A Message From The Vice President ExternalDear recruiters and corporate representatives,

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), University of Michigan Student Chapter is honored to invite your company to form part of the SHPE “Familia” by becoming a 2013-2014 sponsor through our Sponsorship and Partnership Program (SPP). Join us in the development of SHPE U-M, the source for quality Hispanic Engineers and Technical Talent.

Today, SHPE has grown to include more than 60 professional and 230 student chapters through-out the United States and Puerto Rico. With this vast network of individuals and resources, this organization serves as the primary source for academic and career growth and success, and as the largest society of Hispanic engineers and scientist in the United States. SHPE U-M received the 2007-2008 best student organization program award from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Continuing with our success, our chapter was the primary organizer of the Regional Leadership Development Conference (RLDC), which took place March, 2012. In the 2012-2013 academic year we were honored to recieve the SHPE Blue Chip award, which is the highest level of recognition awarded by SHPE Nationals.

Many of our achievements are due to the support of our sponsors, which is why we are asking for your support to continue the ongoing chapter improvement and success of our members. Therefore, I present to you our Corporate Sponsorship Brochure (CSB) for your review. The CSB contains our mission statement, goals, focus areas, and an overview of the 2013-2014 programs. Please, review this document carefully and take advantage of the sponsorship, re-cruitment, and collaborative opportunities described on this brochure.

Our chapter is part of one of the top engineering schools in the nation and our members are motivated and dedicated contributors to the student body and Hispanic community. Get To Know Our ChapterThe History of SHPE|UMICH

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at the University of Michigan (SHPE|UMICH) Chapter was founded in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1995 by a group of engineering students at the university. Their objective was to successfully establish a chapter with the purpose of serving as role models in the local Hispanic communi-ty. The group wanted a strong and influential professional organization on campus for Latino/a students. This objective has been met over the years due to the leader-ship and dedication of several executive board members that established academ-ic achievement and professional development as the norm for their cherished SHPE chapter. Due to these leaders’ efforts, the chapter has been well recognized on campus throughout the last decade— making SHPE’s entry into the University a welcomed and successful one.

SHPE|UMICH has always been an active member of the university and College of Engineering community. It has strong and well known bonds with SWE, NSBE, TBP, Engineering Global Leadership (EGL), and Latino Student Organization (LSO). Our organization expanded in 2008 and the chapter was awarded Student Organization of the Year by The University of Michigan. Following the 2008 success, the 2011-2012 academic year brought even more recognitions for SHPE|UMICH. The chapter hosted the 2012 Region VI Regional Leadership Development Conference (RLDC)with over 200 attendees—raising the standard for future years. During this RLDC, the chapter received its first Blue Chip Award.

Continuing with the chapter success; Paul Arias, as a dedicated member of SHPE|UMICH, received the SHPE STAR National Honor: Student Role Model Graduate Award (2011). In addition to his success, the chapter has taken first place in the case studies competition at NILA 2011, NILA 2012 and RLDC 2011 (Chicago).

Historically, the chapter has been well known for establishing long lasting rela-tionships. In the 2010 we reached out to Western International High School in South West Detroit and began to build our network. In 2011, we solidified the relationship by hosting our first Noche de Ciencia and starting a SHPE Jr. Chapter there. The SHPE Jr. Chapter now has more than 20 active members and is planned to increase signifi-cantly by the end of the year. With the revamping of the SHPE Detroit Professional Chapter (SHPE|DPC), we constantly look for opportunities to collaborate. Last year we cohosted Noche de Ciencia and plans are being made to co-sponsor a SHPE Jr. chapter in Cesar Chavez Academy in South West Detroit.

Our Chapter Now...At the University of Michigan, SHPE has continued to show support for the Hispan-ic community by providing resources to assist members during their college career. Such resources include workshops and general body meetings, where various com-panies speak about career opportunities, provide resume and interviewing skills workshops, and provide students with a better understanding of the opportunities that come with being an engineer. We not only develop as a community within the university, but also thrive as a “familia.”

Demogaphics and StatisticsSHPE|UMICH has been recognized several times as one of the most prominent profes-sional societies on campus; for example, this year more than 20 members received the ScholarPOWER Award. The ScholarPOWER Banquet was originally created to honor the academic achievement of underrepresented minority engineering students, who historically have not participated in, achieved at, or graduated from universities at the same rate as students from the majority population. Our diverse community ex-cels in academic performance, leadership, and professional development. Our chap-ter shows great variety in the academic major distribution of its members. We repre-sent nearly all engineering majors as well as non-engineering disciplines, including Computer Science, Business, and Management. Figure 1 shows the major distribution within SHPE|UMICH. The University of Michigan offers an education of excellence in the engineering field with ten of their programs ranked over the top ten of the nation.

Academic Excellence

This event is specifically designed to help undergraduates, particularly freshmen and transfer students, succeed academically by providing them practical time man-agement tools, effective study habits, a forum to form study groups, and information about study abroad opportunities.

Study Tables

Mentorship Program

Study Tables are essentially study sessions that provide members a private and opti-mum environment for learning. During these sessions, upperclassmen and graduate students serve as mentors for younger students. This weekly study session expands and provides unique academic resources to our members. Further, the recurring weekly sessions embed rigorous and effective study habits, which many underclass-men seek to develop. In addition, once a month, we carry out Collaborative Study Ta-bles (CSTs), which we do in conjunction with other Engineering student organizations, including honor societies. These events take advantage of the many high-achieving upperclassmen that are in SHPE and other societies, by having them serve as tutors for other students in the College of Engineering.

At the University of Michigan, there is a period of time before class registration, called the “Backpacking period”, which is intended for students to select classes and work a schedule for the upcoming semester. Upperclassmen from the SHPE|UMICH chapter volunteer their time to help underclassmen define a schedule for next semester as well as plan long term course calendars. Our faculty advisor, a Chemical Engineering Department Faculty member, is present at the session to mentor the underclassmen.

Backpacking Sessions

We plan on introducing a mentorship program this year to create strong bonds be-tween upper level students and first year students. These mentoring relationships are intended to focus on: academics, study skills, and day-to-day issues surrounding undergraduate school; career planning and networking; and guidance on personal issues. Students participating in the program will be treated to special cultural activ-ities in and around Ann Arbor.

Fall Academic Retreat

SHPE strives to promote academic excellence among its members as their first pri-ority. Academic success is a strong measure of a student’s technical competency. To emphasize the importance of academic success, we have hosted different events pro-viding a wide range of resources for our members.

Professional DevelopmentOne of the main pillars of our society is the professional and leadership development of our members. The conferences sponsored by SHPE National helps us achieve this. In addition, we welcome corporate representatives who wish to carry out workshops regarding interviewing, improving resumes, etc.

Corporate WorkshopsEvery year, we partner with companies to host workshops during our General Body Meetings. Workshops are focused on the professional and leadership development of our membership. The workshop topics include, but are not limited to: resume struc-ture, professional presence, leadership, interview preparation, and corporate culture. These are also opportunities for companies to recruit and advertise their programs and opportunities.

SHPE National ConferenceThe SHPE National Conference is a major event for the Society of Hispanic Profes-sional Engineers, Inc. and the largest technical and career conference for Hispanic students and professionals in the country. Each year, the SHPE Conference attracts over 5,000 engineering professionals, students and corporate representatives. Theconference is an opportunity for engineering companies and corporations to recruittop talent from SHPE membership. It also provides educational, technical, and career opportunities for professional and student engineers. We as a chapter recognize the cost involved in attending the conference, therefore our goal is to sponsor a minimum of 20 members to attend. Sponsored members are selected by academic achievement and high participation within the chapter.

NILAThe National Institute for Leadership Advancement (NILA) is SHPE’s premier lead-ership training program for chapter executive board members. The Graduate Lead-ership Institute is open to full-time graduate students. Since its inception in 1986, NILA has grown to become an event widely anticipated by members and highly respected by corporate sponsors.

RLDC Regional ConferenceIn 2012, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor hosted the Regional Leadership Development Conference (RLDC). This regional conference had representation from over thirty SHPE chapters across nine northern Midwest states: Iowa, Missouri, Illi-nois, Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Indiana, Kentucky, and Wisconsin. The theme of the RLDC 2012 was “Rising to the Challenge.” The purpose of RLDC is to help improve the leadership skills of SHPE members. RLDC 2013 was hosted by University of Dayton.

www.umich.edu/~shpe10 Programs and Events - Philanthropy and Outreach

Philanthropy and Outreach

In the recent years our outreach program has been limited to middle school or young-er. Last year, SHPE|UMICH organized its first ever Shadow Day to target 9th-12th grade students. The aim of the program was to increase Hispanic acceptance and at-tendance to the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan by sparking the students’ interest in pursuing a STEM degree and empowering them to become pro-active towards higher education.

SHPE Jr. Chapter

Noche de Ciencias

SHPE Jr. focuses on both enhancing the education of Latino pre-college students and positively influencing them to become tomorrow’s science and technology leaders. Specifically, SHPE Jr. aims to augment the success of pre-college students by build-ing self-esteem and leadership skills, providing mentorship at a very volatile time in young students’ life, and increasing college access for Latino/a students by promot-ing academic excellence. We have established our first SHPE Jr. Chapter at Western International High School in an effort to cultivate the next generation of outstanding Hispanic engineers. We plan to expand to other high schools in the area.

In alignment with the mission of our chapter, the executive board decided to pursue the opportunity to impact the world and the Hispanic community beyond the con-tinental U.S. territory. Hence, SHPE|UMICH made the first volunteering experience abroad to improve the homes of the elderly of a community in San Jose, Costa Rica. SHPE|UMICH volunteers went out to the community and helped in the renovation through various construction projects. This included building or repairing any part of the house infrastructure and/or improving water system. This project was coordi-nated and managed by Maximo Nivel, an international community service organiza-tion. We plan to continue our partnership with them throughout the next few years and continue impacting the world.

SHPE’d Abroad

Noches de Ciencias –Science Nights – is a initiative to promote knowledge and inter-est in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) among the Hispanic commu-nity. The SHPE|UMICH chapter held Noche de Ciencias at Cesar Chavez Academy High School (CCAHS) in cooperation with SHPE|DPC. The goal of Noches de Ciencias is to inform K-12 students and their families about STEM education and college options through interactive workshops and activities.

Shadowing Program

Being outstanding engineers is not simply a matter of possessing high technical com-petency, but it is also a matter of carrying ourselves in a manner that raises our per-sonal standards and those of the people around us. We do this by continually giving back to our communities.

[email protected] 11Programs and Events - Social and Cultural Events

Social and Cultural EventsWe place great value and importance on the concept of “SHPE Familia”. Our social events promote the sense of “familia” inside our chapter. Furthermore, a great per-centage of our membership has travelled long distances away from home to come to study at Michigan. Our cultural events bring the membership together to remind us of who we are, where we come from, and the importance of expressing our culture and celebrating our heritage.

SHPE BBQThe SHPE BBQ is our first major social event, which serves as a way to welcome stu-dents to campus, inform them about upcoming events, and equip them with the tools necessary for success at the University of Michigan. It is an event that SHPE members look forward to during welcome week, as it is a chance to reconnect with their SHPE familia and share their summer experiences. For freshmen, the event provides them a first glance on what it means to be part of the SHPE Familia.

Soccer TournamentsEvery year, we organize two soccer tournaments composed of teams representing different organizations on campus. Its purpose is to enhance ties with other organi-zations, establish a sense of camaraderie among the College of Engineering societies, and instill a spirit of good sportsmanship and competitiveness.

Salsa con SalsaOrganized with the Engineering Global Leadership (EGL) Honor Society, Salsa con Salsa is a Salsa dance lesson teaching session accompanied with chips and salsa. His-tory of salsa music is provided as well as a lively atmosphere on campus that pro-motes cultural understanding through the concept of “learn, do, and teach.”

Winter Traditions FestivalAround the world, various cultural traditions mark the beginning of the winter. The purpose of the activity is to raise awareness through the University of Michigan, es-pecially throughout the Engineering campus, about the importance of cultural and ethnic diversity. This goal is accomplished by a celebration of the many diverse tradi-tions and holidays observed by the University of Michigan community.

Biweekly Social EventsTwice a month, we carry out social events that incorporate a cultural component or theme. Each social event will be planned, organized, and executed by a committee comprised of 3 or 4 members. We place great value on leadership, and giving mem-bers this responsibility provides them with the experience of working in groups, del-egating, managing their times and schedules, committing to specific task, and com-promising.
