INDUSTRY UPDATES:

A record year for Top Energy

Top Energy has delivered its strongest operating financial result in 27 years of operation. The 2018-19 fiscal year has been dominated by the generation expansion project at Ngawha. Drilling of the three production wells by Icelandic Drilling Ltd commenced in May 2018 with early indications the wells could provide enough geothermal fluid, temperatures and pressure to power the station. In the final result, production flow exceeded the volumes required and the enthalpy was better than expected, resulting in an increased expected net output from 25MW to 31.5MW.

The presence of lithium – a core element in electric vehicle batteries – in local geothermal brine has long been understood. But studies by government-owned GNS Science show it is also present in the broader basin. Reviewing existing data, including almost 200 core samples from geothermal wells and drilling from epithermal gold exploration, the study identified 31 sites where lithium was present at more than 200 parts per million, with the high of 3,500 ppm reported at Ohaaki

GNS Science wins Vision Matauranga funding for a geothermal project

GNS Science will work with Tahorakuri A1 Section 30 Trust to revive land which has suffered from subsidence, loss of geothermal surface features and westward migration of the Waikato River. The Trust wants to reconnect their community and economy with the geothermal land and unlock the value of resources of the land while ensuring its restoration. Project leaderfor GNS Science, Anya Seward, said the work would build a model to develop a plan for protecting, preserving and possibly restoring wahi tapu and taonga. Click here for details.
