A publication of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers

Fostering cinematography in Canada since 1957. The Canadian Society of Cinematographers was founded by a group of Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa cameramen. Since then over 800 cinematographers and persons in associated occupations have joined the organization.

The CSC provides tangible recognition of the common bonds that link film and digital professionals, from the aspiring student and camera assistant to the news veteran and senior director of photography.

We facilitate the dissemination and exchange of technical information and endeavor to advance the knowledge and status of our members within the industry. As an organization dedicated to furthering technical assistance, we maintain contact with non-partisan groups in our industry but have no political or union affiliation.

One Look. All SpeedsThe Cooke Look®

"I wanted to give El Clan a strong optical personality to help develop this tale of horror. We were telling a dark, true story that took place in the 1980s about a family of kidnappers and murderers whose crimes took place inside their own home while they went about their “normal” lives. Our images had to be strong in character, framing every shot to show the weirdness and contrast of these two worlds in the same house.

The choice of the Cooke Anamorphic/i lenses was perfect for generating the feeling of a strange place or situation because of the way they render perspec-tive. We did extensive testing of the Cooke Anamorphics and got the exact look that we wanted.

I also used split field diopters, started or finished a shot out of focus and even took the lens out of the camera while recording. I think it all helped build the optical personality.

I have used Cooke 5/i and S4/i lenses to shoot other films and commercials so I’m familiar with the look you get with Cookes—they’re sharp but not too crisp. I think this works very well with digital cinema cameras because you get to keep the cinematic feel working with an electronic image.

Cooke was the obvious choice for El Clan because we got the perspective without losing definition and we got the Cooke Look for our period film."

DJI introduces their new professional aerial filmmaking platform that teams the phenomenal Matrice 600 high-performance drone with the powerful Ronin-MX gimbal.

The Matrice 600 (M600) – designed to integrate with a host of powerful DJI technologies, including the Lightbridge 2 transmission system and A3 flight controller – is ready to fly out-of-the-box. And with a range of 5km and a maximum payload of 13 pounds, the M600 can fly many of the cameras used on sets worldwide, including the Arri Alexa Mini and RED Epic.

The lighter, stronger, more powerful Ronin-MX gimbal – specifically designed for aerial use – partners perfectly with the M600. Not only can the Ronin-MX tilt beyond straight down to 135˚, it can fully rotate allowing you a 360˚ unobstructed view thanks to the M600’s fully-retractable legs.

See the M600/Ronin-MX dream team – a quantum leap in aerial filmmaking – hovering at Vistek.
