Sala Dogana Hands-On Transformation

Sala Dogana is a mutable place, open to all the different forms of art, always careful towards new

creative ideas.

A year after the start of the project, the Municipality of Genoa and Genoa Palazzo Ducale

Foundation for Culture, in collaboration with GAI - Associazione Circuito Giovani Artisti Italiani e

BJCEM - Association Internationale pour la Biennale des Jeunes Créateurs de l'Europe et de la

Méditerranée, invite young artists to design a site-specific intervention able to re-interpret and

enhance its special spaces, creating an intimate dialogue between architecture and contemporary

languages: tactile, visual and acoustic sensations able to transform the perception of space and

places.

A temporary installation, an invasive action of transformation acting transversally on different

levels of communication, between inside and outside, city and closed space, art and society,

contemplation and participation.

A call to live creativity as a tool for change, free, constructive and collective, able to involve and

attract the attention of a larger public.

RULES

Article 1 – Participation

Artists may participate individually or in groups, with ages between 18 and 35 years. Each artist or

group is allowed to participate in one project, unpublished and never realized before.

Article 2 – Theme

The competition involves the design of a site-specific installation that enhances and re-interpret

the space of Sala Dogana, developing physical paths capable of stimulating the participation and

interaction between audience and artwork.

An intervention aimed at changing the approach to the site, linking it visually, physically and

conceptually to the opposite square.

The work will be made with total freedom of concept, technique and materials, also using new

technologies, sound and / or lights.

Article 3 - Formats and requirements of the works

Artworks must be made with suitable materials depending on the location inside and outside,

non-perishable and not harmful to people. The size and weight should be compatible with an easy

positioning and anchoring.

Article 4 - Documentation Supplied

- Planimetry of Sala Dogana;

- Photographs of space and list of material supplied;

- Brief description and mission of Sala Dogana.

Article 5 - Form and requirements for processed

The artists must send in a sealed envelope as described in Art. 6, paper and photographic material

and a DVD containing:

- curriculum vitae of no more than a folder (60 characters per line for 30 lines) in digital format

(pdf), which specifies the training and main exposures (for groups will be required curriculum for

each team and for each single component of the team);

- graphic work with a perspective view of the work in context or images of the model in various

poses (front, rear and side) and in jpg with a resolution of 300 dpi, images and DVDs must bear a

label on the back filled with name, surname and contacts of the author;

- a technical description of the proposed project and the relationship with the context that the

work should clarify to the jury, in a simple and comprehensive way, how the work will be carried

out, the materials used, location, size, mode of construction and all that can help to better

understand the proposal;

- the application form completed entirely.

Article 6 - Shipping and maturity

The projects, each accompanied by a copy of the application form filled out and signed, may be

sent by registered mail or courier, prepaid, and must be sent to:

The envelope should be marked with: “SHOT. Sala Dogana Hands-On Transformation”.

The documents may also be submitted directly to the General Archive site in Piazza Dante 10, I°

floor with the following schedule:

Monday and Thursday 8.30-12.30 and 14.00-16.30

Tuesday and Wednesday 8.30-16.30

Friday 8.30-14.00

In case of sending by registered mail, shall be deemed submitted in due time the papers submitted

by 16:30 pm Monday, July 18, 2011, in which case, the date and time of shipment is certified by

the stamp of the post office.

We will not however be taken into account submissions received by mail over the fourth working

day after expiry of the deadline.

The promoters and organizers of the competition can not in any way be held responsible for

delays or non delivery of the works.

Article 7 - Return of the papers. Refunds

The materials will not be returned. There is no reimbursement of expenses incurred in

participating in the contest.

Article 8 - Exclusion

Will not be allowed in the contest of artists who do not abide by the wishes of Articles 1, 2, 3, 4.

Article 9 - Jury

The Sala Dogana Commission, established for the selection of projects and ideas of young

creatives to be carried out in the Sala Dogana, the new space at Palazzo Ducale for the promotion

of young art, will select a work among all those admitted to the competition.

The jury's decision is final.

Article 10 - Awards

The winner will receive an amount equal to 1,500 euros, without deduction of withholding tax, as

a support for the construction and fitting.

Article 11 - Transport and Exhibition of selected works Each artist will have to arrange the transportation and return with any insurance, the setting up

and dismantling, and will have to bear the costs.

The organization will provide insurance coverage, only for the storage of the artwork inside the

Sala Dogana.

The installation will be inaugurated on September 9, 2011 and will remain until September 25,

2011. The preparation must be made within and not later than the 18:00 of 8 September 2011.

The organization offers the opportunity to build or assemble the work selected, in part or totally,

within the Sala Dogana for a period to be agreed.

The artists living outside Genoa that have opted for this solution will be granted with

accommodation and kitchen use (in case of group, no more than three people) at the Artists'

Quarter / residences of the Ghetto for the duration of a week (2/9/11 to 9/9/11).

Article 12 - No award

The jury may choose not to select any work.

Article 13 - Terms of use

The candidates, while remaining lawful owners of all rights to the works presented in competition,

recognize to the organization the right to use them for any initiative for the promotion and

communication of the competition, the exhibition and Sala Dogana, and the not exclusive right to

exhibit and publish them, even in the form of poster, in promotional material or other

manifestation of the Sala Dogana, with clear evidence of the author in the citation.

Moreover, the material selected may be used by the organization, always pointing out the names

of authors, in publications, exhibitions, banners, posters, etc., on the Internet, to promote

competition and cultural activities of Palazzo Ducale.

Article 14 - Responsibility

The Organization accepts no responsibility for any theft, fire or damage of any sort that may occur

to the transaction in Piazza Matteotti during the exposure period.

Article 15 - Warranties. Indemnification

The authors guarantee that the creative material submitted in the contest is original, fully

available and does not give rise to any third party claims based on misleading advertising,

plagiarism, imitation or counterfeit, knowing the damage that could result, in the case of their

false statements, to the promoters of the competition following the publication of their work, the

exhibition and for all additional uses for art. 13. The competitors also raise the contest organizers

from any claims made by third parties regarding the use of their works, as well as any claim for any

breach of existing legislation on intellectual property and copyright, of the authors assume

responsibility as of now.

Article 16 - Privacy

The personal data communicated to the organization of the competition are collected only to the

for the performance of duties provided by law, and consent is required for participation in the

contest.

The artists allow the publication of the data provided in the entry. The artist shall retain the

rights conferred by the Code of Privacy (Legislative Decree 196 of 30.06.2003).

Article 17 – Disputes

Entrants agree to accept all articles of this announcement.

The relationships between the participating artists and promoters of the competition are

governed by Italian law. For any dispute arising over the interpretation of these rules or the

conduct of the competition, the Court of Genoa will be competent.

Pursuant to and the effects of. 8 of L. August 7, 1990, No 241, as amended and supplemented, is

advised that the Head of the proceedings relating to this notice is Dr. Guido Gandino, Director of

Enhancement, Institution Cultural Heritage, Parks and Villas, University Relations and Research.
