    SHPE Jr.Chapter

SHPE Jr. focuses on both enhancing the educa-tion of Latino pre-college students and positivelyinuencing them to become tomorrows science

and technology leaders. Specically, SHPE Jr.

aims to augment the success of pre-college stu-dents by building self-esteem and leadershipskills, providing mentorship at a very volatiletime in young students life, and increasing col-lege access for Latino/a students by promotingacademic excellence. We have established ourrst SHPE Jr. Chapter at Western International

High School in an effort to cultivate the next gen-eration of outstanding Hispanic engineers. Weplan to expand to other High Schools in the area.

    Multicultural Celebration

This event simultaneously generates excite-ment around education and commemorates theholiday season while providing a service to thecommunity. This ambitious program began in2007 and seeks to bring toys, winter clothing, and school supplies to southwest Detroit whilereinforcing the Hispanic culture for those of uswho have come a long way from home to attendthe University of Michigan.

    Science Workshop

A long-standing tradition in SHPE has been ourbiannual science workshops for local middleand elementary school students. This programcreates memorable experiences for young kids

in order to aspire to a future in science, technol-ogy, and math. Typically, we have done this atthe Ann Arbor District Library but this year wewill be partnering with Western InternationalHigh School in order to bring this experience tothe Hispanic communities in Detroit.

Being outstanding engineers is not simply a matter of possessing high technical competency, but itis also a matter of carrying ourselves in a manner that raises our personal standards and those ofthe people around us. We do this by continually giving back to our communities.
