I wish I could teach you these skills, but I myself am ignorant. Besides, I am busy
earning money for the family to make ends
meet.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could get to know
about health care, first aid, home budgeting, grooming, creative
skills, practical life skills and tackling domestic
violence?

PROBLEMS OF THE GIRLS FROM LOW PROBLEMS OF THE GIRLS FROM LOW SOCIO-ECONOMIC COMMUNITIES IN SOCIO-ECONOMIC COMMUNITIES IN
PUNEPUNE
Is there a course I can attend to learn
such skills? After all I have to raise my own
family some day.
Unfortunately we do not have the financial
means to educate ourselves.

To address this serious issue, we have started a new project called ...
GIRLS MOVING FORWARDGIRLS MOVING FORWARD
This name has been inspired by SI Truckee Meadows’ Project: Women Moving Forward
Our aim is to educate and empower girls from low socio-economic communities with life skills by our very own Soro Sisters of Pune Metro East
We have so far conducted two interactive workshops for underprivileged girls,
aged 12 to 16 years, partnering with
Deep Griha Society and ASHA
GIRLS MOVING FORWARDGIRLS MOVING FORWARD
Our members facilitated life skills such as grooming, hygiene, health, first aid, creative skills, home budgeting and premarital counseling
Conducted dedicated sessions on combating domestic violence effectively to build confidence
GIRLS MOVING FORWARDGIRLS MOVING FORWARD
Each workshop had an attendance of about 25 girls
SI PME provided materials for the girls’ creative skills session and catered for their snacks and refreshments
Certificates were awarded to all those who attended the workshop
Active participants received rewards

I am thankful for having this
opportunity to learn to make and paint oil
lamps. Such workshops can hone
my creative skills.
I wish my relatives and friends could
attend similar workshops and
benefit from such sessions.
Such workshops will most definitely help us move forward in
life.
The certificates we received will
encourage others to join.

Phew! There is so much tension at home. The anger
management session will help me to handle
the situation.
I am relieved that questions which I
cannot ask my mom can now be
answered by Dr. Anupama.
Yes! I’m sure that the paper bag making
session will help me supplement my family’s income.
The Road Ahead: Goals for the futureTo conduct monthly workshops over 3 years at various rural and urban locations in and around Pune to help more underprivileged girlsTo provide assistance with schooling, career counseling, personality development and interviewee skillsTo impart skills that will enable them to be self-sustainableTo raise the socio-economic status of these girlsTo continue to improve the workshops through continuous feedback and ensure that the best is imparted
