014 High Holiday Usher since he was old enough
As Andy states “His goal is to help keep Shomrei Torah up and running any way he can contribute.” But there are a few things that people might not know about Andy such as:
Andy, Nancy & kids are huge Disney fans and have gone to Disney World over a dozen times.
He received the USCJ Young Leadership Award in 2009.
He was the Men’s Club Man of the Year in 2010
He was a stay-at-home dad from when their youngest child Megan was born until she was in 3rd
grade, affording him the opportunity to do what he loves best….VOLUNTEER!

Please join Rabbi Mark and the Shomrei Torah contingent for the AIPAC Policy Conference in
Washington D C Sunday, March 1, 2020 to Tuesday, March 3. Participate with the approxi-
mately 18,000 pro-Israel activists in discussions, information sessions and rallies. Hear from
top officials in the United States and Israel governments, in the largest gathering of its kind
of Israeli supporters in the U.S. No experience or prior AIPAC involvement required. Let’s see
if we can get a sizable Shomrei Torah contingent to attend. For more information, please con-
tact the office.
BAR MITZVAH OF MATTHEW SIMON February 15 2020 / 15 Shevat 5780
Parashat Yitro My name is Matthew Simon. I will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on February 15, 2020. I am a 7
th grader at Golda Och Academy. Math is my
favorite subject at school. I enjoy strategy and card games, which I play with my friends. During the summer, I attend sleep away camp and visit Disney World before starting school. My parsha is Yitro. Yitro (or Jethro in English) is Moses’ father-in-law. Yitro brings Moses’ wife and sons to him and praises G-d as the greatest. The next day he tells Moses that he shouldn’t be the only one solving disputes, so that he doesn’t tire himself solving all the Israelites’ problems and instead shares the burden. Then G-d gives Moses the ten command-ments to pass on to the Israelites.
I would like to thank the community of Shomrei Torah for supporting me and my family throughout my years. Special thanks to Stuart Skolnick for his support and patience as a tutor. Special thanks to Rabbi Mark and my parents for all their help. I hope you will join me and my family for Shabbat services Friday evening February 14th and Saturday morning February 15th as we
celebrate my becoming a Bar Mitzvah.

THANKSGIVING COOKIES, TURKEYS AND THE COOKIE JAR
Many thanks to all those who provided cookies for the WIN Thanksgiving Baskets. A whop-ping 105 boxes/bags of cookies were brought by Shomrei Torah congregants, including those purchased with money deposited in The Cookie Jar. Also, a total of 6 turkeys and 1 turkey breast were dropped off for this worthy project. This was also a great response. Thanks to those who gave checks directly for WIN. Yasher Koach to Mike Greenblatt who helped shlep turkeys and cookies to the car on the very rainy and raw day designated for pick-up, and to Diane Seltzer who delivered a very large assembled Thanksgiving Basket to a client who was unable to pick it up. Nearly 70 families received WIN Baskets this year. WIN currently serves approximately 135 families on an ongoing basis.
We are encouraged by the ongoing enthusiasm of our congregation for this project!

Shomrei Torah's Men's Club held two events in December.
On Sunday December 8, Zev Friede and Felicia Shechtman were our honorees at the annual Man and Youth of the Year Gala at Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael in Springfield. Shomrei Torah had the largest turnout at the event, with 43 attendees. Sixteen ads for Zev and Felicia appeared in the on-line Gala Tribute Journal. Electronic copies of the ads were given to Shomrei Torah, and are avail-able for anyone to download or view. The event was an outstanding success for Shomrei Torah, and its honorees. Yasher Koach to Zev and Felicia on their well-deserved honors. And thanks go to Phil Nuccetelli for chairing this event
About one week later, on Tuesday December 17th, we held our annual winter blood drive. In the middle of an icy winter day, 25 donors came to the synagogue and provided badly needed blood supplies. Michael Greenblatt has chaired this program for years. Thank you Mike for your longstand-ing dedication.
As the Men's Club closed out another secular New Year (trick question - how many New Years do we celebrate, including the January 1st Sylvester date?), its membership crested the century mark for the first time in synagogue history. As of 12/31/2019, the Club had 101 members. We want to thank David Spiegelglas for providing the membership list from ShulCloud. Membership dues are the single biggest source of income to the Club. Over the past eight years, Men's Club has been able to give the shul $31,000 from its Treasury. This year, the club has budgeted another $7000 to fund the purchase of a new sukkah for the synagogue. Without members, none of this support is possible. Thank you for being a member - and if you are reading this, but are not yet a member, it is never too late to join.
Speaking of fundraising, the annual Super Bowl box pool was sold out by mid January. By the time you get this L'Chaim, the next Super Bowl will be history. On that date (Sunday February 2nd), the Men's Club will sponsor the World Wide Wrap. Come to shul that day and be counted in morning minyan. With many of our snowbirds in Florida right now, Sunday morning minyans need our support. Later that evening, we always figure out who the Super Bowl pool winners are. Last year, one lucky congregant took home $550, with just a $20 bet on one box.
We hope to see you in shul - at the Wrap, at Men's Club Shabbat, at the Purim Carnival - or when-ever you happen to drop by.
- Eric, Mike and the Gang

SHOMREI TORAH SISTERHOOD
Before we know it, Purim will be here. This year it arrives on March 10th. Join our Annual Purim Box Fundraiser and fulfill the mitzvah of providing Mishloach Manot to each Shomrei Torah family in Wayne. This year we will deliver Purim boxes on Sunday, March 8th to Wayne congregants. Out of town members may pick theirs up at the synagogue that day or make other arrangements. All we need now is YOU!
Here's how it works: For just $3.00 per recipient, you can participate in the sending of a beautiful gift basket to anyone on our list -- all Shomrei Torah members and staff. Every family who gets checked will get one gift basket, plus a card saying who sent it. For example, if five families send you a basket, you'll get one lovely basket with a card listing those five families.
If you wish to send to EVERYONE on the Shomrei Torah list, it is only $136 and your name will be included on everyone’s card.
If you wish to purchase additional Purim Baskets to send out on your own to relatives and friends – (that is, to people not on our Shomrei Torah list) the cost will be $18 per additional basket and we will be happy to deliver to those who live in Wayne.
We hope that participation in this mitzvah and Sisterhood’s largest FUNDRAISER will be over-whelmingly positive. Purim Basket Orders and Payment are due in the synagogue office no later than FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21. Please send back the order form and help make this PURIM FUNDRAISER most successful.
Mishloach Manot is a team effort. Come down to the synagogue Monday, March 2nd at 7pm for bagging and Thursday, March 5th at 7pm for assembly. Most important and the most fun is delivering the baskets. We need Volunteers for Sunday, March 8th starting at 9 am for deliv-ery – costumes optional! Hope you can join us.
Judy Krantz is chairing this huge undertaking once again and can be reached at 201.679.4681 or [email protected] to answer any questions. Thank you Judy!
Please keep in mind that Passover is only 40 days after Purim, so now is the time to purchase Scrip. The price of each gift card is its face value and there are NO extra charges. Our most popular venues include: Seasons, Kosher Nosh, Shoprite, Fairway, Stop and Shop, Panera, Dunkin’ Donuts, Starbucks and many others. Purchasing Scrip makes it so easy to shop and support Shomrei Torah at the same time! Contact Marcy Marcus, 201.396.6660, Phyllis Staloff, 973.495.0865, Roby Weiner, 973.595.5393 OR the Synagogue office.
Finally, when you stop by the synagogue, be sure to check out our new Gift Shop display in the library. Lee Ann Beck, our wonderful shopkeeper, is usually available on Sunday mornings to take orders or to guide you in purchasing that perfect gift. Lots of new items are coming in for the upcoming holiday.

A GREAT MOMENT FOR RABBI MARK; A GREAT MOMENT FOR SHOMREI TORAH
On Sunday, January 26th, Rabbi Mark received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from the Jew-
ish Theological Seminary in New York City. The ceremony celebrated his achievements as a mem-
ber of the rabbinate for over twenty-five years. Rabbi Mark has been at Shomrei Torah for that 25-
year period and later this spring (Sunday, April 26) he will be the honoree at the synagogue’s annual
gala. For the Rabbi and his entire family, these events represent a remarkable achievement. It is a
great moment for Rabbi Mark, a great moment for Shomrei Torah.
Over the years Shomrei Torah has benefitted from the continuity and stability provided by his day to
day presence and wise counsel. One of the many advantages of his longevity here is that he knows
our local families and traditions and has officiated at bnai mitzvah of children born of marriages
which he performed. He is in the synagogue early and late for daily minyan, committee meetings,
teaching and helping in the office. He knows how we did it last year, and 15 years ago. He knows if
there is money for a new program in the budget. He knows if our by-laws would permit the proposed
actions. He knows, because he’s been here and seen it all before and provides our institutional mem-
ory.
In partnership with Shomrei Torah’s lay leadership, he has worked constructively to build the
synagogue. Just imagine the time and effort which would have been wasted if we were repeatedly
hiring and training new officiants over these past 25 years. Imagine the turmoil and spent emotion
that would accompany such changes! Our lay leaders and he both deserve credit for making the
partnership work.
All this is combined with knowledge of Jewish history, customs and religious practice, but that
aspect of his tenure here will be addressed at a later time, closer to the April gala. For now, let’s
just appreciate the benefits of our many years together.
Henry Ramer
Shomrei Torah, Vice President
