Welcome to KMS 2015-16! This is Year Five in our new school and it’s still a truly amazing place to be. We had a great start to the year since the weather has been awesome! The cross country team is enjoying the cool sunny conditions. Other sports teams aren’t complaining either as they travel to the various schools. The Cardinal Newspaper Club has many new members who have joined to share their ideas and talents with the KMS audience. As you read the stories and articles they have created, we hope you will get to know something about these wonderful young people!

I interviewed Ms.Butterfield, the KMS Chorus teacher. Here are some questions we asked her!

Can you name all the kids in Show Choir? She said yes. What is your favorite song in Show Choir? I like them all, I enjoy the fast songs for dancing and the slow songs because they sound beautiful. (Mine is personally “September” originally by Earth Wind and Fire)? What made you choose the songs? I try to find variety of songs, from movies, bradway or just fun songs, I like the words to communicate a message. A couple more questions: what do you enjoy about your choirs and show choir? I enjoy working with students who try their very best everyday. What is your plan for the holiday concert? All 3 choirs and the show choir will be singing a variety of songs about winter and different holiday’s. This is a question I asked the odd 6th day chorus, If you had a chance would you want to join show choir? 10 said yes,7 said middle, and 9 said no and that’s it.

Strawberry or chocolate or vanilla

I interviewed some of the kids in newspaper club what their favorite is strawberry, chocolate, or vanilla and why.

Aditi said “Chocolate is my favorite because i think it has more taste than vanilla.”

Haven says “Strawberry because I do.”

Emma said “I like vanilla because it’s yummy!”

The Great Neopolitan Compromise! Mr. Stinebring’s Social Studies Class finally realized the only way they could score an ice cream party was if they could all agree on one flavor that would satisfy everyone….Gues what they picked as the flavor that made everyone smile??????

PENGUINS

It is hopefully going to snow soon, so I decided to give you some fun facts about penguins. Did you know their distinct tuxedo-like appearance is called countershading. Penguins don’t have wing bones also penguins can spend 75% of their lives under water. I wonder

if the fairy penguin can fly?

Penguins can survive temperatures below -40 degrees. Can you believe that? There is a penguin nicknamed the fairy penguin. I hope you have enjoyed these fast facts about penguins.

Thoughts on a cold December day!

The Adventures of Ali Ess & Annie Mass“Zap” went the portal, “Goodbye” went my life. For a short introduction, my name is

Ali, I’m from Britain, and my best friend Annie just got me stuck in another dimension.

“Annie, I’m going to turn around, and there had better be you and a darn portal there!” I said.Of course, there was no portal, or Annie. That’s just wonderful, I thought. Five minutes ago I’m in my best friends million dollar lab (she’s rich because her parents are scientists), and now I’m stuck here, alone, with a phone and my clothes for survival equipment. At least I can text with aliens…. Or Annie. Of course, I could just call her! I dialed her number and prayed.

More KMS Sponsored DancesWhat’s the deal with having only 2 KMS sponsored dances a year?

Why can’t us students enjoy and have fun at more dances? Many students can’t always attend the two dances because of sports or other afterschool activities. Besides most students never want the night to end, so why do we have to let the dances end???

I know money can be an issue but we could always have parents volunteer to bring in water and pizza or other snacks.

Since we already have 2 dances year they are in separate quarters, but maybe we could have at least one every quarter.

I know myself that I and a lot of other students are not allowed to go to the REC. Dances and I always miss out on a lot, so wouldn’t a lot of students feel more included if we had more KMS sponsored dances

Being a child in the 1500s

Being a child or teenager in the 1500’s was difficult. I've researched different cultures around the world, about what it was like in the 1500s. Children got married as young as 12 years old! Their parents were very strict, if you think your parents are strict wait till you learn what some of the punishments were for not following their rules. For example, some children would have cactus spines pushed into their skin, or were held over fire containing chiles and forced to inhale the smoke. For fun, in Ancient Greece, they threw a ball around made of pig's bladder, may I just say, ew!

Being a child in the 1500s In most of these places girls didn't go

to school, yet boys did. Of course sometimes this is different like Aztec children went to school because they thought it was important. Most girls worked around the house, and did laundry and house things, yet in one culture they learned how to fight. Many children died early because they didn’t have much medicine. As many as 25% of children died before the age of 5. 40% kids died before the age of 16. Of course this must be difficult for parents so some didn’t consider children theirs until 5 days after they were born. If you couldn't see yet, many children's lives were very difficult yet at least they were thankful for everything they had.

Pollution Affecting Millions Worldwide

Environmental pollution is one of the biggest problems the world faces today . Pollution is one of the biggest killers, affecting over 100 million worldwide . But wait one minute, pollution doesn't just affect the land, it affects the water and air we breathe too! Every year the amount of garbage dumped in the ocean is roughly about 14 billion pounds . That is about equal to 7,250 tons , but wait it gets worse. There are some places in the world that have pollution so bad it is like smoking 21 cigarettes a day! Beijing, China is one of the most polluted places on earth. Could you imagine smoking 21 cigarettes a day? Air pollution accounts for 8,000 deaths a year due to respiratory diseases. Unfortunately 5,000 people die each day as a result of unclean drinking water . So before you grab a glass of water from the sink, be thankful for it , and remember the future can be better or worse , but you can make a difference. By Emma Nuzzo

The DC Dance!

If you missed the DC dance, you missed a very fun and enjoyable night. The DC dance was held October 16, 2015. The DC dance tickets were 5 dollars each If you didn’t know the DC dance raises money for the DC trip which the fun adventure will be starting on April 14 and the adventure will end April 18. If you are a eager 6th or 7th you are not alone. But don’t worry you will have your turn.

Passing Time in the Halls at kms

Here at KMS , we have several locker stops throughout the day. Each locker stop is just two minutes,

but is that enough ? We interviewed several people in grades 6th and 7th graders.

● If you could change the amount of time you get in between classes how long would they be ?

● Do you think we have enough time in between classes ?

Question : do you think everyone has enough time in between classes?

Kinna, 6th grader cluster B : dYes, efinitely , 2 minutes is tplenty of time to grab everything and walk

to class , which is less than 20 feet away.

No, because if we are coming from spanish, chorus, or gym we need to get upstairs in little time.

Question : if you could change the time between classes what would you change it to ?Morgan 7th grader cluster D : Four minutes! it would give us more time to get up stairs and go to our lockers than class.

Are We Getting Enough Sleep?

Are we getting enough sleep? Some people think they do,but they are still a bit groggy in the morning. Some people get enough sleep, but they rush their morning routine and sacrifice eating a healthy breakfast,which is the most important meal of the day. That can lead to bigger issues because even though they’re getting enough sleep, they’re not getting enough energy from the food they need. That might lead to suffering in school. The recommended amount for kids our age is 9-11 hours. Kids sometimes only get 6-8 hours. Tip:Shut off devices an hour before you go to sleep to calm you down and maybe use an alarm clock. Sleep is a very important thing.

Helping the Environment

There are lots of ways to help the environment. Recycling. It’s something that can really help the environment. If you have a recycling bin, you can put your old plastic water bottles, styrofoam bowls, and old papers in it. If you want to do more, you can even have a compost bin and put vegetable and fruit leftovers like apple cores. Our garbage is building and causing more and more landfills. If we want to keep our wonderful Earth beautiful,we have to work for it. When you’re at school and your teachers say your class is cleaning out binders, think, “Can I help the environment?” Put your papers in the recycling bin. Throw your apple core in the compost. We can all help the environment.

If you would like your name in a story that is fine; it does not have to be if you don’t want it to be. (Don’t be worried if you don’t get a reply within a day we will read every story that we receive. Submit your poems, stories or anything you like!
