Staffing Update

Tony Stokes is due to return to full time duty on Monday 19th June. It will be great to see Tony back at Balwyn North Primary School.

Primary Years Programme (PYP) News

I was proud of the endorsement of our achievement that was part of the North East Victoria Region (NEVR) Bulletin. This Bulletin was sent to all schools in our region and I received many congratulatory messages from colleagues and other DET schools.

Excerpt from NEVR Bulletin (31.05.2017):

Inner East News

We are pleased to share that Balwyn North Primary School has been officially authorized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, This has been the culmination of a three year journey and has included a commitment to and focus on:

Increasing the professional knowledge of the leadership and teaching teams

Implementing teaching and learning processes that support inquiry learning

Designing a Program of Inquiry, based upon real-world conceptual understandings that supports the delivery of the Victorian Curriculum

Supporting students to build skills, attitudes and deep understandings connected to their learning

Working in partnership with the school community to build a shared vision for their community of learners.

The benefits for the Balwyn North Primary School community have been evident through this process and are continually emerging. There has been increased learner agency for students, as they have become empowered to make critical decisions about their learning, initiating and driving actions that have a life well beyond the classroom. A shared language of learning for the school community has also supported enhanced communication and collective understandings. They have found that the transdisciplinary approach of the PYP also supports students to make connections between and beyond curriculum areas, as they exist in local and global contexts. As this journey continues, a focus on supporting students to develop key attitudes and attributes will encourage the growth of all students to reach their full potential. An on-going relationship with the IB will support the school to deliver their vision through the School Strategic and Annual Implementation Plans.

Congratulations to Balwyn North Primary School on this significant achievement.

Warm and Fuzzies at BNPS

Students at BNPS have been buzzing with excitement over the past week, with the arrival of some special friends in our school playground. Warm and Fuzzies have arrived! Warm and Fuzzies are furry little playthings (otherwise known as pom poms) that are given out to students that are making caring and principled choices in the playground. Classes collect their Warm and Fuzzies in a jar. These are counted at the end of the week, by our Student Wellbeing Leaders. The class with the most Warm and Fuzzies will win a special prize. This new initiative is an opportunity for our students to reflect upon the types of choices that help to make our school a warm and safe place for all students.

Chess

This week, 15 of our top Chess players competed in a hard fought tournament at Mont Albert Primary School. Against strong competition, our players were not daunted and everyone gave their very best effort. This was Ryan Nguyen’s first inter-school tournament and the first time that Harold Moon has represented our school. Our top players were Chess Captain, Callista Leong-La, James Deng, Sean Hawkins, Clare Zhu, Oliver Chen and Zhi Lin. Callista received the award for the best girl player in the tournament and all of our players received shiny silver medals, in recognition of their amazing 2nd place achievement. David Wang, Elizabeth Ngodinhson, Han-Wen Khaw, Julia Hawkins, Kovida De Silva, Lincoln Kwan and Ryan Ngo are also to be commended on their significant contribution to our team’s result.

This wonderful result gives more of our players the opportunity to represent BNPS in the State Finals, in October. Congratulations to this hard working group of chess players and our sincere thanks to Mrs Sarasi De Silva, Ms Carol Chang, Mr Mo Ngo and Mrs Helen Christo, who kindly drove the team to and from the tournament.

Leader’s Education Week Lesson Overview!

2 weeks ago, all the leaders created an activity to instruct or entertain the whole school! After their activities,

students were asked to reflect on their lesson using a sheet of emojis. After going through many of the emoji

sheets, we are glad to say the majority of students circled positive emojis such as , and .

Surprisingly many Year Two students circled for their emoji!

I wrote a song about a burrito. Actually, it was more of a rap.

From your School Captains,

Ryan, Michael, Catherine, and Emma
