Dairy Farmers for All Your Hard Work and DedicationDairy Farmers for All Your THANK YOU
June Dairy Month, an annual tradition developed to celebrate the dairy industry and its many contributions to our society, originated in 1937. During its fi rst two years, 1937 and
1938, it was called National Milk Month and ran from June 10 to July 10.
"June Dairy Month" became the offi cial title of the promotion in 1939 and focused on greater use of dairy products. Campaign material, prepared by NDC, was offered to
producers, processors and dairy product distributors. June Dairy Month was initially funded by a one cent per pound butterfat assessment in June.

A healthy diet can improve quality of life and reduce a person's risk of developing disease or other negative health conditions. For example, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can boost the immune system and promote cardiovascular health, lowering your risk of heart disease in the process. While the benefi ts of including fruits and vegetables in your diet are widely known, the medical benefi ts of dairy are often overlooked. The following are a handful of ways that dairy products like low-fat milk, cottage cheese and yogurt can make a nutritious and benefi cial addition to your diet.
* Dairy packs a protein- and calcium-laden punch. One cup of nonfat yogurt can provide as much as one-third of your daily recommended calcium intake and nearly 20 percent of your daily recommended protein intake. Though dairy products like ice cream don't pack the same nutritious punch as yogurt, healthier fare like reduced-fat cheese and skim milk can go a long way toward meeting your daily intake of protein and calcium.
* Dairy is a great source of vitamin D. In addition to providing suffi cient calcium and protein, dairy also helps men, women and children boost their vitamin D. That's especially important in the winter months when people tend to get less exposure to the sun. Exposure to the sun is a natural way to boost your vitamin D, but the shorter days and colder weather of winter can make it hard to get suffi cient vitamin D during that time of year. Dairy products like low-fat milk can boost your vitamin D, which can improve your bone health and, according to recent research, might help reduce your cancer risk.
* Dairy may help lower your blood pressure. Men and women with high blood pressure might benefi t from including more dairy in their diets. In a study of 5,000 adults, Spanish researchers found that those who reported consuming the most low-fat dairy products were more than 50 percent less likely to develop high blood pressure than those who consumed less low-fat dairy. Though researchers are not certain as to the reason behind low-fat dairy products' impact on blood pressure, some theorize that their calcium and protein content are likely behind the benefi t.
* Dairy benefi ts your bones. Dairy has long been known to improve bone density. But it's not just seniors who benefi t from the bone-strengthening impact of dairy. Youngsters who consume dairy can also expect an increase in bone mass, which can make them less susceptible to injuries like broken bones. Seniors who consume dairy to improve their bone density should know that a recent study from researchers at the Institute for Aging Research found that not all dairy products are equal when it comes to improving bone density. While milk and yogurt were linked to higher bone mineral density, dairy products like cream and ice cream contain less protein, calcium and vitamin D and more fat and sugar than yogurt and milk, and these products may actually be associated with lower bone mineral density.
Though there are many ways men and women can improve their overall health, it's important to consider the nutritional value of dairy when making any alterations to your diet.

Looking Twice May Save a Life!
About half of all motorcycle crashes involve a collision with another vehicle. In many crashes, the driver never saw the motorcyclist or didnt see the rider until it was too late. There are many reasons why other drivers do not see motorcyclists. Most car drivers arent familiar with motorcycles and dont look for them in traffi c. Motorcycle riders often wear leathers which are usually dark in color and can easily blend into the background. Motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles, so they are more diffi cult to spot in traffi c and can be hidden by other vehicles or roadside features. Daytime headlight use does not give motorcycle riders much of an advantage anymore, due to the widespread use of daytime running lights on cars. The smaller size and single headlight on the motorcycle make it more diffi cult for other drivers to judge a riders speed and distance.
The Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center encourages everyone drivers and motorcyclists to practice these techniques to make motorcycling safer for everyone: When turning left: Most crashes between vehicles and motorcycles involve turning left at an intersection. If crossing traffi c or turning left, look twice for motorcycles before turning. Blind spots: Motorcycles are easily hidden in traffi c. Always take a second look over your shoulder dont rely solely on your mirrors. Weather: Rain and sun glare can make a motorcycle invisible. Take an extra moment to make sure the way is clear. Signals: Use turn signals. This allows the rider to anticipate traffi c fl ow and fi nd a safe lane position. Larger vehicles: Cars and trucks can conceal a motorcycle traveling behind it. Take an extra moment after a larger vehicle passes before beginning a turn Eye contact: Motorcyclists make eye contact often to feel confi dent that other drivers see them. Give a nod back to acknowledge them. Distance: Motorcyclists prefer to use a large space cushion, allowing them more time to react. Do not cut in front of a motorcycle and eliminate the safe following distance. Signals: Most motorcycle turn signals do not cancel automatically. If a cycle is coming, and the signal is fl ashing, wait a moment for the cycle to pass.
