Name: John SuifaluVillage: Raubabate village, North MalaitaPosition / Role: CLTS FacilitatorTime in this roll: 1 month What are the main activities you do to on sanitation and hygiene? After CLTS Training held at Malu’u beginning November, 2016, I went out to 5 villages in my cluster and carried out Triggering with my other facilitators.. I continued to oversee monitoring in my village and as well as assisting my Fellow facilitators to monitor sanitation to ensure progress towards No Open Defecation status happen quickly. How do you ensure that women and people with disabilities are included? We are ensuring that during pre-triggering and triggering process to include women, children and people with disabilities. This is important because speaking of sanitation means it is every ones business. So women were involved during discussions, shit mapping, transect walk and help children developing songs. What is the biggest change you have seen from your work? After triggering villages people began to build toilets in just a week. Others who have existing ones opted to push for more improved ones. People are really working hard even over this Christmas season. They have realised and convinced that putting shit (toko) properly away in latrines could solve some of our household problems. We are expecting house flies to reduce in our village in the coming weeks. What advice do you have for others? As one CLTS facilitator, I came to realise that CLTS program if we are serious about it can certainly improve our lifestyle. Even if you have a good housing structure and still using bush, sea and streams for defecation (siti), I believe you missed one very important thing in life. So your backyard must really be kept clean and have proper toilet. Community with good sanitation in place is a Healthy Community. My advice is that please ACCEPT CLTS when it comes to you.
Welcome to the month of November. We were very pleased to share with you the progress of CLTS in Western Province. After months of monitoring by provincial team, we finally made a Surprise Visit as a back-up tool to encourage them move forward. It will be likely that 1-2 villages are ready to call for Verification status early next year. Some of our stakeholder partners are also shaping up as well. Red Cross, Live & Learn, and Water Aid will be or are calling for Verification status soon. We are proud to assist where ever possible and to work together with you.As we are moving towards the end of the year, lets us as partners in CLTS program look with confidence and to move forward. The challenges that this year has brought we believe can give us opportunities to learn and improve in 2017 and beyond. Some of you are shaping up for Christmas Vacations, May we take this chance to wish you all the best where ever you spend your time with you families.
If you would like any more information about CLTS, or how to get involved, please contact us at the National RWASH Unit on 21805. Tanggio toomasi!
