On our Canterburycampus you have accessto all of the University’sresources, with everythingyou need to enjoy studentlife and help you in yourstudies.

Campus life is ideal for studentsfrom overseas as it provides aself-contained environment witheverything in one place. Theresult is a lively and memorableexperience. You have access toall the University resources andare only ever a few minutes awayfrom your classes. In your sparetime, you can enjoy the campuscinema, theatre and a range ofbars and restaurants. The campushas a sports centre, shops, a bankand cash machines, and an award-winning student nightclub. The citycentre is only a 25-minute walkaway and there’s a frequent busservice between campus andthe city centre. AccommodationStudents have the option of livingin campus accommodation, whichis no more than a few minutes’walk from all the central facilities.You share a student apartment orhouse, or live in college, giving youthe opportunity to make new friendsfrom around the world.

All students, no matter wherethey live, belong to one of Kent’scolleges. Each has its own living,

JUNIOR YEAR ABROAD (JYA)ENGLISH PLUS

JYA English PLUS hasbeen designed to meetthe needs of studentswhose first languageis not English. It offersa combination of languagetraining, study skills andthe opportunity to studyacademic modules fromacross the University.

JYA English PLUS is offered as afull-year programme (April to April)or a part-year programme (eightmonths from April to December).It is made up of the followingelements.

1 British and Academic CultureAn optional two-week courseto help you become accustomedto your new study and learningenvironment.

2 Pre-sessional studiesThis focuses on developing yourEnglish language and study skillsso that you can meet the levelof proficiency required to makethe most of your academic studies.You learn how to navigate the UK

university and assessment system,while improving your Englishlanguage skills. You have theopportunity to join our summersocial programme, run by ourstudent ambassadors. It includestrips to local places of interest,weekly social evenings, karaokeand much more. You can also joinKent Sport and have access to allof the University’s sporting facilities.

At the end of this course, you areassessed on your language skills.This helps to determine whichmodules you should follow inthe academic term.

Kent has exchangeagreements with manyuniversities around theworld and can makesimilar arrangementswith other reputableuniversities.

If you come to Kent under anexchange agreement, you are an‘exchange student’ and pay tuitionfees to your home university. Inorder to gain credits for your yearabroad, your university needs toapprove the details of your yearat Kent, including the modulesyou have chosen.

It is your responsibility to liaisewith your home institution aboutthe transfer of the academic creditsyou gain at Kent. Please contactyour university’s study abroadoffice for details.

General academicrequirementsFor entry on to a short-termprogramme we normally requirea grade point average (GPA)of 3.0 or above (out of 4.0) orits equivalent. However, eachapplication is considered onan individual basis.

English languagerequirementsIf you are applying from overseas,you must provide satisfactoryevidence of your proficiencyin written and spoken Englishto show that you can take fulladvantage of the teachingwe offer. To find out more, visitwww.kent.ac.uk/ems/eng-lang-reqs

Fees and living costsIf Kent has an exchange agreementwith your home university (see p16),you can continue to pay your tuitionfees to your home university.

If Kent does not have an exchangeagreement with your university,you can apply as a non-exchangestudent and pay tuition feesdirectly to Kent.

HOW TO APPLY

If your home universityhas an exchangeagreement with theUniversity of Kent, pleaseliaise directly with itsstudy abroad officewhen you apply.

If your university does not currentlyhave an agreement with Kent, weconsider direct applications forshort-term study. Please bear inmind it is your responsibility to liaisewith your home institution abouttransferring credits for your studyat Kent.

Direct applicationsIf you wish to apply directly, pleasesubmit an online application atwww.kent.ac.uk/courses/short-term/apply

As part of your application youneed to include the followingdocuments.

1 A copy of your passportThis is mandatory; you will notbe able to submit your applicationwithout this.

2 A provisional moduleregistration form (not requiredfor JYA English PLUS applicants)You can download this form fromour website at: www.kent.ac.uk/courses/short-term/apply• Please ensure that you have

chosen modules accordingto the specification of yourparticular programme(see www.kent.ac.uk/courses/modules).

• On your provisional module form,fill in your preferred modules,and some alternatives (in caseyour first choices are notavailable).

• If you wish to transfer academiccredits, please check that yourchosen modules will be acceptedby your home university.

3 Proof of academicachievementsYou need to provide, in English,full, certified transcripts of yourcurrent programme of studyand your results to date fromyour home institution.

4 Academic referenceYou need to include a report,in English, from a teacher whois familiar with your academic workat your present university or college.

Visa and immigrationThe need to obtain entry permissionbefore arriving in the UK isdetermined by your nationality.Please ensure that you allowenough time to make your visaapplication. For more details, seewww.gov.uk/tier-4-general-visa

If you plan to study in the UK forless than six months and do notintend to work, then, dependingon your nationality, you can enterthe UK on a short-term studyvisa. However, please note thatyou cannot switch from a short-term study visa to a Tier 4 Visawhile in the UK.
