I wish to extend to each of you a great wel- come to the 73rd Annual Lamar Fair, highly recognized as Missouri’s Largest Free Fair. I think back of the days when Debbie and I were parents of “younger” children and the joys we experienced from seeing their eyes light up as they anticipated the fair “coming to town”. It is only equaled, if not exceeded now, by our grandchildren experiencing and reacting the same way. No doubt there is just something special to anyone and everyone who has ex- perienced our Lamar Fair. It is also the start of a new Lamar Tigers potential record breaking season, a place reunions revolve around, and a coming harvest for so many hard working folks in our community. Through the years I have come to realize more and more the value this event provides to all our community. Yes, of course, it is the thrill of the rides, sounds, the lights and ex- citement all wrapped up within just a few city blocks. What we may not see is what goes on behind the scenes to make this super event happen. Planning for the Fair is almost a “Year Long Non-Stop Flight” of activity, from the Fair Committee to all the committees that help plan for the parades. Prepare for the huge livestock and animal displays, shows and auctions, plants, vegetables, quilts displays and shows. Let’s not forget the Artworks of different me- diums which seemingly come alive with their level of quality. Music shows at Thiebaud in the AC is oftentimes a welcome relief from our summer heat, and a chance to relax and visit. These and many other activities are “De- fining Tributes” to the work ethic, talent, per- sistence, diligence to accomplishing tasks, and quality of our people of this county. Having last year experienced the pleasure and honor of riding in the Rotary Parade as Mayor of Lamar, I was able to gain a perspec- tive few have experienced. At first glance I saw an ocean of faces, waves, smiles and cheers. Children used their eagle eyes for the candy being distributed various ways. Parents watched their children while catching a quick glimpse at what is in front of them at the mo- ment. Carnival workers seemed to enjoy the parade maybe because it gave them a break and a chance to sit for a moment. I also know a local church that “feeds” these carnival work- ers as an outreach before the carnival opens and so maybe, just maybe they look at the La- mar Fair differently than all the others. Through it all the most striking observation I discovered was the simple fact that people came together to enjoy at least one “Slice of the Lamar Fair”. At that moment they seemed unburdened from the “worries of life” we all face at different times. For those few min- utes they simply enjoyed THE MOMENT. As Mayor, I would want each one to enjoy as many of these activities as you have time for. To me, the Lamar Fair provides hope and faith in our fellow man. I see in the faces of the crowd and am thankful for blessings of even being able to hold these events. It’s a chance to demonstrate thankfulness to their friends, fam- ily and all those who help put this event on the map. Lamar and Barton County is a GREAT place to live and work, and the Fair brings people together like few other places do. A short time ago a person not from this area was asked to describe what he saw and wit- nessed as his group toured Lamar while offer- ing suggestions to promote the economy. He said Lamar is “The Place of Legendary Begin- nings”. He’s right! From Harry Truman, to the Three Admirals, to Wyatt Earp, each one of us are playing a part whether we realize it or not. What better place to continue these great tradi- tions and start new ones that can be found than at the Lamar Fair. Hope to see you there! Sincerely, Kent Harris City of Lamar, Mayor

Shows, Contests, Parades, Livestock & MORE!

I wish to extend to each of you a great wel-come to the 73rd Annual Lamar Fair, highly recognized as Missouri’s Largest Free Fair. I think back of the days when Debbie and I were parents of “younger” children and the joys we experienced from seeing their eyes light up as they anticipated the fair “coming to town”. It is only equaled, if not exceeded now, by our grandchildren experiencing and reacting the same way. No doubt there is just something special to anyone and everyone who has ex-perienced our Lamar Fair. It is also the start of a new Lamar Tigers potential record breaking season, a place reunions revolve around, and a coming harvest for so many hard working folks in our community.

Through the years I have come to realize more and more the value this event provides to all our community. Yes, of course, it is the thrill of the rides, sounds, the lights and ex-citement all wrapped up within just a few city blocks.

Let’s not forget the Artworks of different me-diums which seemingly come alive with their level of quality. Music shows at Thiebaud in the AC is oftentimes a welcome relief from our summer heat, and a chance to relax and visit. These and many other activities are “De-fining Tributes” to the work ethic, talent, per-sistence, diligence to accomplishing tasks, and quality of our people of this county.

Having last year experienced the pleasure and honor of riding in the Rotary Parade as Mayor of Lamar, I was able to gain a perspec-tive few have experienced. At first glance I saw an ocean of faces, waves, smiles and cheers. Children used their eagle eyes for the candy being distributed various ways. Parents

watched their children while catching a quick glimpse at what is in front of them at the mo-ment. Carnival workers seemed to enjoy the parade maybe because it gave them a break and a chance to sit for a moment. I also know a local church that “feeds” these carnival work-ers as an outreach before the carnival opens and so maybe, just maybe they look at the La-mar Fair differently than all the others.

Through it all the most striking observation I discovered was the simple fact that people came together to enjoy at least one “Slice of the Lamar Fair”. At that moment they seemed unburdened from the “worries of life” we all face at different times. For those few min-utes they simply enjoyed THE MOMENT. As Mayor, I would want each one to enjoy as many of these activities as you have time for.

To me, the Lamar Fair provides hope and faith in our fellow man. I see in the faces of the crowd and am thankful for blessings of even being able to hold these events. It’s a chance to demonstrate thankfulness to their friends, fam-ily and all those who help put this event on the map. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW:1. Your name and/or the names of those in your group.2. What is the name of your song?3. How many microphones or amplification jacks for instruments will you need?4. Will you be using a background CD that we will play?5. Will you be available for a sound check at the Thiebaud Auditorium on Tuesday

evening of the fair week?

This year our Wednesday evening program will begin at 6:30 p.m. We want to fill the first hour with our school-age performers. Youth ministers, send us your talent or bring your youth group to perform. After that we’ll turn loose our seasoned veterans of gospel music. We look forward to our past performers returning and we hope to find a new performer or two. Of course this is not about the performance, but it’s about keeping the Gospel Message a vital part of our fair and our local culture.

Thanks C.K.
