Shintoism believes that everything has a spirit, their main god was the sun called Tensho daijin. Their people go to a Shrine to worship the gods.
SHRINE
The Japanese think the design of a shrine should be simple. However, Japanese care about the landscape design, arrangement, and embellishment. Even though Japanese prefer simplicity in the shrine, but the appearance should still be mysterious.

It’s purpose is to isolate the human world from the heaven. So it is a door or entrance to the heaven. Most of them are built by woods and are usually painted red.
