5th Annual Doctor Kaito Summer Judo Tournament By
Bryan Stanley
To start with, thank you to all the volunteers who took time on Sunday, August
24, 2014, to make sure that the 5th Annual Doctor Kaito Summer Judo Tournament
was a success. Without you donating your time, the annual judo tournament would
not be what it has become.
Next, thank you to Sensei Randy Carrasco for his vision and dedication to this an-
nual effort. It was his baby from the start and he has done everything humanly possi-
ble to ensure its success. If you have not been to the tournament, mark your calen-
dar next year and go. Sensei Carrasco is a class act who puts on an A+ contest.
More than forty competitors jammed the two mats, and randoried each other into
oblivion. The pins out numbered the throws, the fun abounded, and no one got hurt.
It was a good time for all.
-
It was a first come, first served clinic in the heart of Boulder City. The first people to show up, got to learn Po-
lice arts, if you were late, and there was not any more room, you got to go home, or go gamble. At any rate the
yudansha who showed up got an eye full of jujitsu at its finest. Here are a few pictures so you can see what you
missed.
Words of Wisdom
“The start is what stops most people.” - Don Shula
“Often the difference between a successful person and a failure is not one has better abil-
ities or ideas, but the courage that one has to bet on one’s ideas, to take a calculated risk
– and to act.” - Maxwell Maltz
“It isn’t what you have, or who you are, or where you are, or what you are doing that
makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about.” - Dale Carnegie

Shoshin Ryu Yudanshakai The History of Shoshin
Ryu, Vol. 1
The History of Shoshin Ryu is now available
on Amazon.com and on the OutskirtsPress
websites. It took nine months to write and
was produced through countless interviews
with Professors Mike Chubb, Bill Fischer,
Len Riley, Jon Jacques, Kevin Dalrymple,
Steve McMillan, Roger Medlen, and a host of
others. For some it will be a trip down
memory lane, for others it will be an essen-
tial part of understanding the roots of
Shoshin Ryu.

I Hate it when this Happens
Well, your able minded
Newsletter Editor made a mis-
take. I know, I know...but please,
there must be some way I can
regain your trust.
In the last newsletter I re-
ferred to JOE MEDLEN as John
Medlen. JOE MEDLEN was rec-
ognized as a SHICHIDAN by
Shoshin Ryu not John Medlen.
John is a fine martial artist of his
own account, and does not need
to ride his older brother’s shirt-
tails.
Sorry for the error. I would
like to say it will not happen
again, but it will.
