by Lisa Bahmueller, New Student Orientation Leader

Hello, my name is Lisa Bahmueller and I am a sophomore majoring in Early Childhood and Special Education. I am the editor of the

community service club, Circle K, and I’m a part of Arts and Crafts Educators Club as well. I’m incredibly proud to say that I am on the Orientation Team here at Ship. This opportunity has enabled me to get the

most out of my experience here. I hope that the Orientation Leaders and I have been able to help you and your students all make a smooth and

successful transition from high school to college. It’s our job to help make Shippensburg feel like home.

1. What was your transition like from high school to college?

In high school, I loved going through the halls and knowing everyone that I passed. When I

got to Ship, I was put into a totally unfamiliar environment and this made me nervous to reach out. I stuck to a small group of friends because that was all I felt comfortable with. It took some

encouragement from my Resident Assistant to push me to be the outgoing person that I was in high school. With this nudge, I dove into as many social interactions as I could. This helped me meet all

the wonderful people I know today and be a part of some of the organizations on campus.

2. What did you learn freshman year that you carried into sophomore year?

Coming into sophomore year, I learned that YOU determine how successful you are

throughout your college experience. You are in control of your study habits, friend groups, down time, experiences, and most importantly your attitude. If you wake up everyday with the mindset that

you’re going to succeed, then you will. Study hard and be confident that you will do well. I’ve learned that you should always be your biggest fan. Don’t ever forget that YOU are in control. Please

remind your students of these things!

3. How do you manage an increasingly busy work load with the activities that you are involved

with?

I’ve found that time management is one of the most important skills you need as a college

student. You are constantly being given projects and assignments and they’re not all due the next day like they are in high school. You have to learn how to organize your studying, extracurricular

activities, social time, and try to find time to take a nap! It’s a critical skill that I learned when I got to college, and I’m constantly working on improving it.

4. What resource would you recommend students using if they haven’t already started using it?

The Learning Center seems to be a hidden gem that everyone forgets about! With this resource, you can get your papers reviewed, get tutoring in all subjects, get help with research, and so

much more. It’s free and easy, which are two words that any college student likes to hear!

Updates From Campus Offices

Act V Productions presents Heathers: The Musical written by Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy. Based on the 1988 cult classic Heathers, this musical tells the story of Veronica Sawyer, a senior, who would give anything to be popular like the Heathers. The Heathers are not only on top of the high school food chain, but they are also cruel and unforgiving. When Veronica manages to impress the leader of the Heathers and is allowed into their clique, she quickly realizes that being popular comes with a price. Meanwhile, JD, a mysterious new student, has caught the attention of Veronica. When an accident gets out of control, these two decide to rid their high school of the callously popular elite through catchy tunes. Content Warning: This production does include the use of strong language, gun violence, mention of suicide and date rape, and partial nudity.

Tickets are $5.00 with an SU ID and $7.00 for General Admission. Tickets will be on sale at the CUB from 9:00a.m. till 3:30p.m. on April 20th, 21st, 24th, 25th, 26th and online at http://clubsship.tix.com.
