Whenever your going to shoot outdoors there are some key things to remember. Getting your gear together and in

working order, choosing the right lens, having a tripod set up and then preparing to take the image. You have to make sure you pause and examine your subject before pressing the shutter.s in all types of photography you need to think about where you want your viewers eye to be drawn. Consider framing the subject differently than you might not usually have using the rule of thirds – but find something in your frame that

will grab your viewer’s eye and carefully think about how to position it.Sometimes going in extra close and focussing in on a part of the flower can create wonderful and unusual images that take on an abstract quality. Look for contrasting colors, patterns and textures. Sharp focus is important in all forms of photography but in flower Macro photography it is crucial and even a tiny adjustment can have massive implications for your shot as the depth of field is so small. In macro photography your depth of field is so subtle that having an attention to detail in focussing is crucial.

Every year, hundreds of predatory birds are in-jured by human activity. Many of these falcons,

owls, eagles and hawks die due to being hit by cars, becoming tan-gled in fishing line or netting, or from being shot at by ill informed hunters. A broken wing, cracked beak or even large scale loss of feathers can spell death for birds of prey, but there is currently an effort to assist injured birds across the U.S. Organizations are work-ing to build and maintain facili-ties where injured raptors can be brought and rehabilitated, either to be released later in life or to live out their remaining years in com-fort, to be used as teaching aids to help spread conservation aware-ness. Expert veterinary professions work to save birds found injured

in the wild, and will send experts to travel to a location to pick up an injured bird. Once rehabilitated physically and mentally, the birds are released. When I was a child, my uncle, a volunteer for Ver-mont’s Audubon Society, arrived at my house with a small box with a few holes in it. He did not ex-plain what was inside, but instead asked me to follow him into the woods. After a short hike up to a nearby rock vista on a somewhat high ridge, he opened the box a small amount and showed me the contents. A peregrine falcon, the fastest bird in the world, stood inside, excitedly shuffling around. My uncle explained that it had been hit by a car and had taken months to heal, but was now ready for release. As he opened the box completely and held it above his

head, the falcon hopped up on the edge of the box, leaped into the air and was gone within a few beats of its small wings. I can’t imagine the thrill this bird must have felt as it once again was free to roam the skies, having been given a second chance.

The turtles in this picture are Eastern Painted Tur-tles a subspecies of the Painted Turtle, which

live close to the atlantic coast rang-ing from New Brunswick to Geor-gia. Painted Turtles are one of the most commonly found turtles in North America and can be found anywhere from Canada to North-ern Mexico, and live in slow-mov-ing fresh water. (Ponds or lakes

typically, but also rivers.) Eastern Painted Turtles have dark smooth shell with red striped on the sides of their shell, and a pale yellow bottom shell. These turtles can live to be 55 years old. Painted Turtles also have a unique way of being an indicator species of global climate change due to their species having temperature-dependant sex deter-mination. Painted Turtles males are born if the nest temperature is be-

low 27 degrees Celsius and females are born if it is greater than 29 degrees Celsius. Because of these temperature factors these turtles male population compared to the female population could determine temperature changes in all regions where it lives.(Photo taken at Gray Animal Farm, Gray, Maine.)
