JEREMY’S MESSAGE

Like many people of my age group, I grew up listening to and loving the music of the Carpenters. Their music was also loved by my parents’ generation and the generation after me. They continue to have great appeal.

Karen Carpenter with her unique “smooth as honey” voice remains one of my favourite singers and in my opinion possessed one of the most beautiful human singing voices ever. She and her pianist, arranger, vocalist, musical partner, and brother Richard Carpenter made musical magic with tunes by composers like Roger Nichols, Paul Williams and Leon Russell amongst others and made these songs their own with their signature sound.

Many people don’t know that Karen Carpenter was also a great jazz drummer and played the occasional mesmerising drum solo on their concerts.

Her sudden and untimely passing in 1983 saddened many of us who love the music of the Carpenters.

In 2002, I recorded my first jazz tribute album of the music of the Carpenters entitled A Song For You, Karen. That album was recorded by Grammy-winning engineer Jim Anderson on the then cutting-edge DSD audio format and featured my dear friend and the great Singapore singer Jacintha Abisheganaden. It was released on the American audiophile label First Impression Music (FIM) on the SACD format and was cited by the respected American audiophile magazine Soundstage as being one of the best sounding SACDs released in North America in 2002, along with Bob Dylan’s album, Highway 51 Revisited.

In 2017, I tried hard to buy back the rights to the album A Song For You, Karen, from FIM after the passing of the founder and since the label was not operating any more. I was not successful and decided to then record a

new jazz tribute to the Carpenters using my current musical sensibilities.

This year, I invited my old friend Mark Chan with whom I first made music with in the ’70s; also my collaborator and musical colleague for more than 10 years, Melissa Tham; and the soulful blues singer from the US, Miz Dee Logwood, to each sing a couple of tracks on this new tribute album entitled Yesterday Once More. I also sang on a couple of tracks. Together with my musician friends guitarist Eugene Pao, saxophonist Tony Lakatos, bassist Rudi Engel and drummer Hong Chanutr Techatana-nan, I recorded this album in Germany, the US, Hong Kong and in Singapore, and I mixed it in Darmstadt, Germany with the ace engineer Klaus Endel.

In this concert, I have Mark Chan, Melissa Tham and Miz Dee joining us together with some great musician friends.

The music goes from being thoughtful and poignant to also being swinging and fun—such was the range of emotion the songs of the Carpenters can make us feel. We did not intend to copy the Carpenters (not possible) but instead have given the music a jazz treatment with jazz harmonies and rhythms while treating the beautiful melodies with reverence and love.

I would like to thank EFG Bank for sponsoring me in the recording of the album and in the production of this show as well as my supporters in the recording of the album, Evgeny Tugolukov as well as Gunjan and Showbhik Kalra.

I hope that this concert brings back many beautiful memories from the time these songs were hits and that you will join us in reliving Yesterday Once More.

With Love,Jeremy and friends

MARK CHANMark Chan is one of Singapore’s premier composers.

A singer, multi-instrumentalist, poet and painter in his own right, his unique blend of East and West, established in the ’80s has refined and matured up till the present day.

Composer-in-residence at Theatreworks for 10 years, Mark was music director for the hit Lear. More recently, with his hugely successful Little Toys《小玩意》he became the first to properly score a black and white Chinese Silent Film (2003, Singapore & Hong Kong Arts Festivals, Copenhagen Images of Asia, 2007 Shanghai International Arts Festival, 2010 Singapore Season Paris). His last big production at the Esplanade opened the 2012 Singapore Arts Festival: the opera: The Flight of the Jade Bird in the Esplanade Concert Hall.

He was awarded the Artistic Excellence Award by COMPASS in 2016.

EUGENE PAOEugene Pao is Hong Kong’s most publicly recognised jazz musician and his name is synonymous with jazz in Hong Kong. Such reputation cannot be more deserving as Pao has been at the vanguard of promoting jazz in the territory through his performances and recordings over the last 30-plus years.

Hong Kong first discovered its own guitar hero in the mid 1980s when Pao returned from studies in the US and began playing around town. Recognition came early from leading international jazz musicians. Some of his early recordings featured legends such as bassist Eddie Gomez, blues great Jimmy Witherspoon and saxophonist Michael Brecker. Over the last two decades, Pao has truly established himself as Hong Kong’s premier jazz guitarist. Jazz greats with whom he has performed on stage since then include Terumasa Hino, Bob Berg, Ulf Wakenius, Ernie Watts, Martin Taylor, James Moody, Bill Bruford, Jeff Berlin, Bobby McFerrin, Eric Marienthal, Richard Galiano, Georgie Fame and many more.

Pao continues to travel the world for performances at international jazz festivals, concert halls and jazz clubs, and to take part in selected recording projects. As a composer, he has contributed music to countless TV commercials, and his film soundtracks have been nominated for best original score at the HK Film Awards. Esquire magazine featured him on the cover as one of the 20 most influential men in their 20th anniversary Issue.
