Treasure Hill is a community in Taipei,
Taiwan. Originally an illegal settlement,
it was founded by the Kuomintangmilitary veterans at the end of 1940s
and served originally as an anti-aircraftposition.
The community has been featured in
The New York Times as one of Taiwansmust-see destinations.
Treasure Hill is the attic of Taipei carry-ing the memories, stories and traditions
of the past generations. In some way itis a reection of the Taipei mind that the
industrial city is not able to reect. Forthe stories to surface the industrial city

The Taipei City Department of Cultual
Affairs has also listed the 44 South
Village, the rst military dependentsvillage in Taipei City, as historic buildings
and transformed it into the Xinyi PublicAssembly Hall in 2003, making it acces-
sible to all visitors and tourists.
The old buildings of the 44 South Villagehave been turned into feature shops and
restaurants.
44 South Village is a good example of
compromise between history preserva-tion and urban renewal. Now the area
has been turned into a tourist attractionwhich houses a number of specialty
stores and restaurants and also of-fers leisure space for residents, ofce
workers and photographers who like tocapture shots of the contrasts between
modern skyscrapers and humble build-ings.
