Hallam student Jess Wright is aiming to build on last year’s bronze medal when he competes at the BUCS Clay Pigeon Shooting Championships on the 6th and 7th of December. Jess, a chemistry student, finished third in the men’s individual competition last year and is hoping to use his success already this year as a springboard to help him bring home another medal this time round.

It’s been a busy but successful year for Jess, who told SHUlife Sport, “My confidence is high after winning 17 titles, 5 gold medals, a silver and a bronze this year.” He was declared Yorkshire, North of England, English and British Junior Champion earlier in the year and as recently as November, he won the Yorkshire FITASC Junior Championship as well as the Belvoir Skeet Junior Championships.

Another highlight came when he took part in the World Sporting Championships in Dubai by personal invitation of the Prince. As you’d expect, competing at such a high level has its demands yet Jess is finding that his hard-work is bearing fruit; “The commitment that my dad has had with me travelling all around the country and competing in several disciplines has made me a better overall shot, and stands me in good stead.”

Despite all his previous success this year, it is on the future where Jess’ focus lies and his aims are set for the upcoming BUCS Championships: “A medal is the target still, however I do believe I can win.”We wish Jess the best of luck and make sure you check SHUlife Sport to find out how he gets on.

The 2014/2015 BUCS season is well under way and so far it’s been a successful few months for Sheffield Hallam. They are currently ranked 23rd in the overall BUCS table with 889.5 points*, with 771.5 of those coming from league fixtures. Last year Hallam finished 19th in the BUCS table with a point’s total of 1504 and this year they will be hoping that they are currently on their way to beating that score.

There are currently several teams that are top of their leagues and eyeing silverware come the end of

the BUCS season in March. After 4 games the men’s American football 1st team are top of the league after convincing wins against University of York, University of Lincoln, University of Leeds and University of Hull.

Men’s hockey’s 1st have won 5 games from 8 and currently sit top of the Premier North Division. Durham, Nottingham and Loughborough are all close behind however and will be hoping to pounce on any potential Hallam slip-ups.

of their league after a convincing victories over Teesside, Sunderland and York whilst the women’s rugby union side are having an awesome start to the season and currently sit joint top of the Northern 2B division and they also have a game in hand on fellow leaders Durham. 118-0 and a 107-0 wins over Newcastle in successive weeks have been a particular highlight for them, with the first coming in the cup and the latter happening in a league fixture.

The men’s volleyball 2’s are 3 points clear at the top of the Northern 3B division after 5 games, winning four and losing the other. If Hallam were

to bring home the title, it would be a massive turnaround from last season, when they finished 6th in the same league.

And finally, women’s badminton 1st are one point off top spot after going undefeated in their six league games so far, winning four. Their last game of the season against University of Central Lancashire could prove to be vital in deciding who takes home the league title with UCLAN currently holding top spot.

Both the men’s indoor cricket 1’s and the men’s water polo 1’s are enjoying superb starts to the season and currently hold a superb record of wins from their BUCS games so far this season.

The guys from Hallam cricket have already secured their passage to the next stage of BUCS after topping the Northern 1A division with their brilliant record. They put in some brilliant performances along the way, dominating their opposition. An 88-89 win against University of Sheffield and a 102-76 win against Manchester Metropolitan on the opening day were followed by wins against University of Leeds and Huddersfield next time out.

In their final game day of the season, Hallam then defeated Salford, Leeds Becket Carnegie and Bradford to secure a 100% league

record and their progress into the last 16 of BUCS.

Like the cricket team, the men’s water polo side are also top of their respective division. They have won all six of their league games whilst also progressing to the next round of the BUCS Trophy.

The league started with a 25-1 win over Bradford and that pretty much encapsulated how the rest of the season has gone. Hallam has secured some unbelievable wins, beating Newcastle 28-4, Liverpool 29-3 and then defeating Bradford once again, this time by a score of 30-4.

They then ended November with a 33-4 win over Stirling in the cup and this sort of form; it looks like it will be a very successful season for Hallam!

The Sheffield Hallam women’s football 1st team is currently leading the way in their university league.

After 6 games played they sit top with 15 points with 5 wins and just 1 defeat under their belt. The team has scored an impressive 51 goals in those 6 games whilst conceding only 12. Big wins against closest rivals the University of Sheffield (10-2) and two 11-0 victories over the University of Manchester have been amongst the main highlights so far this calendar year. Their only defeat came at home at the hands of the University of Leeds at a score of 3-5 to the visitors.

Jess Sigworth who plays for Doncaster Belles is currently the leading scorer for the Hallam team with 17 goals in an outstanding 6 matches. The manager Julie Grundy has certainly got her team in top shape and must be thrilled with the achievements made already this season.

In their first game of December, Hallam’s women recorded another thrilling 6-2 win against University of Sheffield at Sports Park meaning that Hallam are going into the winter break on a well deserved high with a lot more to come in 2015.

Sheffield Hallam’s three BUCS netball squads have been enjoying a lot of success at the start of this season.

The firsts are currently sitting third in Northern 2B, behind Leeds Beckett and Newcastle.

After a thrilling start to the season with great results coming in, the seconds face going into the winter break top of the tight Northern 4B division with University of Sheffield and University of Leeds biting at their ankles.

The third side have also had a fantastic start to the season as they lie just behind Northumbria at the top of the Northern 7B division however they do hold the

advantage of having two games in hand and only three points to make up if they’re going to overtake the team from the north-east.

In the Northern Conference Cup, the seconds were knocked out by walkover to Newcastle in the last 16 of the competition but the firsts have made it through to the quarter-finals where they will face Leeds Beckett seconds at the EIS on the 18th of February.

The third team have also been enjoying success in their cup, the Northern Conference Plate as they have made it through to the quarter-finals where they will face local rivals University of Sheffield in February.

Both the men’s squash 1’s and 2’s appear to be heading for successful league campaigns as they both currently top their respective divisions.

The 1’s currently lead the Northern 2B division after winning all four of their league games so far. 5-0 wins against Durham and Hull in October have been followed by a 3-2 win over Northumbria and a 5-0 win over Newcastle.

They now lead second-placed Leeds Becket Carnegie by 13 points ahead of their game in early December. The two sides have met this season in the Northern Conference Cup and on that day, Hallam edged out their opposition 11-10 and they will be hoping to repeat this to maintain their 100% record.

It’s also four from four for the men’s 2’s. They are currently joint-top of the Northern 4A division with University of Sheffield 3’s on 48 points, 6 ahead of 3rd placed Leeds. The two sides face each other in March on the final day of the season in what is shaping up to be an epic clash. Not only will bragging rights be at stake but it looks set to be a title-decider if both sides keep up their rich vein of form.

They have met before this campaign, with University of Sheffield winning 2-1 in the cup yet, in what will essentially be a cup-final atmosphere, anything can happen and Hallam will be hoping the 2’s and the 1’s can both end the season as champions.

November saw Sheffield Hallam record their highest ever finish at the BUCS Short Course Swimming Championships after they finished the weekend in 6th place with a total of 136 points.

Hallam were up against hundreds of students from universities all over Britain, in what was a very tough competition at Ponds Forge, yet they did brilliantly to take away seven medals in a variety of disciplines.

Rebecca Turner led the way for Hallam. She took gold in the women’s 200m freestyle as well as silver in the women’s 100m and 50m freestyle which helped her secure the trophy for biggest single points earner over the course of the weekend.

Ellie Faulkner, one of Turner’s team mates in the England Commonwealth squad over the

summer, also enjoyed success over the weekend, winning bronze in the women’s 800m freestyle. Hallam’s remaining three medals came in the disability categories. Sam Lewis won bronze in the women’s 100m breast stroke whilst Liz Simpkin took home two silver medals; one for the women’s 100m backstroke and another for the women’s 100m freestyle.

Hallam competed in several other finals over the course of the weekend including the men’s and women’s 4x50m freestyle relay, the men’s 100m butterfly and the men’s 200m butterfly.

Ryan Borthwick, Chair of Hallam Swimming, told us: “I’m absolutely thrilled with the team’s performance. Everybody stepped up to put in a great swim. Managing to finishing 6th overall, a place higher than last year, just shows our hard training is paying off.”

On the 16th of November, Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union played host to the BUCS Indoor Rowing Championships. Teams from University of Hull, University of Leeds, University of Sheffield, York St John University, Bradford University and hosts Sheffield Hallam University rowing club took part.

The Hallam team enjoyed some success in the 11 races that they competed in, specifically in the senior LWT Women’s 2km. The women finished in all of the top 6 positions, with Lucy Tame claiming the only win of the day for the Hallam team.

The women also picked up 3 third placed finishes in the senior Women’s 2km race heats with Olivia Mccabe, Jodie Thompson and Martha Browne picking up the

spoils.

The men were in consistent shape all afternoon with two 2nd place finishes from Tom Pye in the senior LWT Men’s 2km race and Jonny Summersgill in the senior Men’s 2km race. The men also enjoyed 2 top 3 finishes in the senior Men’s 2km race heats in the form of Patrick Green and Richard Smith. The day was a huge success, at each race spectators filled the open area in between the pods to cheer on their teammates and show their support. The Rowing Secretary Georgia Gurry said: “It’s been a great turn out, more people have come than we first thought after some late entries. The atmosphere is really good, and it’s been great to get the novices out. The Hallam teams are doing really well.”
