PI’s are required to register with ORCID prior to beginning their application, however other key personnel are not.

While entering other investigators, the system will alert the PI as to who is already registered with ORCID and who will need to register before AS will review their application.

ORCID is not required for Consultants, which is recognized by the system.

Once a PI is ready to submit, they are once again alerted that their key personnel who have not yet linked their AS and ORCID accounts will receive instructions as to how to do so.

A similar notification is presented to the organization’s grants official once the application is formally submitted by the institution.

Subject: Autism Speaks/ORCID Identifier - Immediate Attention Requested [TESTING - staging]

Dear Tom Hopkins,

You have been named by Suzy Science as a Co-Investigator for their 2014 Trailblazer application entitled "ORCID Integration". Autism Speaks now requires all key personnel on their grant applications to register with ORCID to obtain a unique online identifier and to allow

Autism Speaks limited access to their ORCID account. This authorization permits Autism Speaks to update your funding record and to monitor your research progress via publications,

presentations, etc . Applications without ORCID accounts for all key personnel will not be reviewed. To read more about our partnership with ORCID, please visit our policy page. To learn more about ORCID, please visit their website.

To create or link your ORCID account, please access the Autism Speaks Science Grants System,

logging in with tom. Utilize "Forgot password" if necessary. On your profile page, please select the link to "Create/authorize your ORCID identifier now."

You will be taken to ORCID's log in page. For existing accountholders, simply log in with your ID/email account and password. For new users, enter the requested information to generate your

ORCID identifier. Upon selecting the "Sign in" or “Register” button, you will be asked to authorize Autism Speaks to read limited information from ORCID record.

We thank you for your attention to this matter and for your interest in Autism Speaks. If you have any questions about our ORCID policy or issues with the grants system, please do not

hesitate to contact me. Ed Clayton

The email to key personnel includes all pertinent information, including links to the AS Science Grants System and AS policy on ORCID integration, as well as explicit instructions as to how to register/link with ORCID.

Progress/Feedback

• Compliance

– 97 linked profiles in less than 2 months

– Have not reached out to current grantees

– Will include ORCID info when requesting progress/final/outcome reports

• Trailblazer and GI/Neurobehavior RFAs

– Only at LOI stage, but researchers registering w/ ORCID anyway

• Weatherstone Predoctoral Fellows

– Recent awardees whose applications were approved before ORCID integration went live

– Language/instructions included in award notice and grant agreement.

– Compliance is mediocre

– Lesson: Decision to require ORCID pre-review is validated

• Negative feedback from investigators

– None.

The Future

• Addition of ORCID public profiles to Grants Search results

• Biosketches derived/updated from ORCID profile

• Pre-populated progress/final reports

• Reporting review activity to ORCID

• Integration with other systems to track ROI

• Dependent on ORCID’s continued technical development

• Dependent on our investigators using/updating their profiles

• Dependent on our colleagues to adopt and require ORCID
