Beautiful BloomsWith the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival in full swing this April, see if you can spot the following cultivars on Vancouver’s streets:> afterglow: This American hybrid cherry is
characterized by bright-pink flowers, horizontally spreading branches and buds and branches that are more resistant to freezing damage.
> pandora: This English hybrid has a neat crown of upright branches and smallish, soft-pink flowers composed of five narrow, notched petals, suffused deeper pink at the tips. The flowers open flat, showing gaps between the petals.
> pink perfection: An increasingly uncommon cherry in Vancouver with a small, spreading, umbrella-shaped crown and large, luxurious two-toned flowers – pink with white inner petals.
> snow goose: Blooms in early April with pure-white flowers backed by bright green calyces.> Ukon: With flowers of an unusual yellowish colour, the name of this cultivar alludes to the fact
that turmeric (“ukon” in Japanese) stains whatever it touches yellow.
travellers’ tips
Umbrella Etiquette With springtime showers an inevitability, here are a few handy wet-weather pointers:> Choose an umbrella that’s large enough to keep
you dry but not so big that others can’t move past you easily.
> Look both ways before you open your umbrella so that nobody gets poked. Be mindful of people standing or walking nearby.
> Sharing an umbrella? The taller person holds it.> When you see others approaching, hold your
umbrella higher or tilt it to avoid a collision. > Shake off and close your umbrella before entering a building. Look for an umbrella stand or ask
where to set your brolly down.> Don’t give your umbrella its own seat on public transit. Stand it on the floor by your feet, ensuring
it’s closed tightly and doesn’t create a tripping hazard.> Carry your closed umbrella vertically, pointy end down. Don’t tuck it under your arm with the end
sticking out.
sushi 101Some of the items you’ll likely find on the menus of Vancouver’s many sushi restaurants:> edamame: Steamed or boiled soybeans served with salt.> Make-sushi: Sushi rolls that include various fillings, usually wrapped in seaweed.> nigiri-suhi: Hand-formed sushi made with rice and fresh seafood.> sake: An alcoholic beverage of Japanese origin made
from fermented rice.> sashimi: Very fresh raw meat or fish sliced into thin pieces.> tempura: Seafood or vegetables that have been battered
and deep-fried.> Wasabi: A condiment for sushi with a horseradish-like flavour.

getting around
By Water There are many ways to explore Vancouver by water – all year long! The SeaBus is a passenger-only, wheelchair-accessible ferry that connects downtown Vancouver to the North Shore via Burrard Inlet. Planning an outing to Granville Island? Board the False Creek Aquabus from one of several docks along the downtown seawall. False Creek Ferries
operate year-round between Granville Island and English Bay, with seasonal service between the Maritime Museum, Vancouver Museum, Pacific Space Centre, Stamps Landing and Science World. > seaBus: tripplanning.

By skytrain The City of Vancouver and surrounding parts of the Lower Mainland are linked by a completely automated (no drivers required!) light rapid-transit system called SkyTrain. Visitors love the Canada Line in particular because it provides a super-fast rapid rail link between downtown Vancouver and the Vancouver International Airport in Richmond. 604.953.3333 | translink.ca
no vehicle? no problem! Vancouver provides many public transit options – plus fun alternatives to driving altogether – to help locals and visitors alike get around!
By taxi CabNeed to get from point A to point B? With at least four cab companies operating throughout the city, hailing a taxi in Vancouver is always an option. By seawallWith its mild, Pacific climate, one of the best ways to see Vancouver any time of year is by using your own two feet! Rent a bike from one of many cycling shops around the city or lace up your sneakers and hit the seawall – a stunning, 22-kilometre (13.5-mile) concrete path that hugs Vancouver’s scenic waterfront. The seawall is divided into two clearly marked sections: one for walkers and joggers (closest to the water) and one for cyclists and inline skaters (inside path). Be sure to follow the signs to make sure you use the seawall safely, especially on weekends when it sees the most foot and pedal traffic. vancouver.ca/parks-recreation-culture/seawall.aspx image: tourism vancouver / ctc
By tour operator Let an expert show you around! Vancouver tour operators know this city like the back of their hand – and are more than happy to do the driving for you, while pointing out all of the most notable and spectacular sites and sights.> Big Bus: 604.451.1600 | bigbus.ca> vancouver trolley company:

Three years in the making, the new below-ground wing, accessed by escalator at the shopping mall’s new entrance at the corner of Robson and Granville streets, showcases offerings from Disney, Microsoft, Rockport and Abercrombie & Fitch. S pring is one of the best times to visit Vancouver. With the weather warming up and the cherry trees in full bloom, you’ll want to spend many of your
moments getting outdoors and being active.Whale Watching For a truly exhilarating excursion, whale watching with a local tour provider can’t be beat! Getting close enough to these majestic creatures often starts in the historic fishing village of Steveston (in Richmond) or from downtown Vancouver. Within minutes of either point of departure, you’ll find yourself exploring the Strait of Georgia, Fraser River Delta and Gulf Islands, home to these mighty mammals. You’ll also get a chance
to spot harbour seals, sea lions, porpoises and a variety of marine wildlife that call these coastal waters home – don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime experience! photo: tourism richmond

Vancouver boasts three outstanding municipal courses – Fraserview, McCleery and Langara – located within a reasonable distance of the downtown core. Green fees are moderate and all three golf courses have been recognized for high environmental standards. photo: University golf club
Beautiful Beaches Vancouver has a beach for you, no matter what season it may be! Though the water may be too chilly for swimming in spring, you can still enjoy a stroll along the sand or even join an impromptu volleyball game. Some of the most spectacular sunsets can be viewed from Vancouver’s sprawling shorelines – and, if you’ve got your four-legged friend with you, many beaches offer dog-friendly areas and ample parking. vancouver.ca/parks/rec/beaches

And for a list of over 120 Belgian and craft beers, visit one of BierCraft Restaurants’ three locations, where knowledgeable staff will guide you through your choices. Fort langleyRising from the mist of the Fraser River, the palisades of Fort Langley stand tall. Inside the walls, rough-hewn timber buildings recreate the rugged 1800s. See where Hudson’s Bay Company fur traders mingled with California gold prospectors and hear First Nations interpreters tell century-old tales. Feel the blast of the musket fire, pan for gold dust and dress up to play a historic trading boss. fortlangley.com

While migratory birds steal the show from October to April, a variety of water-fowl and other species call Delta home in the summer months. Start your bird tour at Boundary Bay Regional Park, navigating the boardwalks and trails cutting through the marshland and tall grasses. Head over to the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary and take a tour through acres
of protected habitat, then finish up the day at the Delta Nature Reserve at Burns Bog for more sightings. tourismdelta.com image: stephen chung
