OUTLETCITY METZINGENPREMIUM OUTLET SHOPPING

LIKE SHOPPING? LOVE OUTLETCITY!

Somehow, the best stories come from life

itself. Like the one of Metzingen, the home-

town of Hugo Boss to the south of Stuttgart

at the foot of the Swabian Alb. In the 1970s

the textile center of the gentlemen’s tailor was

located here in an old brick factory. Originally

a quiet and unassuming sales outlet for the

staff working for the gentlemen’s tailor, today

it pulses with life as an internationally ac-

claimed shopping destination.

MORE THAN 60 INTERNATIONAL

PERMIUM BRANDS

Since then, more than 60 international pre-

mium brands like Armani, Bally, Burberry,

Coach, Escada, Hugo Boss, Max Mara,

Michael Kors and Missoni present their

merchandise in mainly fagship outlets. The

innovative architectural style of the stores has

been adapted individually to the correspond-

ing image of the brands and offers the visitors

also a good merchandise availability. In addi-

tion, the products are reduced all year by

30 – 70 % compared to the former recom-

mended retail price – this makes shopper’s

heart futter.

UNIQUE INNER-CITY LOCATION

In Metzingen, outlet shopping does not take

place in the open countryside, but is seen

as a real inner-city shopping experience. A

picturesque historic town, numerous build-

ings which are listed for preservation and a

centuries-old tradition in viniculture – this is

what visitors will find there.

TOURISTIC MAGNET

Swabian hospitality, regional and high-quality

food, the biosphere reserve in a landscape

like right out of a picture postcard as well as

numerous touristic highlights in the region

make it possible for the visitors to round off

their shopping trip with a touristic program

which offers everything – except for boredom.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Exclusive events and monthly themes like

Luxury Denim, Autumn Cocooning or

Winterdays make your visit to OUTLETCITY

METZINGEN a unique experience all year

round.

AESOP OPENS IN STUTTGART

Cult beauty brand Aesop, having recently

opened a boutique in Berlin’s Mitte district,

now has a second German outpost, this

time in Stuttgart. Designed by Einszu33

in collaboration with Aesop’s own design

department, the store follows the theme

‘black but not dark’ and was inspired by

the works of French painter Pierre Soulages.

The central counter is crafted from Nero

Assoluto stone slabs and black granite, and

features a demonstration sink ftted with

stylish brass plumbing. With this as a focal

point, the store’s design uses a palette of soft

greys and of-whites, complementing Aesop’s

distinctive product labels. Visitors can browse

the complete range of skin, hair and body care

items, with trained consultants on hand to

make sure each purchase is perfectly suited

to individual needs. hl

STYLISH SCENTS

Mercedes-Benz might be known for its motoring talents, but the German company is proving equally skilled at creating fragrances. Its foray into scent reveals the same traits that make its cars so desirable – timeless style, superior quality and a design-led attitude – and builds on the brand’s background as the main sponsor of the Fashion Weeks in New York, Berlin and Beijing. The frst fragrance for men, which has been created in collaboration with master perfumer Olivier Cresp, is sophisticated and confdent. Fresh citrus top notes of Calabrian bergamot and Italian mandarin are combined with a warming blend of bourbon pepper, nutmeg, cedarwood and vetiver to produce a sharp, fresh scent that’s also dynamic and uplifting. Developed in collaboration with perfumer Michel Almairac, the frst fragrance for women is a fresh and fowery scent with many layers, the unusual combination of mimosa and violet complemented by hints of bergamot. irsDouglas, Königstrasse 28, 70173 Stuttgart, +49 (0)711 295835, douglas.de

BORN TO SHINE

It would be fair to say that Kim-Eva Wempe has jewellery in her blood. Born into the Wempe family, which owns one of Germany’s leading fne jewellery and watch companies, she grew up in a world of precious metals and beautiful stones. Driven by the desire to keep her family’s business fresh and modern, she introduced her own line of jewellery, By Kim. Ofering beautiful and luxurious pieces inspired by and created for powerful and sensual women, the By Kim line skilfully plays with shapes and materials to create jewellery with a contemporary elegance. This opulent cocktail ring is eye-catching and luxurious enough for even the most special of occasions, while the simple lines and unfussy aesthetic mean it can also be worn every day. Each piece of jewellery by Wempe is made to last and made to be loved, and the classic style of this diamond ring will transcend seasons and remain a favourite for years to come, making it the perfect gift for that special someone. hlWempe,Königstrasse 41, 70173 Stuttgart, +49 (0)711 223 8090, wempe.com

German tailor Felix W launched in the

city in 2008 and uses what it calls a ‘modular

matrix’ – where clients try on diferent

combinations of ready-made components until

everything fts – to create beautiful made-

to-measure businesswear. The process is

refreshingly straightforward; customers work

with Felix W’s specialist team of style advisers

to create their ideal shirt (or, indeed, suit) from

the extensive range of high-quality fabrics

collar, cufs and perhaps a discreet monogram.

Skilled makers at the Heilbronner Strasse

workshop then use the information to create

the fnished garment, all in record time.

Another of Stuttgart’s bespoke havens is

Buckles and Belts on Calwer Strasse. The store

is committed to changing the way customers

view one of the most overlooked accessories,

the humble belt. In the store, visitors will fnd

a vast array of the fnest Italian leather belt

straps in a variety of colours and hides, ready

to be matched to their chosen buckle – perhaps

a bold embossed brass plate or a simple,

understated silver box frame.

When it comes to fnding frst-class footwear,

one of the best places to go is Ludwig Reiter.

Its Stuttgart store, also on Calwer Strasse,

is flled with beautiful handmade shoes, all

crafted by the brand’s own team of highly

skilled shoemakers. The brand still adheres

to the exacting manufacturing principles laid

down by its eponymous founder in 1885; all

Ludwig Reiter shoes follow between 200 and

300 individual production processes, from

stencilling the leather and stitching the cuts

together to joining the upper to the sole and

leather fnishing.

What sets Ludwig Reiter apart from other

shoemakers is its welting process, whereby

the leather upper and the inner sole are sewn

together using a continuous leather strip –

as time has passed.

While expertly cut shirts, well-chosen

accessories and handmade shoes are all

business outft is undoubtedly the suit, and

just to the south of Stuttgart is the town where

one of the most prominent German tailors was

founded. Hugo Boss began creating suits in

Metzingen almost a century ago, and today his

eponymous label is one of the most successful

German designer brands in the world.

For autumn/winter 2014/15, the brand’s

Boss label has taken its inspiration from

Scandinavian minimalism, resulting in a ready-

to-wear collection focused on precision and

contemporary design. Pieces include double-

breasted boxy jackets, graphite grey pinstripe

suits and workwear-inspired button-down

shirts alongside cufed slim-cut trousers, all

in a polar-inspired palette of ocean blues and

Arctic greys.

Hugo Boss’s seasonal collections are at

the forefront of German fashion. For those

wanting something more individual, however,

there’s also the brand’s made-to-measure

service. This ofers customers the opportunity

to experience the fusion of classic artisanship

and cutting-edge technology that goes into

a bespoke suit handmade by the label’s master

tailors at its store on Stuttgart’s Königstrasse.

With an array of the fnest fabrics, linings

and buttons in diferent colours to choose from,

clients will fnd that assembling their very

own Boss made-to-measure suit is a genuine

creative endeavour, resulting in a fnal product

that is the perfect refection of its owner.

The customer’s signature is even embroidered

inside the jacket and waistband – the ultimate

testimony of the suit’s uniqueness.

What’s evident is that Stuttgart ofers busy

executives a wealth of high-quality, luxury and

bespoke clothing options that combine German

craftsmanship and hi-tech know-how, making

the city the perfect place to sharpen up your

boardroom – and in-fight – style

Fashion and functionality are sometimes

mutually exclusive: in many cases, they can

be polar opposites. However, when it comes

to design that is practical as well as beautiful,

the Germans are experts. Buying German has

been a priority for many car lovers for decades,

with Porsche being the go-to sports model for

motor enthusiasts the world over.

More recently, Porsche’s line of clothing

and accessories has brought fashionable

consumers around to the idea of buying

German. The collection was introduced in

1972 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the

founder of the renowned car. Relaunched in

2003 as Porsche Design, the collection now

included under the umbrella, such as a

range of high-end stainless steel BlackBerry

smartphones: the most recent, the P’9982,

is available in an array of fnishing options,

including a body which is backed with Italian

leather or with crocodile leather.

In 2010 Porsche Design launched its

selection of engineered leather products,

created through high-quality craftsmanship.

The collection has featured a leather jacket

made from nappa lambskin, which was

so exclusive it was limited to 200 pieces

worldwide. Other items include a duvet jacket

in super-soft kidskin suede and the Tec Flex

leather jacket, which incorporates covered

zip-pockets and loops for headphone cables.

Speaking about why the engineered

leather range stands out, Dr Juergen Gessler,

Porsche Design’s CEO, says, ‘It creates an

uncompromising link between functionality

and aesthetics and fts seamlessly into our

product portfolio. Our concept remains

unchanged: we don’t follow trends, we set

our own accents. The result is that our

version of casual chic makes our fashion

collections unique.’

Perhaps the best example of the brand’s

seamless combination of functionality and

fashion is its signature handbag, the TwinBag.

Created using the most exclusive leathers

and expertly crafted by artisans in Florence,

the TwinBag’s main distinguishing feature

is its innovative carrying concept – adjustable

Each bag is produced from a single piece

of leather, which is then expertly stitched by

hand. The lining is made from the softest

Alcantara material and the metal fttings,

including chrome, silver, white gold and rose

procedures. This is the perfect combination

of Italian craftsmanship and German design.

The success of the TwinBag resulted in

a collaboration with the Berlin-based painter

Thierry Noir, who took the TwinBag and

incorporated his own signature handpainted

‘heart faces’ to create a special edition which

was presented at the 2013 Art Basel Miami

Beach, before being made available to purchase

from a handful of Porsche Design stores

around the world.

It’s clear that Porsche Design still follows the principles set by its founder ... where the form is not only functional, and perhaps obvious, but also beautiful

perception of the world and the only logical

conclusion is the combination of minimalist

design and functionality,’ says Porsche Design’s

creative director Thomas Steinbrueck.

‘Therefore, we have created a look that works

in harmony with this new living environment.

Structured but not constructed. Casual and

formal at the same time. In particular, we

have used the latest techniques of materials

and yet forward-looking cuts.’

Four decades after its creation, it’s clear

that Porsche Design still follows the principles

set by its founder, who maintained that ‘if

you analyse the function of an object, its form

often becomes obvious’. In the case of Porsche

Design, the form is not only functional, and

The maultasche, or flled pasta square,

is Stuttgart’s speciality. It is available

in almost every wine tavern in town.

Historically, maultaschen have been

forbidden food within a pasta dough.

See

Stuttgart’s Schlossplatz (palace square)

is the heart of the city and is a must-see

for everyone. The square is surrounded

by an array of attractions, including the

old and new palaces, the Kunstmuseum

Stuttgart (Stuttgart museum of art) and

Königstrasse, the city’s most prestigious

shopping street.

Do

Stuttgart is the only city in the world with

two automobile museums: the Mercedes-

Benz Museum documents the entire history

of the automobile, from its invention in 1886

to present day. At the Porsche Museum

visitors can follow the development of this

30: Dressed To Impress

Page 57: SHOP Stuttgart AW14

57

Hugo Boss

36: In Focus: Porsche Design

Porsche Design

Page 59: SHOP Stuttgart AW14

59

Hamish Monk

(Ferdinand Alexander Porsche)

Tec Flex

(Juergen

Gessler)

Alcantara
