As with any team, we have a strong support network surrounding us that ranges from university academics to technicians. Overseeing the entire project are our two faculty advisors; Dr David Asquith and Dr Torsten Schenkel who continue to offer unwavering support and guidance on all aspects of the project. Both David and Torsten have previously worked on other Formula Student teams so are able to offer the team their wealth of experience to both support and inspire.

MEET THE TEAM

We have continuing support from Matt Goodwin and Robin Sykes, university Technicians who are on hand to offer the team manufacturing guidance throughout the design and build process.

The total will be broken down over the 2015 season with a significant payment being made immediately and the remainder being transferred after assembly has been signed off allowing this segment of the overall total to be utilised for testing and possible development.

While being hugely beneficial to the team, the new partnership establishes a positive link between the university as a whole and Caterpillar, investing in the future of young engineers.

£5,500

The team are proud to announce their partnership with industry giants, Caterpillar. Members of the management team pitched to company executives at their headquarters in Leicester. The sponsorship deal totalling £5,500 will be hugely beneficial to the build of this year’s car and also provide a vital financial foundation for the future of the team.

TEAM EXPANSION

During an extensive recruitment process at the beginning of the academic year, particular focus was placed on the recruitment of non engineering students with the purpose of widening the scope of the team. As a result of this recruitment drive, we have been joined by students from academic backgrounds such as Mathematics, Physical Education and School Sport, Business, Product Design and also Graphic Design. All of whom are committed to the overall success of the team and are wasting no time in making their mark on this year’s team effort.

Final year graphic design student Stephanie has designed the large scale SHU Racing poster that is currently hanging in the atrium of Sheaf building.

The decision has been made to reinstate the SHU Racing society with immediate effect. It will be a valuable asset over the coming year, allowing the team to fully utilise all levels of union support while increasing the potential target market which will prove beneficial when it comes to future recruitment of team members of all academic backgrounds.

MANUFACTURING COMMENCES

A concept design freeze was imposed days before the festive period. Now we have reached the end of the exam period, manufacturing will be commencing shortly. Team members have produced a selection of rapid prototypes. The development of rapid prototypes enables us to communicate design ideas and concepts while gauging effective validation of design fit, form, and function.

Currently several materials and parts are on order from our suppliers, the differential from Drexler, Wheels and tyres have also been ordered and are expected soon, Chassis tubing has been ordered with Proformance metals - who are also giving us a formula student discount in return for some sponsorship!

In terms of chassis production, fabrication is due to start shortly, as well as manufacture of almost all the other parts on the car – up-rights, pedal box, suspension system to name a few.

An area of keen interest is that of the differential mount due to the mount failure at the 2014 event. The Upright, hub, calliper and disc prototypes are all setup for a 10 inch wheel and will be used on each wheel for the 2015 car. Full focus will soon be given to the manufacturing process, we are happy to say we are on schedule.
