Today, companies must find new ways to increaseproduction efficiency ... reduce operating costs ...accelerate delivery times ... and meet strictgovernment regulations.

Maximizing your operations is no longer the goal; in these times, you must optimise your businessenterprise.

The Fieldbus Foundation’s technology is not just asolution to the challenges facing industry. Rather, it is a means to the solution — an enabling technologyproviding automation end users with the “Freedom to Choose” and the “Power to Integrate.”

FOUNDATION fieldbus™ Technology with a Business Purpose

“End users should not forget thereal objective of implementingfieldbus: reliable operations andimproved profitability. At Shell, the technology improved assetutilisation, lowered fixed andvariable costs, and reducedmaintenance expenses.”James RhameAsset Development ManagerShell Chemical

“Our move towards adoptingFOUNDATION fieldbus was a naturalconsequence of improved processstability, better knowledge of assetstatus, and decreased downtimeprovided by this technology.Interoperability, and the means toimplement control at the fieldlevel, were also key factors duringour evaluation phase.”Carlos Henrique Wildhagen MouraTechnical ConsultantPetrobras

An Industry Standard —Implemented WorldwideAs the leading not-for-profit trade organisation dedicatedto fieldbus, the Fieldbus Foundation™ represents over350 companies worldwide. Members include almostall major suppliers of control systems and instrumen-tation, as well as many of the largest end users ofplant automation equipment.

Since its introduction in 1994, the FieldbusFoundation’s open, non-proprietary technology,FOUNDATION fieldbus™, has gained unprecedentedindustry support. More than 10,000 fieldbus controlsystems, and hundreds of thousands of fieldbusdevices, are now in service around the world.

FOUNDATION fieldbus is recognised as the de-factoindustry standard for process automation. It is fullycompliant with all recognised international fieldbusstandards, including ISA S50, IEC 61158 andCENELEC EN50170.

The Only Complete, InteroperableFieldbus SolutionFOUNDATION fieldbus is a powerful, all-digital, two-waycommunications system interconnecting field equip-ment on a single process control network. Thetechnology offers a complete, open fieldbus solution:H1 fieldbus for continuous control; and COTS-basedHigh Speed Ethernet (HSE) for advanced processcontrol, hybrid or semi-continuous control, anddiscrete automation.

FOUNDATION fieldbus makes it possible to “mine”important information from the plant floor. When used correctly, this information empowers operatorsand makes plant operation easier.

Only FOUNDATION fieldbus enables true distributedcontrol, as well as device and subsystem interoper-ability — without the need for custom programming.

Power to Integrate Your PlantEnterpriseFOUNDATION fieldbus provides end users with the powerto integrate their plant enterprise — and the freedomto choose how to integrate.

The H1/HSE fieldbus architecture not only integrateslegacy systems and other bus protocols, but alsounifies devices, hosts, control subsystems, dataservers and large data generators across the enterprise.

FOUNDATION fieldbus provides robust digital control basedon a tightly integrated system architecture and ahigh-speed backbone for plant operations. This, inturn, removes the constraints on interoperability forfield instruments, controllers and subsystems.

Fieldbus technology unifies today’s smart instrumenta-tion and analytical highway to provide all-digitalaccess to operational parameters and data at thepoint of measurement.

Improved Business Results – Wherever You Operate

From the petrochemical refineries of the MiddleEast, to Oil & Gas Operations in Nigeria,FOUNDATION fieldbus is improving the businessresults of industrial end users throughout Europe– and around the world.

Greater Efficiency with EDDLThe Electronic Device Description Language(EDDL) is a text-based language for describing thedigital communication characteristics of intelligentdevices and equipment parameters in an Operat-ing System (OS) and Human Machine Interface(HMI)- neutral environment. EDDL enables a hostsystem manufacturer to create a single engineer-ing environment that eliminates the need forcustom software drivers for each device type.

The Fieldbus Foundation recently signed anaddendum to its agreement with HART Commu-nication Foundation, PROFIBUS User Organisationand OPC Foundation to further develop EDDL.The Fieldbus Foundation President and CEORichard Timoney believes the cooperation project will protect industry investments in EDDL by enabling additional enhancements to the IEC 61804 standard.

With EDDL, device developers do not need to dealwith the burden of designing and programming agraphic user interface to run under a variety ofplatforms and environments, from large HMIs to

small handhelds. Instead, they can utilise commongraphic display capabilities provided bycommands in the EDDL.

“As well as the advantages regardinginstallation costs, fieldbus technologyalso offers considerable added value,e. g. with diagnostics and device para-meterisation. Furthermore the savingspotential in maintenance costs shouldnot be forgotten.”Michael Schwibach, BASF AGSpeaker of the Working Group 2.6 “Fieldbusses”NAMUR User Association of Process Control Technologyin Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industries

Faster Start-ups and LowerCostsFOUNDATION fieldbus takes advantage of today’sintelligent instrumentation to provide reliable, deterministic control. Plus, it reduces wiringrequirements, reduces engineering and commis-sioning time and costs. Furthermore it lowersinstallation and equipments costs – your criticalcapital expenditures.

Unlike traditional control technology, FOUNDATION

fieldbus delivers system self-diagnosticssupporting proactive device maintenance. Fieldbusdiagnostics are also the key to implementingadvanced asset management solutions. Theresult: lower operating expenditures and improvedprofitability.

FOUNDATION fieldbus, combined with asset manage-ment software, eliminates the high cost ofpreventive and unnecessary maintenance such asperiodic valve rebuilds. Resources are spent onequipment requiring repair or service – notwasted on devices that don’t need it. Maintenancetime is also reduced.

The Benefits of High SpeedEthernetThe Fieldbus Foundation answered the market‘sdemand for an open, integrated control architec-ture with its High Speed Ethernet (HSE)technology. Running at 100 MBit/s, HSE combineswith the Foundation‘s existing H1 (31.25 KBit/s)fieldbus protocol to provide a complete, comple-mentary fieldbus solution: H1 for continuouscontrol, and HSE for high-performance controlapplications and plant information integration.

HSE is an international standard (IEC 61158)providing tight integration and a free exchange ofinformation across the plant enterprise. The HSEsolution is superior to proprietary, Ethernet-basedtechnologies since it provides end users with fullaccess to data, high reliability, low costs and easeof use. It supports the entire range of fieldbuscapabilities, including standard function blocksand Device Descriptions (DDs), as well as newapplication-specific Flexible Function Blocks(FFBs) for advanced process and applications.

The Fieldbus Foundation’s H1 + HSE architecturehas defined a plant environment that movesbeyond yesterday’s outdated, proprietary controlplatforms. It is field proven to integrate acrossmultiple vendor offerings – delivering a best-in-class, fully interoperable plant automationsolution.

“We expect the same functionalities aswith conventional technology, with higherexpectations in respect to commis-sioning, validation and maintenance.Proven solutions are now installed atNovartis.”Dr. Joachim ZobelSenior Automation EngineerNovartis Pharma

How End Users Are Benefiting from Fieldbus

Carbowil Spolka, PolandCarbowil Spolka has chosen Fieldbus Non-Incentive Concept (FNICO) power supplies andwiring components for a new fieldbus instrumen-tation project at the company's carbon dioxideproduction plant in Wloclawek. Part of the plant isclassified as a Zone 2 hazardous area, and tomaintain a uniform approach across the entireinstallation, an explosion protection method suit-able for Zone 2 was required. The chosen solutionwith FOUNDATION fieldbus achieved all requirementsperfectly.

Tatneft-NK-Oil, RussiaThe plant in Nizhnekamsk is the first petrochem-ical plant in Russia that produces synthetic motoroil. It was constructed during 2002-2003 andstarted up in September 2003. The FOUNDATION

fieldbus technology provides an open, decen-tralised digital control architecture with intrinsicsafety that delivers rich diagnostic informationabout equipment health and status.

Shell, NigeriaFieldbus Intrinsically Safe Concept (FISCO) powersupplies have been chosen for the Bonny IslandTerminal Project, a new development of 24 oilstorage tanks for Shell Petroleum DevelopmentCorporation in Nigeria. The control systemincludes a 6000 device FOUNDATION fieldbusnetwork. 1600 of the devices are located inhazardous areas.

Shin-Etsu, NetherlandsShin-Etsu is the largest PVC manufacturer in theworld. The Vinyl Chloride Monomer is piped fromthe manufacturing plant at Rotterdam to the plantat Pernis where PVC is produced. The initial instal-lation consists of 35 fieldbus segments in a Zone2 hazardous area, using “control in the field”.Thanks to the use of FOUNDATION fieldbus tech-nology it has been possible to eliminate wiring

and termination failures, which had been identi-fied as the main cause of maintenance problems.

Degussa, GermanyDegussa Herne upgraded the continuousproduction plant with FOUNDATION fieldbus. Theinvestment is comparable to conventionalsolutions but offers the operator a lot of additionalbenefits like reduced process downtime andextended asset management.

LUKOIL, RussiaLUKOIL modernised its refinery in 2002 byinstalling FOUNDATION fieldbus. The plant produces12 million tons petroleum per year. The refineryhas installed fieldbus at lube oil blending facility,at water treatment plant and at hydrogen rectifi-cation plant with over 3000 devices. The use offieldus enabled LUKOIL to lower its maintenancecosts and manage assets in response to marketdemand.
