Throssell Street, Collie west from Steere Street, ca 1910 (024836PD www.slwa.wa.gov.au with permission)

The photograph above shows that 101 Throssell Street was the part of a four bay building comprising 55-58 Throssell Street. The Post Office Directories do not provide street numbers for Collie until 1934. From 1935 until 1939, Collie Meat Supply (David Forgan, butcher) is listed at the site. Dave Forgan is listed in Collie from at least 1924. From 1940 until 1949, JF Pike operates a butcher’s shop at the address. Pike had another store at 28 Forrest Street. From 1945 until at least 1947 (the records for 1948 are missing), Griffin Coal Mining Co Ltd are also listed at 57 Throssell Street. In 2016 the site is vacant. Information on the demolition of the building is not readily available in Council records. It is thought that the place was demolished some decades ago. Photographic evidence suggests that the place was the western third of a building of which only the eastern third remains.

Throssell Street, Collie west from Steere Street, ca 1910 (024836PD www.slwa.wa.gov.au with permission)

The above photograph (dated about 1910) shows 59 and 60 Throssell Street: the western most single storey building. Architectural detailing to the parapet is missing. The Post Office Directories do not record street numbers in Collie until 1934. It is likely that 59 Throssell Street (left of the two tenancies) was occupied by the Beehive Drapery (proprietor WC White) from 1934 until 1938. Stan Croker is also listed at the address in 1938. From 1939 until 1949 when the Post Office Directory records cease, Les J Milroy, mercer, is listed. There is no listing for 60 Throssell Street (right tenancy) until 1940 when Corot and Co, frocks and millinery are listed until 1949. Corot and Co were listed previously at 80 Throssell Street. Pak-it Computers opened at the address in January 2015. A truck collision caused damage to the verandah in late 2015. It is owners intention to replace the damaged verandah with a bullnose style verandah consistent with that shown in early photographs. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Shop, 105-107 Throssell Street, is a single storey brick and iron commercial building. The rendered parapet has simple decorative features, with painted capping, echoed in the steel awning over the pavement. There are three slender steel supporting posts to the verandah. The shop facades are glazed. No 105 has a central, re-entrant door. No 107 is currently closed off to the public with steel mesh fencing. The original bullnosed verandah has been replaced with a flat roof verandah.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Crown Hotel, 113 Throssell Street, Collie, constructed in the Federation Filigree style of architecture in about 1901, has cultural heritage significance. Although its second-storey verandahs and much of the detailing has been lost it makes a positive contribution to the streetscape of Collie. It has historic and social value as an important social venue for generations, having been in continuous operation as a hotel since 1901 and it contributes to the community’s sense place.

HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION: The Crown Hotel is first recorded in the Post Office Directories in 1902 with F W Crow as proprietor. Mr Crow was recorded at the Colliefields Hotel in the previous 2 years. The Southern Times of 20 July 1901 (p3) records the opening of the Crown Hotel and describes it as a ‘valuable addition to the houses of accommodation at Collie’. The building is a very commodious one and is fitted throughout with the most up-to-date furniture and appliances.’ The article describes the hotel’s facilities including the spacious vestibule, dining room (24 x 20ft), ‘unusually well fitted suite of kitchens’, commercial room, sitting room, bar, saloon bar and billiard room. Fourteen rooms, including a drawing room, club room, eleven bedrooms (mostly single bed) and two bathrooms (one each for ladies and gentlemen) were located upstairs. The balcony measured 66 x 12 feet. The hotel, which was to open on 20 July 1901, cost approximately £3,000 with an additional £750 for furnishing. The hotel would be managed by Mr and Mrs Crow. The Post Office Directories only show Mr Crow at the Crown Hotel in 1902 with JH Luke recorded for the next three years. The next nine years see a number of licensees at the hotel until AA McManus is shown in the Directories from 1915 to 1923. William Potter, P Meagher and WE Chick are listed at the Crown Hotel between 1926 and 1934, followed by RF Gray from 1935 until 1940, and AC Rigg from 1942 until 1949 when the Post Office Directories cease. 1921 saw hotels in Collie and elsewhere delicensed. An earlier poll had determined that at least one, but up to three, hotels in Collie should be delicensed. During the enquiry is was stated that both the Crown and Victoria Hotels ‘were in the centre of the town and were very necessary for the continuance of business, and that if either of these licences were affected it would cause very great public inconvenience’. The enquiry determined that the Miners Arms Hotel on Throssell Street should be the only hotel to lose its licence (South Western Times 17 September 1921, p5) The Crown Hotel was sold by the Ginninup Vale Pastoral Company for £10,000 to Mr E Morgan in March 1929 (The West Australian 21 March 1929, p18). In January 1930, it was sold again, this time to the Swan Brewery for £13,250.

(Western Mail, 28 November 1935, p10) The Sunday Times reported that Mr Roy Gray, proprietor of the Crown Hotel for nearly 5 years, proposed alterations to the hotel at a cost of more than £2,000 (20 August 1939, p20). In 1940 proposed improvements to the hotel were reported, including a 50ft main bar, saloon bar, a lounge, large entrance hall and tiled front walls. Five new rooms and four bathrooms and a septic system were proposed at a cost of £700 and refrigeration system (£600) would be installed. Total cost of the works was approximately £5,000 and was to be undertaken by the licensee (RF Gray) and the Swan Brewery Ltd (The West Australian 3 February 1940, p16). The reconstructed and refurnished Crown Hotel was opened by the Mayor, Mr J Morrison (The West Australian 1 July 1940, p14). Mr and Mrs Alan Pascall of the Crown Hotel were farewelled in July 1952. Mr and Mrs Powell took over management of the hotel (Sunday Times 20 July 1952, p24S).

The Crown Hotel continues to operate as a hotel with accommodation available. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Crown Hotel, built c1910 is a two storey painted/renderd brick and iron hotel in the Federation Filigree style of architecture, with a central decorative half circle to the parapet roof. It has lost its original upper storey verandah roof and balcony. There is a flat steel shelter above the windows of the uppoer floor, and a suspended iron roof over the pavement. Door and window openings to the ground floor have arched heads. On the top floor the door has been closed off. There are six timber sash windows to the upper floor facing the street. The west side of the buiding is red face brick. The east aide abuts the adjacent building with a dividing fire wall.

HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION: The Post Office Directories record Mr A Bilbe in Collie from 1902 until 1925. Arthur Bilbe was a grocer who was prominent in the business and civic life of Collie. It appears that Mr Bilbe had diverse business interests as he advertised widely for bullock teams and for a farm manager. Other advertising sought ‘a competent engine driver’ at Bilbe’s West Collie Sawmills.30 In 1920 the Post Office Directories list A Bilbe, farmer. In 1919, Bilbe was selling a farm, located about 6 miles from Collie.31 Bilbe and his wife, Mary Ellen appear in the Collie Post Office Directories again from 1933 until 1938, listed during this time at 65 Wittenoom St. Bilbe, who had been living in West Perth, died in 1950.32 In May 1909 it was reported that Mr Hartley had recently purchased Mr Bilbe’s business (Sunday Times 25 May 1909, p5). The shop which Mr Hartley was about to vacate was burnt to the ground in the fire of 21 May 1909 which destroyed properties between the Colliefields Hotel and the Crown Hotel on Throssell Street.

The 1996 Shire of Collie Municipal Heritage Inventory shows two houses and describes them as ‘two remaining houses which were rented out by Mr Henderson to railway employees’. Evidence suggests that there were originally four houses on the two lots54 which are thought to have been constructed for railway employees. Anecdotal evidence describes the houses as two small homes on the corner and a large house with a separate flat to the east.

Street names do not appear in the Collie Post Office Directories until 1934. At this time, the occupants of the then 86 Throssell Street were Mr G Luce and Mrs WJ Luce. Mr Luce was a plumber who occupied the premises next door. They are listed at the address until 1937. There is no listing for the neighbouring 87 Throssell Street during this time so it is possible that Mr Luce and Mrs Luce occupied the larger house and the separate flat as married couples are not usually listed separately.

There is no occupant listed until 1940 when Miss Vera Williams is the occupant. The next occupant is W Wilson from 1944 until 1946. From 1947 until the records cease in 1949, N Milligan is listed.

There is no specific occupant listed at 87 Throssell Street until Mrs R Flynn from 1947 until records cease in 1949.

James Crocker is listed as the occupant of 88 Throssell Street from 1934 when street addresses appear in the Post Office Directories until the records cease in 1949.

89 Throssell Street is first shown as occupied by F O’Donnell from 1934 until 1936. After that time he is listed at 90 Throssell Street (now 143 Throssell Street). Thomas Russell is listed in 1937 and 1938 followed by I Ainsworth in 1939 and Charles Wasley from 1940 to 1945. JM Kinsella is the occupant from 1946 until the records cease in 1949.
