    There is a new housing

system too. All formclasses are in either the

    Sharks, Emerald Eagles

    or Ruby Rattlesnakes.

    The pupils have assem-

    blies in these houses,

    they race for them in

    sports day (back) and

    competitions also take

    place.

been tried and testedaround the country and the

    responses to them have

    been mixed. In some

    schools, vertical tutoring

    has worked really well

    because both teachers and

    pupils have been working

as a team to make the

    new system a success.

Mr Kipling says VerticalTutors are a wonderful

    new innovation at DSMS

    and they have made the

    relationships between the

    school and parents even

    better.

When DSMS pupils re-turned in September the

    school had brought in the

    much anticipated vertical

    tutors system.

This means that 2 or 3 pu-

    pils from every year are

put in the same tutor group

    together.

    They spend 20 minutes a

day together after firstlesson with 2 tutors to guide

    them, however the year

11s are taking on the role

    of leading the tutor groups.

    fundraising for a number of

    charities, one of them being

    the 10 for 10 campaign

    who have previously served

A fan of the American TV Sitcom 'Friends' has opened the iconic 'Central Perk'Cafe in Beijing in China. The man who opened the Cafe unfortunately isn't called

Gunther however he is called Du Xin and he is a 'Friends' super fan. After watch-

ing the show, he started searching around Beijing for a place where he could

actually sit on an orange couch just like the one his favourite heroes relaxed on in

    the sitcom. When he couldn't

find one in Beijing, he decided

to open his own Central Perk.

In order to nail all the things

    he wanted, Du studied thou-

sands of photos of the shows

set and watched endless re-runs. Five months later and he

had the Cafe of his dreams.

    Central Perk opens in Beijing

    Kickstarting websites are

    websites that start-up com-

    panies can use to raise

    money for their product.

It is like an online version of

    'Dragons Den'. You pitch

    your product, maybe up-

    load a prototype photo,

state how much you want to raise

and the time you want to raise it in.

Then, if people like your idea, they

can donate as much as they like in

return for a free model or some-

thing like that (whatever you think if

    right).

One of the most successful ideas

    that came from kickstarter.com was

the Pebble Watch which you can

connect to your iPhone or Android

    phone via Bluetooth 4.0.

    It sends notifications, text messages

    and other useful information from

your smartphone to the watch. It can

also be used to send information

back to your phone (like if you want

to change the track or if you want

to use your phones GPS for a track-

ing app on the smart watch).

The Pebble Watch has an e-paper screen and the battery

life that can last around 7

    days. Unfortunately, the watch

    does not currently work with

    Blackberry or Windows Phone

    however hopefully that will be

    coming soon.

The Pebble Watch is going to

    cost around 100.

    What makes the pebble watch

so special is that it made

    $1,000,000 in 28 hours when

it's goal was only $100,000. By

the end of the 5 week deadline

it had 68,929 backers and had

    raised $10,266,846 in the end.

    When I becomethe Minister

of TransportOver the last 200 years almost all of

the houses in the UK have been

knocked down and then rebuilt so how

long will it take until we need to start

    replacing and updating every single

    road?

Instead of re-tarmacking them I think

the Government should put down elec-

tronic rails and replace cars with high-

    tech pods.

This sounds unrealistic however the only

thing holding this possibility back is the

    price it will cost.

The pods on the rail will work like a

    large digital Scalextric where you

simply program where you want to go

and it gets you there as fast as possi-

ble taking traffic into consideration. The main difference between this and

a Scalextric is that you wont go flying

from the road every time you go

    round corners.

The pods will be programmed not to

collide into each other and they will

have sensors on the front so they cant

run pedestrians over, instead they will

just slow to a stop if someone stands in

    front of them.

You will probably still need to wear a

seatbelt still however you wont need a

driver. Everyone in the pod will be

able to plug in their iPod and listen to

music or play games or do work.

Of course, depending on how many

passengers you want there will be

different sized pods so you wont get

a 2-man pod if you are travelling in a

    group of 8.

Just to clarify, there is a 0% chance of

me ever being the Transport Minister

but I think this idea should be consid-ered as a new, long-term transport

    system.

Where are they now: Alec Llewellyn

My book of the month would be The

    Mystery Of the Hidden House.

It was a fantastic read and was really

entertaining and had a very good

mystery to it.It was all about a group of children

who were told to not go mystery hunt-

ing these holidays as they did the

previous times in the other books. But

of course they somehow found them-

selves right in the middle of something

very 'peculiar' as they described it.

The mystery was that cars were being

stolen and stored in a big warehouse

lost in the middle of the countryside.

One of the children got kidnapped bythe gang who were worried they

knew too much about what they were

Book of the Monthdoing. So the

    other children

    set out to try

    and rescue their

    friend solvingthe mystery on

    the way. The

    local policeman

who knew nothing of the mystery

was very angry to find it solved by

'those pests' as he calls them. It was

a brilliant book by my favorite

author Enid Blyton who is a brilliant

author of lots of other books to. I

    recommend this book to anyone

who is a fan of mystery and ad-

    venture!

    By Poppy Hutchinson

Brain Teasers No:1Can you think of a Solution?

You are out playing with your group

of friends and suddenly you come

across a river which is about 2 metres

wide. There is no bridge in sight so

your friends start to wade across it

for there is no current and it is quite

slow-flowing. You are left on the oth-

er side but when you are about to

follow your friends actions, the river

starts flowing very fast and it is im-

possible to get across without drown-

ing. Trees line the river and your

friend has a long length of rope. Can

you think of a way of getting acrossthe fast flowing river bearing in mind

    there is no bridge?

many friends I still have from

my school days, and how when

you meet some of them after

    several years absence, they

    always so

    Can you remem-

    ber when..

I have now worked for North-

    umbrian Water for 16 years

    after going to University and

    working away from Darlington

    for several years; working my

    way up through various opera-

    tional and management posi-

tions. I am very lucky in having

a job that allows me to use thebedrock of skills I learnt whilst

    at Branksome, and add other

skills I have picked up through

    the years.

You may not enjoy all of your

    time at school, however the

    memories and experiences you

    have will keep friendships

alive, and allow lots of laugh-

    ing reminisces many years af-

    ter you have left .

with 10 O-levels, as well as being

    Head-Boy and captain of the

school Rugby team. I think it was

    the friendship through playing

    sports that I remember mostand

that along with some of the teach-

ers who taught me along the way,

    helped contribute to the values

that have steered me through my

    lifeincluding team working, ef-

    fective leadership, loyalty and

    commitment. Its amazing how

Helloand although it is over 30

years since I left Branksome, 1982

in fact, the time seems to have

flown by and some of the experi-

ences and memories of my time

there seem as if they happened just

    yesterday.

    Schooling was very different then

I remember we were the first year

to do Computer Studies O level

( whats O levels you ask ?) and we

had to go to the Technical College

    and write simple programmes on

blue-cards as the school only had 1

    computerlook in your history

books about card and tape read-

    ers, BASIC computer languages,

floppy disks and all that stuff!

We seemed to spend lots of time in

    cold draughty classroomsespe-

cially the top floor of the new

    block - and especially double

French on a wintery Tuesday after-

noonwhy did this seem to last for

    hours and hours ?

However, I must have listened to

some lessons, as I left Branksome

    the memories

    and experiences

    you have will keep

    friendships alive

    Most Addictive App Games

Fifa 13 is a very realistic football gamewhich is probably the biggest sellinggame every year. Fifa has been aroundfor many years and a new version of thegame comes out every year where millionsof copies get sold worldwide. It has alllicensed teams from around the world andyour favourite players are likely to bethere too.

The game has two very different gamemodes and different activities for you todo such as Skill Games and Manager

Mode. When this game comes out it is

around 45 (it depends on what gamesconsole you have). So its a fair bit of

money but the game is well worth theprice!

    Fifa 13 Review

Smartphones have become a large part of people lives whether it be for a good or bad reason. Wheth-

er its keeping in touch with everyone, anywhere or passing time on a journey. But near enough everyone

can admit to an unhealthy obsession to something or another at some point in their lives and many of

them will simply be a Smartphone app. So heres a rundown of the five most addictive apps.

    By Ben Maclean

    5Jump, jump, jump.

    No doubt every-

    one has heard of

    doodle jump from

    friends or relatives and

    heard good things about

this game and rightly so. Its

simplicity in both controls and game play make

this game creditable in every way.

4The name cut the rope is very

self explanatory, a piece of can-

dy is extended on a piece of

rope which a little animal wants

to eat. The only way to get it there is to cut

the ropes. This game has hundreds of levels

with each set having its own twist. These

twists make this game instantly re-

    playable.

    3Temple

    run is arelatively

    new game

    which took the app

    store and android

    store by storm. It

has a slight Indiana Jones influence, youve

stolen a golden idol and the protectors are

not happy and chase you till they catch

you. Your aim as the thief is to run away

whilst collecting more loot to boost your

score. Though it sounds complicated this

game does not let you simply put it downand walk away.

    2The secondmost addic-tive app is

    the mine craft pocket edition.

    Though there are many elements

from the pc version which have

been missed out in the pocket

edition, the core elements of the

game are still strong enough to

make this game addictive nomatter where you take it.

    1Top of

    the treeof ad-

    dictive

    apps is Angry

    birds. Angry birds

    is the ultimate

game for Smartphones. It was the first

game app on the store which sold

more than one million copies. It has

had over twelve million sales on the

apple app store alone not including

the android or windows store. This

alone is reason enough to be dubbedmost addictive app of all time.

    Elmas story.

Elma came to live with us 3 years agoafter 2 failed attempts to rehome her.The RSPCA removed her from a housewhere 16 animals (11 cats and 5 dogs)were found living in appalling conditions.Elma had been born in the house andhad never been outside. She had had tofight for food and still tends to scoop itout of her dish onto the floor to eat. Shehad no hair when she was found, due toa flea allergy, was riddled with fleasand had ears full of ear mites. Her skinwas cut and scabbed from scratching, and she was very frightened of people. The first family who took her home soonreturned her to the RSPCA. Elma is VERYvocal- she meows A LOT!- and the peo-ple who took her couldnt stand the noise.

The second family who took her asked us

to have her as she didnt get on with

their other cats. So she came to live withus. It took a while (and a lot of scratch-ing and biting) before she began to trustus and settle down. So after fosteringher for a while, we adopted her fromthe RSPCA! She still doesnt go outside

much- she doesnt do wet and cold, orwindy weather, or snow- and the backdoor has to be left open. She doesnt

like other cats and can see off ourneighbours Tom cat who is about 3 times

her size. She doesnt like dogs either and

will have a go at them. Apart from thatshes fine. She likes to be with my wife

all of the time (mummys girl!) and eve-

ryone else is second best in her eyes. And she still meows a lot!!!

    Dry Shampoo

    may seem like a modern

invention however it hasactually been around for at least

4 century's in France (however the

ingrediants were petty simple in the

1700s). Recently brands like Batiste have

made it popular however you can make it

yourself out of mainly salt and corn.

Problems with dry shampoo may lead to

    dandruff, hairloss and dry hair.

On the other hand, dry shampoo

comes in very handy when on

    holiday or camping.

Laws, some see them as the founda-

tions and walls of society while oth-

ers see them as limitations towards

an ultimate aim of having a free

life however some of the laws out

there in our wonderful world could

be considered slightly unusual orpossibly unnecessary:

Death, is a tender subject at the best

of times however could you imagine

a society where death became an

    outdated and obsolete concept? The

    remote Artic village of Longyear-

byen has outlawed it though their

lunacy isnt without merit, as the soil

    there isnt acceptant towards decom-

posing flesh they send all those on

the brink of death to the mainland

where they have a chance of surviv-

    al and respectful burial.

In current economic times where we

are all gripped by the ravishing

claws of a recession eating out has

become an exclusive venture yet if

you happen to live in Denmark

Horse found in meat productsknowing what is inside of something

youre putting in your mouth is slightly

scary. However, this is not able to af-

fect us and people are not bothered

by the whole thing. So, a danger or

not a danger, this still is a problem.

And its not just horse; pork and other

meats have been found in beef or

    other meat products.

    By Jonathan Deery

All over the news for the past few

months, the horse meat scandal has

certainly been revealing of a lot of

    companies and businesses. Tesco for

example was discovered initially for its

    100% beef burgers which actually

contained 29% horsemeat! This has not

been a problem before, but does this

really affect anything? Read on for

    both sides of the debate

We Dont Know What Were Eating

The problem of horsemeat has con-

cerned a lot of people. This is mainly

because of the drugs that could be

contained within the food. People are

right to be worried about this as it is a

very likely danger. Another problem is

not in the danger but the fact that we

dont know what were eating. If youpick up a burger that says 100% beef

on the box, you expect exactly that.

    Not horse.

    Does this Really Affect us?

On the other hand, does this really

need to be worried about? Products so

far have had no signs of drugs or dan-

    gerous chemicals, giving the indication

that the food is perfectly edible and

will do no harm. Somebody quoted:

The Horse meat scandal does notbother me in the slightest! A lot of

people choose to ignore the horse

meat scandal, rather than worry about

    something that is proven

    not to affect them.

    So Whats the Verdict?

    Overall, the Horsemeat

    Scandal has been very

    worrying and concerning.

    Drugs, dangerous chemi-

cals, all have been a dis-

    turbance to the public.

    TechnologyKate Russell answers...

    Why do people love

    technology so

    much?

    Sir Francis Bacon said

    knowledge is power and through

    the ages wealthy families would

amass huge libraries in their stately

homes as a symbol of their status.

These days you dont need physical

books to have access to knowledgethe Internet opens a world of in-

formation to you and now that we

    have connected smartphones and

tablets this knowledge can be deliv-

ered right into the palm of your

hand any time you have a whim to

    learn something new. Whether that

    something is finding the perfect

quote to start an article, checking

out reviews for tonights gigs in your

location, or just getting a bit better

at Temple Run, its hardly surprising

    we have fallen in

    love with our

    mobile con-

    nected

    devices.

Kate Russell has been writing about

    technology, gaming and the Internet

since 1995 and now appears week-

ly on BBC2 and BBC World News,

reporting for technology pro-gramme Click. A regular expert on

the sofa at ITVs Daybreak and var-

ious other TV and radio stations,

    PAPERMAIL answers...

    Are teenagers addicted

    to technology?

    In a nutshell, yes, how-

ever it is not just teen-

agers it is adults and children as

    well. Teenagers are usually the

    age group associated with technol-

ogy though because they use it the

most simply because it is easy to

use and it doesnt take much effort.

    Smartphone's such as the iPhone

are found in most teenagers pock-

ets now and they hold so much ir-

    relevant information such as Face-

    book and Twitter updates which

    just distract people from doing

    other worthwhile things.

    Direct messaging on phones now

makes it unimportant to speak to

someone face to face which scien-tists would say is debatably bad

    for our brains.

    The smartphone now replaces

    alarm clocks, timers, stop watches,

calculators, cameras, camcorders, video editing software's, calen-

    dars, games consoles, mail, ad-

    dress books, portable DVD play-

    ers, MP3 players, shopping lists,

    jotters, pads, papers, dicophones,

    dictionaries, SatNavs, tickets,

    torches and many more things.

    Smartphones save time and mon-

ey however they also make us a

    lot lazier.

In my opinion, social networking is

the most addictive waste of time

ever! It is also dangerous too as it

makes it easy for hackers to find

    out your personal information.

Cyber bullying is a whole new

type of bullying which has been

    invented by people sharing their

opinion or trying to show off on

    social networks!

    Despite this, social networks are

brilliant for finding and getting in

contact with old friends or people

who you may have once known.

They also allow you to share pic-

tures and videos with your friends

    easily without needing to pay

    anything.

The future of technology is mighty

however it is depressing to thinkthat as time goes on, out lives will

    revolve more and more around

    computers, tablets and

    smartphones. Smartphones will

soon become our life support -

without them we will be lost.

What else can we expect in the

future? The iPhone 36? Voice con-

    trolled houses? Free whole world

    Wifi? Or even holographicphones?

On the 18th and 19th December

    2012, the school performed

Grease, a musical set in the late

fifties. The cast was made up of 28

pupils, ranging from all years, andthey were supported by 7 teachers,

    who helped with costume, choreogra-

phy, music, stage changes and just

    generally making the production

    altogether.

With two year nine students taking

the roles of Danny and Sandy re-

    spectively, the performance was one

    of many interesting and entertaining

levels. The performance was a pupil

led production, with pupils sayingif they could change speeches or

even roles. Also, a lot of the pupils, if

    not all, provided costumes them-

    selves.

Before the final show Caitlin Sear,

who plays Sandy, said its going to

be a once in a lifetime perfor-

    mance!

However, lets not forget the people

who werent on stage, yet were stilla part of the production; the live

band supporting many of the songs

and the Border Studio providing sets

(below left). Teachers put many ex-

tra hours into making sure the pro-

duction went without a hitch, and

involved both live and prerec-orded aspects.

As well as the production, re-

    freshments and raffle tickets

were sold to help raise money

for the Kenya trip for 20 stu-

dents. They also sold biscuits and

helped with the look of the hampers

that each tutor in the school had

    provided items for.

Overall, the school provided agreat show for the

    community and we

    know this because

the last night was a super

    show and was sold out!

    Christmas

    Dinner Review

    When hot tasty gravy trickles

down your throat thats when the

fantastic flavors hit you. But when

the fabulous smell of roastingmeat oozes up your nose, your

    stomach rumbles and your taste

buds tingle. But an even better

feeling is when you get a plate

full of roast turkey followed by

    colourful vegetables and irresisti-

ble gravy. So many flavors and

colours and smells all put togeth-

er to make a delicious Christmas

    dinner.

    And usually this once-a-year cel-

ebration dinner is topped off with

    a traditional Christmas pudding.

A delicious rich cake filled with

    dried fruit and nuts sometimes

    served with brandy crme or

brandy butter. Or the other op-

tion we had at DSMS is an or-

    ange cheesecake with whitesquirty cream.

    What a great Christmas dinner!

TV studio I couldn't believe how

many jobs both in front and be-

hind camera there were. For a

start you need a good script writ-

ten, then someone to run it onthe auto-cue, someone to set up

the camera shots and the set and

    sometimes even a group

of people to sort out the green

    screen.

You can check out the Wyvern TV

    for yourself at

    www.youtube.com/DSMSwyvern

or scan the QR code (below).

If you have any more ideas you

can leave them in the commentsbox of the YouTube video or

    tweet them to us

    @DSMS_Wyvern

On the 27th February 2012 the DSMS

TV Studio was finished and 3 journalists

from the Wyvern took on the challenge

of launching a brand new Wyvern TV

    show.

Hosted by pupils in the school and with

stories coming from local and national

sources we hope that you will enjoy our

monthly program which will get up-

loaded to the Wyvern Blog and

    YouTube.

In the 1 year we have been running the

Wyvern TV we have interviewed MP of

Darlington - Jenny Chapman, editor of

the Northern Echo - Peter Barron, free-lance Journalist - Ian Lamming, Head

School Governor - Doctor David Hall

and many more people from all around

    the North East of England.

We also cover stories which are cov-

ered in the newspaper however on TV

we can show videos of the story in-

    stead of just pictures.

Each program we like to make unique,

inserting a funny line or a quirky story.

We are not trying to rival BBC or ITVnews, instead we are trying to make an

interesting news show which pupils from

    DSMS will watch and enjoy.

Each program takes us around 2

weeks to make. This includes script

    writing, filming, finding stories and

editing it when it is finished. The epi-

sodes vary from around 10-20minutes depending on what were

reporting on and who were talking

    to.

Each video we make and upload gets

around 200 views however we are

currently trying to do more advertis-

    ing around school.

Apart from the Wyvern, the TV Studio

is going to be used in lessons such as

English, Art and CBL.We hope the TV studio will be used to

its potential and give pupils an insight

to how a TV studio works.

    PAPERMAIL:

The TV Studio has been in fully work-

that it has been an amaz-

    Making music videos, filming dra-

ma pieces, producing a news show orjust experiencing how a TV studio

    works.

    Before During After

Over the summer holidays so many

changes happened at DSMS, it al-

    most made the school unrecognisable.

From new windows and fences to

    redecorated maths classrooms and a

    new wall outside the school.

    These changes were much needed

though as the old windows were dan-

gerous and the old school wall was ex-

    tremely old.

There is a full report on the changes

during Episode 5 of the Wyvern TV.

    Changes in the School

Enrichment WeekTextbooks, timetables and exercisebooks were all dismissed for a week

    of creative subjects. These captivat-

ed pupils in a unique way that al-

lows technology lessons to take a

front seat as we had entire days

that focus on creating one-off pro-

jects that allowed a welcome break

    from our ordinary lessons.

While many pupils ventured out oneducational trips, others stayed in-

    side school creating different items

in multiple subjects. For example in

    Woodwork lessons we created

    nameplates that were personnel to

us rather than the target markets we

usually work towards, and we have

tried out new features to be added

to lessons like app making and much

    more!

Overall Enrichment week was a val-

uable experience that has enhancedthe curriculum in a new, refreshing

    way.

Darlington FCDarlington FC has struggled over the

past year or two going through liq-

    uidisation and moving from their

25,000 seater stadium to a 1,500standing and sitting area next to

    Sainsburys! Luckily though, they came

out with 2 excellent coaches in Martin

Grey and Brian Atkinson (both ex-

    Sunderland players). Although Dar-

lington has gone down many leagues

they still have quality players. At the

moment Darlington are in their first

season since relegation and are top

of the league above rivals Spen-

which they used to be. With Martin

Grey and Brian Atkinson at the helm

    The Big Move

Now Darlington Mowden Parkhave officially moved intotheir new 27,500 seat stadi-um, things are looking on theup for this once small rugbyclub. The club gained the mon-ey to buy this stadium by sell-

ing their previous land for 6million to bellways and theyused 2 million of this moneyto buy this huge stadium. The

remaining 4 million is beingused to develop 42 acres ofland across the road into 8 rug-by pitches, a football pitch anda 3G pitch however plans havebeen halted on this stage asrecent surveillance of the land

shows signs of the near extinctspecies of Grey Crested Newtand this means that all plans ofbuilding have to be stopped

until these Newts are evacuatedfrom the area. The current setupof the stadium is very similar tothe way Darlington F.C had itpreviously but Mowden Parkhave just replaced the footballgoals with Rugby posts and

changed the Darlington F.Csigns with Mowden ones.By James Allison
