4 CONSTITUTION TYPE CLASS (BATCH 2) (CA)

BACKGROUNDWhereas the Baton Rogue class of the previous generation sig-naled the pinnacle of the “Earth” fleet, the Constitution classwould herald the beginning of a true Star Fleet for the entireFederation. Indeed, it’s difficult to image the Federation Fleetwithout the Heavy Cruiser at the front of it, exploring strangenew worlds, and boldly going where no man has gone before.

Though dated by today’s standards, The original configurationof the Constitution class, launched in 2245 STC, still representsthe single largest breakthrough in Federation naval science overthe last 100 years. With the installation of the PB-31 warp en-gines, a refinement on the PBX-30 engines found on theBonaventure, Federation starships could now cross in mere daysor weeks what the previous generation of starships would re-quire months or even years to manage.

Strategically, the Constitution Class, being able to deliver signifi-cant firepower at high speeds, meant that the federation couldnow both dramatically expand and more effectively protect itsborders. With the steadily increasing threat of the Klingon Em-pire, the deployment of a Constitution class vessel allowed for aquick response to hostile action, as well as present a consider-able show of force to any other would-be enemy.

In addition to the vessels’ raw power, new scientific equipment, thanks to the Duotronic breakthroughs installed within hercomputer cores, would allow the Constitution class to performsurveys with higher fidelity and accuracy than had been man-aged in the past. As a natural result, when a Constitution classvessel was not strategically engaged, she would more than likelybe assigned to chart and detail the frontiers of Federation space.

Tactically, the Constitution class suffered only with its depend-ence on the already sorely-dated Phase Laser technology. Klin-gon disruptor technology had already surpassed Federationbeam weaponry, making most commanders heavily reliant onphoton torpedoes. Fortunately the twin launchers of the Consti-tution class would prove a formidable offense, though the prob-lem of the Phase Laser would plague Federation starships forseveral years to come, and prove particularly damning in theupcoming Four Year’s war.

Overall, The first version of the Constitution class would solidifyher place in Star Fleet history. Indeed, the success of missions

such as Captain Robert April’s three year mission into the fron-tier would embolden the fledgling Star fleet as well as helpsecure humanity’s place within the galaxy.

With improvements made to the PB-31 engine design, Theoriginal configuration (Mod-1) of the class would be phasedout by early 2251. By that time, all 16 ships of the class wouldbe uprated to this specification.

MODERNIZATION PROGRAM

BACKGROUNDEven as the fielded Constitution class vessels returned from theirfirst or second tours of duty, refinements in the construction anddesign of the PB-31 engines continued. Already impressed withthe dramatic improvements of the engine design, Star Fleetactively encouraged experiments for improvements in bothoutput and efficiency.

By 2251, a more refined version of the PB-31 (the PB-31/Mod 2)was available for use in Star Fleet, and what better class of shipto install them on than the wildly successful Constitution class.Every ship in the class was ordered for uprating to the new en-gines as soon as their current tours were over, a task whichwould be completed within a year.

Though the uprating of the Constitution class was mandatory, the actual effects of the MOD-2 uprating were, at first, relativelyminor. The PB-31 Mod 2 design was mostly an efficiency im-provement, allowing for more stability at higher warp speeds, aswell as subtle improvements in the intercooler assemblies at theaft of each nacelle.

Indeed, the uprating to the new “Starmark” type celestial naviga-tion computer, which was created to coincide with the newengines, proved to be more of a boon, since the older “Gargon”type sometimes struggled to keep up with the Constitution class’highest warp speeds.

The most dramatic improvement, perhaps, on the MOD-2 designwould come during the Four Years War, with the advent of aworkable phaser weapon. Though technically a modernizationwithin the MOD-2 design period, the MK-IX/01 phaser woulddramatically change the Federation’s offensive capabilities, put-ting the Star Fleet well and ahead of most of the Federation’sadversaries, and proving a decisive advantage at the Battle ofAxanar in 2256 STC.

Unfortunately, the Four Years War would also see the first lossesto the class. First, the Valiant was destroyed in an ambush whileguarding a supply convoy. The Valiant’s screw sacrificed them-selves to save the thousands of lives in the convoy, and techni-cally won the battle, but also marked the first loss of the newgeneration of starships.

Three months later, in a more pitched battle, the Federation

would go on to lose the starships Kitty Hawk and America, adevastating blow which briefly but dramatically set back Fed-eration operations. With their losses, Star Fleet became nervousabout risking the most valuable of their ships in open warfare, and dispatched the remaining Constitution class vessels toother duties in the frontier for the remainder of the war.

Despite this moment of indignity, the Constitution class hadalready proven itself as a powerful battle-ready starship, andthe Klingons had learned to fear them. Klingon raiding forceswould avoid encounters where a Constitution class starshipwould be present, allowing the Federation to solidly secure itsfrontier even as war continued along the border.

Surviving Constitution class vessels would remain in this con-figuration for more than a decade, as the war’s end alsobrought an end to the rapid development of starship technolo-gies. Further refinements to the PB-31, however, along with aradical improvement in deflector technology, would see theclass uprated once again to the MOD-3 configuration in the2260s.

Programs:Modernization completed July 2251 STC.

Modernization:In Apr 2253, the MK-IX/01 “Firelance” type Phaser was intro-duced to the class, replacing the “Tesla” type MK VII PhaseLaser Cannon. Changes were made ‘in the field’ at the firstpossible opportunity for each starship, and made use of theolder weapon’s existing housing. This ‘field modernization’ wascompleted for the class by the end of Jun 2253.

Beginning in 2264, surviving members of the class wereuprated to (MOD-3) specifications., primarily for the replace-ment of the PB-31 engines with uprated PB-31 (MOD-3) en-gines and well as a more radical uprating to the shield deflec-tor system. This modernization was completed on the thesevessels in Dec 2265, with the relaunch of the USS Exeter (NCC-1706). Specifics of this modernization can be found in the“Constitution Class Starships (Mod-3)” article.

Operational:Class Has been modernized to Constitution class (MOD-3) as ofMarch 2265. As such, the information in this article is techni-cally obsolete and remains for archival purposes as of March2265.

16 BONHOMME RICHARD TYPE CLASS (BATCH 1) (CA)

BACKGROUNDThough the Four Years War didn’t come as much of a surprise toStar Fleet, the Federation none-the-less found itself sorely lack-ing in combat capabilities when compared to the powerful navyof the Klingon Empire. What was worse, most of the fleet con-sisted of older Earth vessels which had not yet taken advantageof the new matter/anti-matter drive systems.

To answer this wartime shortcoming, Star Fleet quickly rushedup the appropriation of a planned additional batch of Constitu-tion class vessels and dedicated them as a new class of starship, the BonHomme Richard class. The new class would take advan-tage in interim improvements in both shield and deflector tech-nology, as well as make use of the new phaser technology, mak-ing the vessels top-of-the-line for combat performance.

The needs of the war, however, also saw the BonHomme Rich-ard class nearly completely stripped of scientific laboratories, andmany other amenities found on the venerable Constitution classships. This would, of course, allow the vessels to be pressed intoservice immediately, but fall short of the capabilities found in themother design.

Through the war, the ships of the BonHomme Richard class didmore than prove themselves, as they proved instrumental inseveral skirmishes along the disputed frontier (particularly afterthe Constitution class vessels were moved out of the war zone). The new shields and phasers matched and surpassed the weap-onry and defenses of the Klingon ships of the period. In fact, thenew shields proved so successful that they would provide theimpetus for the next evolution of the Constitution class itself.

The end of the war, however, brought difficulties with the class,as she was ill-equipped for much use aside from direct combat, and her expense was hard to justify to a ‘return-to-peace’ politi-cal mindset. Star Fleet found itself heavily engaged in a pro-tracted series of debates over the BonHomme Richard’s eventu-ally fate. The last four planned ships of the class (NCC-1728 thruNCC-1731) would be cancelled and eventually re-appropriated.

Eventually, the ships of the class would be outfitted in a mannersimilar to the Constitution class, making the two classes virtuallyidentical (aside from her deflection grid) for several years. Bon-Homme Ricard class vessels, however, would still be seen as the‘also ran’ ships, with the Constitution class gaining much of the

prestige in the 2250s and 2260s.

Fortunately, this lack of prestige would not end the lifespan ofthese vessels. In the early 2260s, as the Monoceros testing ofthe new Linear Warp engines proved successful, several vesselsof this class would be reconfigured to include the new drive, creating the Endeavor class in August 2263.

The remaining ships of the class would get their turn at uprat-ing a decade later, as Star Fleet once again found itself needingto technologically upgrade their vessels. In 2272, survivingvessels of the BonHomme Richard class would undergo thesame uprating as the legendary Constitution and Enterprise, bringing the variant design finally back into the fold as mem-bers of the Constitution (U) class.

5 CONSTITUTION TYPE CLASS (BATCH 3) (CA)

BACKGROUNDIt is perhaps telling that even after nearly thirty years since thisversion of the Constitution class first left space dock in 2264, themajority of Federation citizens still regard it as the most impor-tant and recognizable of all Federation starships. Indeed, thanksto the profound exploits of ships like the Enterprise under thecommand of James Kirk, the class quickly assumed a legendaryreputation far surpassing that of any other class of ship in Fed-eration, or even member-planet histories.

This version of the ship would represent the pinnacle of 2260stechnology, pushing the PB-31 engine design to its upper effi-cient limits, well beyond its intended specifications of WF 8 as amaximum velocity. The Enterprise herself would hit a speedrecord of warp 14.1 (2803c) (though this was through sabotageand nearly destroyed the vessel), a record which wouldn’t bemet again until the advent of the Excelsior class decades later.

The “Galahad” shield generators first used on the BonHommeRichard class were finally inlaid into the vessels’ frame, improv-ing the ships’ overall survivability in the field. The improvedefficiency and yield of the MK IX/02 phasers also meant that theConstitution class now carried the most potent beam weapon ofall major galactic powers at the time, surpassing even the Klin-gon disruptors of the period.

Even what would normally be considered a subtle improve-ment, such as those in life support systems, would radically in-crease the ships’ capabilities. The Mod-3 design could carry andsupport twice the crew of the Mod-2 design, and allow for awider array of missions (particularly scientific endeavors) and formuch longer durations. It was this improvement that wouldembolden Star Fleet to start the ‘five year mission’ explorationtradition, which lives on to this day.

Unfortunately, the aggressive exploration of the Federation, using the Constitution class as its vanguard, would take its toll inthe middle 2260s. Six of the vessels would be lost to variousdangers in the frontier, with the Defiant lost near Tholian spacenot even two years out of space dock. For many on the Federa-tion appropriations committee, this was a clear sign that despitethe stunning success of ships like the Enterprise, the heavycruiser design had finally seen its day.

Recognizing this fact, Star Fleet engineers would look at the

basic successes of the venerable Constitution class, as well asother Federation ships, and redesign the heavy cruiser fromthe ground up. The end result of this project would be theConstitution (U) class, which would launch in November of2271, giving the old heavy cruisers a substantial new lease onlife.
