“Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” “Diamonds are forever.” “Diamonds in the rough.” Whatever you say about these precious gems, you can’t deny they are desirable! Tidbits has all the dirt on diamonds this week – read along and see!• The word “diamond” has its origins in the

Greek language from the word Adamas, which translates “unconquerable and indestructible.” The Greeks believed them to be splinters of stars that had fallen to Earth and believed diamonds promoted strength, invincibility, and courage to those who wore them.

•RankedasthehardestnaturalsubstanceonEarth,diamonds are composed entirely of carbon, the only gemstones composed of just one element. They are formed at high temperatures under intense pressure 87 to 120 miles (140 to 190 km) within the Earth’s mantle over billions of years. A volcanic eruption can often bring diamonds to the Earth’s surface. Although there are synthetic “diamonds,” there is no man-made way to reproduce the tremendous heat and pressure found deep within the Earth that creates diamonds. Millionaire publisher Malcolm Forbes had this to say about diamonds – “Diamonds are nothing more than chunks of coal that stuck to their jobs.”

the next hardest mineral on Earth, they are quite brittle and can be shattered by the single blow of a hammer. And if a diamond is placed inanovenata temperatureof1405°F(763°C), it will disappear without leaving so much as an ash behind.

• About 250 tons of earth must be mined toproduce a single one-carat diamond. Over 130,000,000 carats weighing 57,000 lbs.(26,000 kg) of diamonds are mined every year – a value of about $9 billion.

•OfallthediamondstobefoundonEarth,only20% of them are suitable for jewelry. The majority of diamonds are used for industrial drilling, grinding, cutting, and polishing tools. Diamonds are embedded into drill bits for drilling oil and gas wells through thousands of feet of rock.

•DiamondswerefirstdiscoveredinIndia,butmost diamond deposits are found in Africa and Russia.TherearesignificantdepositsinBrazil,Australia, and Canada, and in a few U.S. states, Arkansas, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. There’s only one mine in the world where you can be a miner, located at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas, a 37.5-acre ancientvolcanic crater. For $7, you can mine all day andkeepanythingyoufind.In1990,oneluckypark visitor found a diamond weighing 3.03 carats in the rough. After cutting, the gem was a perfect 1.09 carat. Don’t get your hopes up, however – gemologists estimate this was a one in a billion occurrence.

•Althoughlessthan1%ofdiamondsareminedin the U.S., America buys more than half of the world’s total production of quality gems.

RHUBARB CAKe 1 1/2 cups white sugar1/2 cup butter or margarine1 egg1 cup milk with 1 teaspoon baking soda1 teaspoon vanilla1/2 teaspoon salt2 cups flour2 cups rhubarb (cut in small pieces) Cream sugar and butter. Add egg and beat well. Add flour, salt , milk, vanilla then rhubarb. Spread in a greased 13x9 pan. Mix up 2/3 cup brown sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Bolt also likes other dogs so would do well in a home with other pets. Bolt will need regular brushing to keep him looking his best.

Hunter- Domestic medium hair, grey and white cat Hunter is a 3 year old medium hair male cat. In his previous home he was very scared of outside so

we are looking for him to find a forever indoor only home. He is used to living with other cats so a calm multi cat home could be good for him. He will require a scratching post or cat tree as he likes to stretch and scratch at it to keep his claws feeling good. He is sometimes vocal and does like to play with other polite cats. He is still young and very young at heart so lots of toy activities would be great.

Q: Our 10-year-old Shih Tzu recently started snoring, and now it’s getting worse. She snores just about every time she sleeps. If I we wake her when she begins snoring, she just starts up again. Is there something wrong? We’re not getting any sleep!

A: If you haven’t already done so, see your veterinarian to rule out an obstruction in the dog’s throat, such as a growth, or even a toy. “Maybe the problem has worsened as your dog has gained weight,” says Dr. Mark Russak, of Berlin, CT, president-elect of the American Animal Hospital Association. “Just as weight gain may be associated with snoring in people, the same is true for dogs. Snoring is also more common in dogs, such as Pugs, with short snouts.” “If your dog is overweight, the snoring will likely decline as your dog takes off the pounds. Your veterinarian can advise you on a weight-loss strategy,” says Russak. “Otherwise, consider moving your dog out of the bedroom so you can sleep. But I understand that is not likely advice you’ll consider. After all, my wife would more likely move me out of the bedroom before she moves the dog. Have you tried ear plugs?”
