SCHOOL NEWS

WE WILL MISS YOU, KERRIGAN!

Here at SHS and throughout our school district community, we are profoundly saddened by the passing of Kerrigan Clark. She was in a car accident in Cornelius Pass on Wed. May 6. Our deepest sympathies go out to the entire Clark family. We encourage students to visit the memorial for Kerrigan outside SHS. This is a safe alternative to students walking along Cornelius Pass Road. A memorial service will be held onMonday May 11th at 5:00 pm in the Scappoose High School gymnasium.

ADDITIONAL COURSE OFFERINGS

We have added two new courses for the 2015-16 school year:

THEATRE DESIGN

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12

Length: 1 Semester (course may be repeated)

Prerequisite: None

This course offers students an opportunity to pull back the curtain and investigate what happens behind the scenes in order to create the magic of the theatre. Students will explore all backstage elements essential to a successful theatre production. As students work on lights, sound, costumes, sets, props, makeup and special effects, they will develop a practical hands-on knowledge of basic production design and construction in the theatre. Students will learn how to use power tools and operate stage rigging safely and efficiently. (Students must follow all instructor safe-guards and guidelines to be successful and remain in the class).

THEATRE

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12

Length: 1 Semester (course may be repeated)

Prerequisite: None

This course introduces students to the exhilarating world of theatre. As students investigate the theatre, developing foundational skills as performers, they will also be learning about themselves and building self-confidence. The course will include the study of acting techniques (voice, movement, and characterization), exercises in improvisation, prepared scenes, reading plays, critical analysis of live productions, and audition techniques. Students will acquire a broad perspective of the theatre and learn good rehearsal and performance skills.

If students are interested in forecasting for the above new courses, please let the Counseling Office know by Fri. May 15. For every forecasted new course, students must drop one of their already forecasted courses.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

Our teachers have been implementing strategies that provide opportunities for students to take ownership in their learning. Recently, our staff spent three hours working through several techniques that increase student engagement and increase critical thinking - including Placemat Group Strategy, Gallery Walk, Close Reading Strategy, and Socratic Seminar. Google these to find out more!

FYI – IMPORTANT REMINDERS

As we move into warmer weather, here are some reminders for students and families about our dress code. Please help us by reminding your students that understanding what is appropriate in public places or work environments is an important life skill. Thank you!

Clothing with comments in reference to drugs, alcohol, tobacco, ethnicity, racial orientation, gender, gangs or sexual expressions will not be allowed. Clothing which promotes violence or foul language, or makes reference to negative, religious comments will not be allowed. Anything considered disruptive to the educational process will also not be allowed. We may contact parents/guardians to provide other clothing for students who are wearing something inappropriate at school.

Students are not to wear:

o Low-cut and/or revealing tops

o Any clothing with pictures of weapons

o Pants that sag or drag on the floor o Tops, dresses, or pants that expose undergarments or the mid-section

o Tube tops, spaghetti straps, and halter tops

o Tops that are too short. If you raise your arms and skin can be seen, it‟s too short. o Shorts or skirts that are not fingertip length or longer, even if wearing tights/leggings or shorts

underneath

o Tights and leggings cannot be worn without a shirt or top that is finger-tip length

o Spikes or chains

o Pajamas or slippers

This dress code also applies to students at any school-sponsored event and also to adults who volunteer at Scappoose High School. Due to the ever-changing nature of symbolism in dress, dress code policies are subject to change.”

CLASS OF 2015

FROM THE MAIN OFFICE

All fees must be cleared in order for your student to receive his/her diploma. Avoid the rush! See Jami Schmid in the Main Office to settle your account. You can check your balance on ParentVUE.

Recently, we mailed you a packet of information with details of our graduation activities and etc. If you did not receive a packet or would like another, there are more in the Counseling Office. An assembly for all of our seniors was also held recently where instructions, behavioral expectations, and etc. for our Graduation events were explained. Please let us know ASAP if you have any questions regarding our Graduation events so we can all make the most of this memorable time for our seniors.

Page 11: SHS E-Newslettershs.scappoose.k12.or.us/uploads/5/6/2/4/5624227/shs_e-newsletter... · SHS E-Newsletter May 8, 2015 ... oPants that sag or drag on the floor oTops, dresses, ... Joshua

Encourage your senior to hang in there for a few more weeks and take care of business! Please help your seniors to keep track of deadlines and details and to finish their high school careers in a way they will be proud to remember!

FROM THE COUNSELING OFFICE

Watch out for senioritis! Pay close attention to senior deadlines. Take time to check-in with your student, and if you have any concerns about progress toward Graduation (credits, etc.) or anything else!, please contact the Counseling Office ASAP.

Our Graduation program features the names (and amounts) of scholarships our seniors have earned, plus their community service hours. Please submit this information to Josie Bradley in the Counseling Office by 4:00pm on May 15! A scholarship reporting form is available in the Counseling Office. No exceptions can be made due to our printing deadline!

FROM THE 2015 SAFE & SOBER GRADUATION COMMITTEE

The Safe & Sober Graduation Committee has been working all year to put together what will be a fantastic All-Night Party full of fun things to do, with great food and great prizes. Encourage your graduate to take part in this safe and very memorable experience! There is no charge to attend.

And we need volunteers! Our goal is to rotate chaperones in and out of different areas so no one gets stuck in one area all night. Unless you have a specific area (food, activities, etc), we will add you to the group of volunteers and let you know where we need you. We need about 20 volunteers for security and to assist with all the fun activities. Please notify Tammy Lukinbeal by Mon. May 18 at [email protected] if you would like to volunteer to help at the All-Night Party. You will enjoy it!

Speaking of prizes, can you donate a gift card or a gift basket that a senior would enjoy receiving as a raffle prize at the All-Night Party? These can be taken to the Main Office.

We are still missing the baby pictures of many of our seniors for the Baccalaureate slide show. Please send them [email protected] ASAP!!!

We will be displaying our seniors‟ collage poster boards in the Cafeteria on the night of Baccalaureate. This is another great graduation tradition at SHS – a lifetime photo collage. Please note: we ask that you use regular poster board (NOT foam core – it is difficult to hang and display). These are due in the Main Office on May 20.
