    Takamatsu () serves as a convenient starting point for exploringShikoku Island. Within easy access, it abounds in tourist attractions such asRitsurin Garden, Yashima Plateau and Kotohiragu Shrine.Ritsurin Garden () is admired as one of the masterpieces of

    Japanese landscape gardening. Covering 75 ha. of land, it is skillfully laid outto harmonize with the surrounding pine-covered hills. Visitors can enjoy avariety of scenery throughout the four seasons. The garden is 15 min. bybus from Takamatsu Sta. (230). Open: 7:00-17:00 (Dec. & Jan.), 7:00-17:30

Commanding a spectacular view of the InlandSea, it is 20 min. by Kotoden Railway Shido Line from Takamatsu Pier(310).Shikokumura () or Shikoku Village is an open-air museum of oldresidential houses in Shikoku.     OUTSIDE TAKAMATSU

    Kotohiragu Shrine () is one of the most revered Shintoshrines in the country. The main shrine stands halfway up Mt. Zozusan (). The approach to the shrine is a long flight of granite steps 785 inall. There is also a lighthousemuseum.Side trips from Takamatsu to two great museums.Benesse Art Site Naoshima (), is a collec-tive term for Benesse Corporations contemporary art activities inNaoshima island, 50 min. from Takamatsu port (510 yen) or 20 min. by ferry

    from Uno port (280 yen). Benesse House (): a museumdesigned by Tadao Ando, an international famous architect, with accommo-dation facilities. Site specific works are permanently exhibited.     Kochi (), a former castle town beyond the Shikoku Mountain Range, isaccessible by JR limited express train in 2 hrs. 20 min. from Takamatsu(4,760) or by JR express bus in 2 hrs. 30 min. from Matsuyama (3,500).The city is known for its processed marine products including katsuobushi(dried bonito used for seasoning).Kochi Castle (), 20-min. walk from JR Kochi Sta., is noted for itsdonjon designated as an Important Cultural Property. It was reconstructed in1753. The site now forms Kochi Park. Open daily 9:00 - 17:00 (no entranceafter 16:30) except Dec. 26 to 31. Admission: 400.Katsurahama (), 40 min. by bus from JR Kochi Sta. (610), is a scenic

    beach with 5 colors sand and green pines fringed with fantastically shapedrocks and reefs. It is particularly celebrated for moon-viewing in autumn.Ryugado Stalactite Cave (), 30 min. by JR Dosan Line and 20 min.by bus from Kochi Sta., is a limestone grotto, meandering inland for 4 km(2.5 mi.). The limestone formations make for fine geological specimens. Anumber of dishes, presumably used by the prehistoric residents, have alsobeen unearthed in the cave.     Matsuyama (), pop. 515,002 (as of Sep. 2008), is the capital of EhimePrefecture in Shikoku Island. The city and its surroundings are blessed withhistorical attractions and natural beauty.Matsuyama Castle () is located on a 132 m-high hill. Ropeway andlift are available for going up to the top. From the donjon, one can get apanoramic view of Matsuyama City. The castle was completed in 1627, andit is one of the few castles in Japan that has been preserved in its originalcondition. Admission: 500.Dogo Spa () is accessible in 15 min. by streetcar from MatsuyamaCity. It is considered to be the oldest spa in Japan. The public bath is a 3-sto-ried wooden structure built in 1894. The fees for taking a bath vary from400 to 1,500 for adults, depending on the services requested. There isalso a special bath for the Imperial Family called Yushinden (). It isnot in use now, but it is preserved as an Important Cultural Property. Thetour costs 250 for adults.Ishite Temple () One of the 88 temples in Shikoku of the ShingonSect. Famous for Ohenrosan, or pilgrims in white costumes traveling onfoot to visit the 88 temples. Some buildings in the precincts are designatedas Important Cultural Properties.

    Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum (), 12 min. bybus from JR Matsuyama Sta., named from Ryotaro Shiba's novel written ofmodernization of Japan, was built as a forum of the city. The main charactersin the novel are from Matsuyama. The unique triangle museum building wasdesigned by worldfamous architect Tadao Ando. Open: 9:40 18:30 (Enterbefore 18:00.) Closed: 2nd. 5th Mon. (open when Mon. falls on a nationalholiday and closed the following day), Tue. follows 1st Mon., Dec. 29 31.Admission: 400.Iyo Kasuri Kaikan (), 20 min. by bus from JR MatsuyamaSta. is the craft center which showcases the local traditional textile, IyoKasuri.     Matsuyama Eki Mae

    Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park (), 109 sq. km (42sq. mi.) in area, extends over the southwestern coast of Kochi and EhimePrefectures. The park is featured by scenic Lias-type coastlines and subma-rine seascapes. Highlights are Cape Ashizuri, Tatsukushi and Minokoshi.Cape Ashizuri (), 1 hr. 45 min. by bus from JR Nakamura Sta.(1,930), is located at the southern extremity of Shikoku. It abounds in vari-ous subtropical plants. An esplanade and a pathway are laid out.Tatsukushi Beach (), 1 hr. by bus from Cape Ashizuri (1,380),

    is famous for its fantastic rocks formed by sea and wind erosion. On thebeach are Ashizuri Aquarium, Coral Museum and the UnderseaObservatory.Minokoshi Beach (), literally leaving unseen a reef-boundseacoast similar to Tatsukushi is so named because, in the old days, sight-seers denied themselves a visit to this area since the route was extremelytrying despite its rare and beautiful scenery. Today, the coast is accessible in30 min. by a glass-bottomed boat from Tatsukushi (1,260 round-trip).

    Jidosha Bus from Matsuyama-shi-eki Bus Terminal, used to be a castle towngoverned by the famous Date family as its lord from the 17th through the19th centuries. Most tourist attractions are related to this Date family, suchas Uwajima Castle (), Municipal Date Museum ()and Tenshaen Garden (). The city is famous for its bull fight, wheretwo giant bulls (about 1t) fight each other (Jan. 2, 1st Sun. in Apr., Jul. 24,Aug.14 and 4th Sun. in Oct.). Local festivals are featured by giant bull mon-ster floats (5 - 6m). The festivals are held on Jul. 22, 23 & 24.

    Shimanami Kaido (), is a 60kilometer route which allowsone to travel from Onomichicity, Hiroshima, to Imabaricity, Ehime via aseries of bridges connecting smaller islands. For those interested in cycling,there is a bicycle path along the whole route.
