Rabbi Barry Blum

Hanukkah: “ Not By Power or Might” (Zechariah 4:7) By Barry Blum

In Judaism there are often debates and different tradition as to how to light the Hanukkah

Menorah. The House of Shammai followed the tradition that one lights all eight lights and

each subsequent night one removes a candle or light. This process seems a bit flawed. In-

stead of enriching the grandeur of the miracle, one subtracts a candle each night. The joy

of reaching the pinnacle of the miracle of eight days is lost.

Along came Hillel, the sage who taught one should add one light each night. Together we

experience the joy of the miracle of the eight lights. This interpretation serves to follows

the ancient story of the Maccabees who used a small cruise of oil, that miraculously lasted

eight days. The majority of Jews throughout the world follow the tradition from the School

of Hillel. Many families include all the participants assembled, adding a theme for each

light. Together we celebrate the miracle of the lights.

Creativity and variety of interpretations continued throughout Jewish history. Maimoni-

des taught that Jews should light eighty candles. Rabbi Moses Isserles included his

version in the Shulchan Aruch, teaching that each person should light his/her candles in

a distant place. His interpretation contains a mystical element.

“Not by Power or Might”, but by virtue of the spirit and passion to celebrate the miracle of

the Lights, the Jewish people have survived. Together, may our lighting of Hanukkiyah re-

mind us to help others. May they discover the light of hope, joy and peace in the world

around us.

Hanukkah begins on Sunday December 22nd and continues for eight full Days. May our joy

and celebration contain acts of Tikkun Olam, Fixing our World sharing our gifts with those

in need.

Happy Hanukkah,

Rabbi Barry Blum

WE NEED YOU!

V’natnu – Because G-d commands it.

You may have seen the flyers and emails going around explaining our Patron Program and urg-ing you to participate. We started this campaign in the spring instead of raising dues, and in-cluded it as a line item in our budget. Unfortunately, we fell short of our goal and now we need YOU.

V’natnu -- Each shall give. Not, for people of faith, because our government requires it, but because our God commands it. We take care of each other. V’natnu – Comes from the Hebrew word “natan” – to give. (I know, I know, you’ve got “natan’ to give). But dig a little deeper… Look at the word “natan”. It’s a palindrome, spelled the same way backwards as forward. And that is exactly what the word is trying to tell us. When we give, we are not only giving something, but also receiving something. What do you receive from CBENT, from our synagogue community, from the clergy, staff, and volunteers? We use your money to support all of the above (minus the volunteers, they just do it out of the goodness of their hearts!). So please, dig deep, become a patron, help us reach our goal, and fulfill the commandment to take care of each other. V’natnu means “each shall give,” and I promise you, if you do, the feeling is priceless. Happy Hanukkah,, Amy --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------————————————————--

The Yearly Miracle of Hanukkah

On the Jewish Calendar, Hanukkah always begins on the 25th day of Kislev. This year that day begins the evening of December 23, just

after the Winter Solstice. The 8 Days of Hanukkah will thus occur at that time of year when nights for us are longest. The New Moon of

Tevet also takes place during Hanukkah , making these long nights even darker.

And so, it is fitting that Hanukkah , The Festival of Light, should occur at the darkest time of the year. Hanukkah is the celebration

of miracles. It is truly an annual miracle that shortly following each Hanukkah the days begin to first get longer, then warmer, as our

world prepares for rebirth and springtime. It is the message of Hanukkah that whenever our spirit becomes as dark as the winter night,

we need not despair. If we can be a little patient, then God will find a way to help brighten our lives. If we open our eyes we can see

that God's continuing miracles will put light and warmth back into our souls.

There is only one prayer added to the daily liturgy for Hanukkah that, in its entirety, is unique to that festival. The Al Hanisim is a

prayer of Thanksgiving to God not only for all the miracles performed for our ancestors, but also for those miracles that God does for us

today. It is a beautiful example of how God's assistance can help us stand up against overwhelming odds. It is a recognition that our God

will somehow come to our aid, even in the darkest of times. If you like, say the prayer after you light your Hanukkiah. I trust you will

find it appropriate.

(We thank YOU) ... for the miracles,

for the redemption,

for the mighty deeds,

for the saving acts

and for the battles that YOU did for our ancestors in their day

( and for us) at this season.

In the days of Matityahu ben Yochanan, the Hasmonean High Priest, and his sons,

When the evil Greek empire stood against YOUR people Israel,

compelling them to ignore YOUR Torah and to transgress YOUR laws,

Then did YOU, with YOUR great compassion, stand with them in their time of trouble.

YOU came to their defense.

YOU judged their oppressors.

and YOU exacted retribution by delivering

the mighty into the hands of the weak.

the many into the hands of the few.

the impure into the hands of the clean.

the evildoers into the hands of the righteous.

and the arrogant into the hands of those dedicated to YOUR Torah.

By YOUR deeds YOU made YOUR name great and holy throughout YOUR world,

By saving YOUR people Israel with a redemption that has lasted to this day.

Then YOUR children came into YOUR Temple. They cleansed it. They purified it. They kindled lights in YOUR sacred

courtyards.

They designated these eight days of Hanukkah to give thanks to YOU

and to praise YOUR great name.

Another secular year is coming to an end and once again, through the hard work and generosi-ty of the CBENT women, we have made major contributions to the synagogue, Israel and the Broomall community. Our knitters are the BEST!! They have made dozens of hats, scarves, and blankets to give to the women in both Israel and the Media Domestic Abuse Shelters. Many thanks to our friend, Pearl Elias, for dropping off items at the Bat Melach shelter in Israel. Please join us on December 12, at 1:00 pm in the T.I. room when the CBENT knitters and Sis-terhood members will donate blankets, hats, scarves and socks for women and their children to the Media Shelter. Feel free to add any new/unused items including diapers and winter items to our donation. Our No Place for Hate Shabbat was well attended by students and adults to learn and brain-storm many different ideas that we can do to protect ourselves from bullying. The students took an active part in the service with songs and aliyiot at the Torah reading. The visit to the RBG exhibit was a success. Many of us saw pictures and other documents that made Ruth Bader Ginsburg the brilliant mind and asset she is to our country. Fern Clark was interviewing RBG to advise her of the law. Happy Hanukkah as we are approaching the joyous festival of lights. Men's Club keeps the light burning all year long not just in December. We had a wonderful program with 5th district Congresswomen Mary Gay Scanlon on Sunday November 24. Congresswomen Scanlon discussed many issues that she is experiencing in Washington including but not limited to: immigration, healthcare, Israel, anti-semitism, gun con-trol and, of course the Impeachment process. She answered all questions with truth and mini-mal bias. She navigated well through our current divisive political environment maintaining re-spect and dignity. The event was well attended and we received very positive feedback. Thank you everyone for your early rsvp's, this was very helpful. Thank you to our volunteers that helped with set up and facilitation of the event: Arnie and Ina, Jill, Rich, Nancy, Rich, Rob, Da-vid and Laura and many others that pitched in.

Please support our annual Hanukkah raffle. This is an important fundraiser and a great oppor-tunity to win some fabulous prizes. Including $500 cash, Sixer tickets and more. Raffles have been mailed. You also can pick them up in the office or contact Arthur Pollin, [email protected]. Thank you for your support. Congratulations to Rich Gordon and his wife Sarah Wolf who were honored at our Trustee Shabbat on November 22

nd . Rich has done many things for our synagogue. As for Men's Club, Rich serves as our Treasurer and Ad Book chairman. This was a well deserved and very appropriate honor and we are all very proud and supportive of Rich. Please join us for "Cook For A Friend" on Wednesday, December 4, 6:45-8:45pm in the kitch-en. We are helping April and Helene feed the needy in our community. Please bring $5 dona-tion and come to assist them and to do a wonderful mitzvah.

Our next Men’s Club meeting will be held on Monday, December 2, 7:30 p.m.

Men's Club Shabbat is coming in January. The date and time will be posted shortly.

Happy Hanukkah!

You are reading these lines, as we’ve just entered a month of Kislev, a Jewish month that brings us

Hanukkah. Though Hanukkah is a minor holiday, it is one of the most popular. Lacking strict laws and

rules, associated with major Jewish Festivals, it is a sheer delight and awakens a little child that lives

inside all of us. So abandon for a while your worries and your diets, light your candles, fry your latkes

and sufganiyot, party with your loved ones, and don’t forget to join the fun your community has to offer!

Hanukkah is late this year, and some families might leave for a winter break before the holiday even

starts. However, Or Tamid guarantees to those of you who are staying back home, that our Latkes and

Bingo celebration Sunday morning, December 22 at CBENT will erase all cold weather blues you might

experience, and will be a glorious overture to the Festival of Lights that begins at sundown of that very

day. Todah Rabbah to the CBENT Board of Trustees for throwing this terrific party for us!

To save yourself the hassle and aggravation of trying to find perfect gifts to give on eight nights of

Hanukkah, you can shop alongside our students at our Bazaar on Sundays, December 15th at Or Shalom,

and December 22nd

at CBENT for a wide variety of budget –friendly presents for everyone, including pets.

If you already did your holiday shopping, you still can come and be one of the volunteers at the Bazaar.

And last but not least, as we bask in the light and warmth of Festival candles, let’s not forget of those less

fortunate and bring some chom (warmth) to those without a home. Don’t forget to bring warm clothing to

donate to a local homeless shelter.

Looking forward to celebrate with you and wishing you a Happy Hanukkah and a Happy New Year!
