Dear parents, carers and friends of our school, Shoal Bay Public School “Meet and Greet” Family Evening Tomorrow night I am looking forward to meeting and catching up with many families from our school community. This will also be a great opportunity for you to meet your child’s teacher and begin the important home/ school relationship that is so vital for your child’s continuing education. The BBQ and family evening will begin at 5.30pm. Our school P&C will be providing a sausage sizzle, cakes, sweets, etc., cold drinks with funds raised going to the P&C. A reminder that donations of cakes, sweets, etc. for the evening would be greatly appreciated. New Pots If you have visited the school over the past few days you would not have been able to miss the beautiful new pots that have been located outside our office. Mrs Bzadough and a team of helpers have been working on the tiling for a number of months during 2014 and they are finally completed. Congratulations …they look fantastic. Professional learning This year we are continuing to uphold our school motto “Excellence Through Effort”. This applies to both students and staff and as we strive to create wonderful learning environments for our classes so that all students can achieve to their potential. Ongoing professional learning for our staff is critical to ensure that we are moving forward and can achieve this goal. Last week our Kindergarten teachers began the first stage of training in a program called L3 which stands for “Language, Learning and Literacy”. L3 provides systematic, explicit instruction in reading and writing in the classroom on a daily basis. Students also participate in carefully selected independent, individual or group literacy learning tasks. Our teachers will attend 12 half day professional sessions throughout the year. Last Friday and Saturday Mr and Mrs Beck, Mrs Bzadough, Mr Hamshaw and myself attended a two day conference in Sydney titled “Ignite the Spark’. We attended a variety of workshops that covered topics related to catering for individual learning needs of students. We were pleased to note that our teachers already use many of the strategies to provide the best opportunities for our students. New information and strategies that we learnt will be passed onto our staff via staff meetings. Attendance There have been a few changes to the Department of Education and Communities Attendance Policy in 2015. Please see the attached brochure that explains the policy in detail. Two important changes are: 1.” Parents are required to explain the absences of their children from school promptly and within seven school days to the school. An explanation for absence must be provided to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence”; 2. “Exemption can no longer be granted for students travelling for reasons such as the purpose of a family holiday, family business, bereavement or other reasons during school terms”. Dear parents, carers and friends of our school,

Shoal Bay Public School “Meet and Greet” Family Evening

Tomorrow night I am looking forward to meeting and catching up with many families from our school community.

New Pots

If you have visited the school over the past few days you would not have been able to miss the beautiful new pots that have been located outside our office. Mrs Bzadough and a team of helpers have been working on the tiling for a number of months during 2014 and they are finally completed. Congratulations …they look fantastic.

Professional learning

This year we are continuing to uphold our school motto “Excellence Through Effort”.

Last Friday and Saturday Mr and Mrs Beck, Mrs Bzadough, Mr Hamshaw and myself attended a two

day conference in Sydney titled “Ignite the Spark’. We attended a variety of workshops that covered topics related to catering for individual learning needs of students. We were pleased to note that our teachers already use many of the strategies to provide the best opportunities for our students. New information and strategies that we learnt will be passed onto our staff via staff meetings.

Attendance

There have been a few changes to the Department of Education and Communities Attendance Policy in 2015. Please see the attached brochure that explains the policy in detail. Two important changes are:

1.” Parents are required to explain the absences of their children from school promptly and within seven school days to the school. An explanation for absence must be provided to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence”;

2. “Exemption can no longer be granted for students travelling for reasons such as the purpose of a family holiday, family business, bereavement or other reasons during school terms”.

Cabling

We are very excited to announce that our wireless cabling has been completed thoughout the school. Students and staff can now access the internet more readily in their classrooms using wireless access.

P&C Fun Run

We will be holding an adidas School Fun Run as a major fundraising event this year. The event will be held on Tuesday, 29 July within the school grounds.

The adidas School Fun Run is a healthy, fun and active fundraiser that en-sures we send the right message to our students about getting active, having fun and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The main focus of this

event is on participation. Family support is most appreciated as we en-courage all students to get involved.

All students will receive a Sponsorship Form today, to help collect spon-

sorship on behalf of the school. The funds raised will be used to pur-chase new play equipment for the Early Stage 1 playground.

We ask all parents to read the Sponsorship form and sign the front page

to grant permission for their child to fundraise and participate in this event. Students who raise just $10 or more will receive a reward for

their effort. In the

Sponsorship form you will also find many other benefits like the chance to win a family holiday to Disneyland! Students wanting to track their

progress and use online fundraising, can do so by logging onto schoolfun-run.com.au/students and creating a Student Profile Page.

Finally, we would like to welcome parents and family members to attend

the adidas School Fun Run event day at the school on Tuesday, 29 July to help cheer on our students. If you would like to volunteer to help

out on the day please contact the school on 4981 1007. Thank you, good luck and happy fundraising!

Cara Hudson, on behalf of the P&C.

Dental Van visit

All children were recently given a parent information note and permission form to complete by Tootsie, the tooth. The Dental Van will visit the school from Monday 23 February and offers free dental check up and clean plus a bag of goodies for each child who attends. The dentists will contact parents/ carers if there is a need for any follow up dental work. They will provide a referral for you to take to your own dentist if you prefer this to be followed up locally. No other dental work (other than the check and clean) will occur without your permission.

Please return the completed forms to the office prior to this visit. If you did not receive a note please contact the office for a form.

High School Students

I have enjoyed catching up with some of our ex-students who are now settling into high school. Some of them have been arriving very early (particularly on a Wednesday) to pick up younger siblings. While this is a good reason to be here I would like parents to remind them that they need to wait near the library and not disrupt lessons or be rude to staff otherwise they will have to wait outside school grounds until the bell goes.

‘Drop and Go’

Parents are asked not to park along Rigney St on the school side as this area is designated as a ‘drop and go’ area. The ‘drop and go’ area enables parents a place to safely drop off students before moving on.

Thank you to SBPS P&C

Last year our P&C kindly donated $5,000 towards resources for our school. Approximately $2,500 purchased home readers and readers for use in the classroom for K-2 students. These are already being used in our classrooms. The remainder purchased a variety of sport/PE equipment. We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of these resources so that they can be put to good use.

YMCA Shoal Bay News

We have started the new school year with lots of new and old faces

attending the Y’s for Before and After School Care program. Sadly, Ben has resigned as Coordinator for Shoal Bay but will stay on with the

YMCA for any casual work and looks forward to seeing his Shoal Bay friends. The children have enjoyed catching up with Mallory, Bianca,

Lauren and Jane. We are all very excited for our new coordinator Melissa Barnard to start this week. Melissa, has years of experience

working as an OSHC Coordinator and has started her induction and training this week.

We still have plenty of vacancies for both Before and After School Care

so please go to our website ymcansw.org.au to download your 2015 enrolment form or call our YMCA Shoal Bay team on 0409 241 252.
