aBoriGinal acTiviTY cenTreS Each SIAST campus is home to an Aboriginal activity centre. The centres host culturally affirming events for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students and employees. You will also find a number of other services including access to Elders, counselling and advice.

accommoDaTionSHousing registries are available at each campus. The registries are a great help, whether you are looking for an apartment, room-and-board, room only or shared accommodation. Students attending our Regina campus might also have the option of living in residence at the nearby University of Regina campus. Students attending our Prince Albert campus can apply for accommodations in our family housing complex.

BooKSToreSYou can purchase all your textbooks, course manuals, instruments and some supplies from the bookstore at your program’s home campus. You’ll receive an estimate of costs for books and supplies with your acceptance letter and the specific list of books and supplies during registration week. We recommend that you wait until then to purchase them.

cHilD care SIAST campuses in Prince Albert, Regina and Saskatoon offer child care centres. Each centre accommodates children of varying ages in a safe and friendly environment.

WHen SHoulD i aPPlY?You can apply as soon as you are enrolled in the courses and at the grade level you require for admission. For instance, for a program where Grade 12 is an admission requirement, you may apply in September of your Grade 12 year.

Note: The application period for high-demand programs for the next academic year is October 1 to February 15.

HoW Do i aPPlY?You can apply online, in person or by mail. Apply online at goSIAST.com, print a copy of the application form from the website or obtain a paper copy of the application form from any SIAST campus.

Complete the application form and submit it with the required $50 non-refundable application fee. Applicants who apply online must be prepared to pay the application fee by Visa or MasterCard. You may apply for more than one program, but you must submit a separate application form and pay the application fee for each program or program site you apply to.

One of the measures we take to increase opportunities for the designated groups in our Education Equity Program is to reserve a percentage of program seats for applicants from the designated groups. If one (or more) of the designated groups (see page 12) applies to you, please check off the appropriate item(s) on your Application for Admission form.

WHaT elSe Do i neeD To Do?Along with your completed application form and $50 application fee, you will need to include:

• An official transcript of your high school marks. If you have already completed the high school requirements for admission, arrange for an official transcript to be forwarded electronically to us by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education or from the appropriate provincial ministry of education if your requirements were completed outside of Saskatchewan; OR

• A preliminary statement of high school standing. If you are currently completing high school requirements for admission, a conditional admission can be granted based on preliminary results – just complete the preliminary statement of high school standing on the application form. Upon completion of the requirements, you must arrange for a final official transcript to be sent electronically by the appropriate provincial ministry of education. Final official transcripts are required by August 1.

• All other forms required by the program.

High-demand programs have additional selection criteria on top of regular academic admission requirements. All admission requirements are detailed on our program web pages at goSIAST.com.

WHaT HaPPenS nexT?After you are accepted into your program, you will receive an acceptance letter from SIAST letting you know your start date, tuition fees and other costs (such as books, supplies and student association fees). If you are a sponsored student, your sponsoring agency will need to provide us with written confirmation of your sponsorship.

In your acceptance letter, we will ask you to pay a $300 tuition deposit within 30 days to hold your spot in the program, so plan that cost into your budget when you apply.

If you are not offered a seat in the program to which you apply, you will be required to reapply to the next year’s intake. Please visit our website for additional details.

WHaT iF i Do noT meeT THe aDmiSSion reQuiremenTS? If you do not meet admission requirements, you have several options:

• If you have been out of school for at least one year you can upgrade through a Basic Education program at SIAST (see page 53) or through your high school or community regional college.

• You may qualify for special admission. Contact a SIAST counsellor at any campus for details. Special admission may include:

– use of an assessment tool called ACCUPLACER that tests math and English skills, and/or

– consideration of previously completed certificates, diplomas and degrees from recognized post-secondary institutions.

• You may be able to begin your studies as a part-time, unclassified student. Unclassified students are students who are registered in a SIAST course but who are not currently admitted to a SIAST program.

Note: Because English is the language of instruction and examination at SIAST, applicants whose first or primary language is not English will need to provide evidence of sufficient English skills as an admission requirement. Contact a SIAST counsellor for more information or visit goSIAST.com and click Admission & Registration – English Language Requirement.

I’ve always been interested in what

makes people tick... and what induces them

to buy.

meagan.Meagan MacLean knows just how challenging it can be to find your way after high school. She bartended, waited tables, worked in retail and did a year of university. Then, at 24, she enrolled in SIAST’s Business program (“I needed to be doing something”), never expecting it would lead to a permanent, full-time “dream” job in marketing.

The job offer came in her second year at SIAST during her co-op placement as a marketing assistant with MNP, a national chartered accounting and business consulting firm. “I didn’t think SIAST would have such high-calibre co-op placements. That speaks to its reputation in the business community.”

At MNP, she juggled everything from market research and strategic planning to event coordination and ad campaign creation. When she graduated recently, she packed her bags (again!) and returned to the firm as a regional marketing coordinator, having finally found her niche.

Meagan attributes her success, in part, to knowing more about herself and her learning style. “I’ve always worked well in small classes, and I like being held accountable. At SIAST, all of my teachers knew me by name. I felt I had to push myself to bring out what I knew they saw in me.”

Mkevin.Growing up on the family farm, Kevin Dahlsjo had never cooked a meal before high school. Then, a home economics course whetted his appetite for cooking, so he enrolled in SIAST’s Professional Cooking program a couple of years later.

Today, Kevin is head chef and owner of Two by Dahlsjo, a cozy 26-seat restaurant in Prince Albert, where the farm-fresh menu changes weekly. He also runs Sublime Catering and still finds time to “have a life,” which includes getting married and the occasional game of golf or baseball.

Kevin’s a laid-back guy, but, as an entrepreneur who watches his bottom line, he knows just how important it is to accurately cost out food. He learned that skill at SIAST, and more. “The chefs – the instructors – at SIAST were top-notch. They’d all worked in the industry and at some amazing places. They guided me in the right direction.”

Clearly so. Last year, Western Living magazine dubbed him one of the “Top 40 Foodies Under 40” to watch.

And, for three consecutive years, Kevin has been chosen as one of Saskatchewan’s top 10 chefs to compete in Gold Medal Plates’ Canadian Culinary Championships.

Through the prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR) process, you can seek academic credit for the knowledge you’ve already gained through life and work experiences. PLAR considers a variety of ways people learn, such as: • independent study • volunteer work • industry training • workshops • on-the-job training • work experience

TranSFer creDiTSTransfer credits are the educational equivalent of two-for-the-price-of-one. They allow post-secondary students and graduates to pursue additional education in a particular field without going “back to square one.” In some instances, transfer credits mean you can get a degree and a diploma in as little as four years.

These are some of the benefits of transfer credits:

• Greater flexibility: Diploma programs provide practical training, which gives you marketable skills in two years. Whether or not you pursue additional education, you’ll have in-demand job skills.

When Ché Freistadt enrolled in SIAST’s Telecommunications/Radio Systems Technician program it was supposed to be a stepping stone to university. But he quickly got hooked on the hands-on courses, which tapped into his natural curiosity. “I like to figure out how stuff works. I loved the program.” So much so that he went on to complete the advanced certificate in SIAST’s Telecommunications/Radio Systems Technician program.

Program highlights included making a robot and an AM/FM radio. “I soldered, I built, I drilled and practised hand-eye coordination – something you can’t learn from sitting in a classroom listening to an instructor.”

He also appreciated the camaraderie of small classes. “We were a tight-knit group. We had an Ultimate Frisbee team. And there were days when we’d break out into song,” he says, recalling a particularly memorable take on “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

After he graduated, job offers were plentiful. Ché is now an engineer assistant with SaskTel, where he designs and purchases elements for core networks. He hopes to one day land a position in the company’s test lab.

kSIAST’s Commercial Pilot program is offered in partnership with the Saskatchewan Aviation Council. You’ll alternate ground school training with actual flying experience at your home flying school. The Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists’ Canadian Technology Accreditation Board accredits our Engineering Technology programs at the technologist level. After two years of suitable experience, graduates are also eligible for membership in the Saskatchewan Applied Science Technologists and Technicians as applied science technologists. Some programs offer career opportunities with the Canadian Forces; Electronics Systems graduates are eligible for the Subsidized Education Plan for Naval Technicians.

Check out your options, from emergency care to continuing care, dental hygiene to health information management, pharmacy technician to medical laboratory technology and more.

Go FurTHerMany of our Health Services graduates are eligible to pursue industry certification or licensure. Some programs let you transfer into university degree programs. Other programs are modular, which gives you marketable skills without committing to all levels of the program. Our paramedic programs, for example, let you begin with Primary Care Paramedic and work through the advanced level once you’ve been in the workforce.

• Zero to career in two years or less – SIAST Health Services programs range from one-year certificates to two-year diplomas, with a significant amount of that time spent in practical settings. It’s part of SIAST’s hands-on approach to learning.

In Aboriginal Police Preparation, you will learn about basic investigative techniques, the criminal justice system and criminal law, while getting practical training in basic firearms, CPR and interpersonal communications. You will also explore the important issues – addictions, family violence, suicide intervention and more.

Correctional Studies is a diploma program that prepares you for a career with correctional institutions and justice agencies. This well-rounded program provides a strong foundation in both federal and provincial corrections. You’ll learn to manage conflict, aggression and violence; apply dynamic and static security skills; and better understand the role of community corrections, youth justice initiatives and restorative justice.

Indigenous Peacekeeping and Victim Services Coordination are new programs, designed in consultation with communities around the province. Indigenous Peacekeeping will prepare you for work in community law enforcement or community justice in First Nations communities. Victim Services Coordination provides the knowledge and skills necessary to work with victims of crime, providing advocacy, information, assistance and referrals.

aPPrenTiceSHiP TraininG An apprenticeship is a formal agreement between an individual who wants to learn a skill and an employer who needs a skilled worker.

Apprenticeship training is an earning while learning arrangement for a required term. Under the supervision of a certified journeyperson, an apprentice receives knowledge and develops skills associated with a designated trade through on-the-job training.

The skills you learn on the job are supplemented with a required number of weeks of technical training each year.

Upon successfully completing an apprenticeship program, you are eligible to write an examination to become a certified journeyperson in the trade.

aPPrenTiceSHiP conTracTYou may enter into an apprenticeship contract (become indentured) if you:• are 16 years old or older• have the proper educational requirements• are engaged in a designated trade (either as an employee,

employer or self-employed shop owner)

When designated, the apprenticeship contract is registered with the provincial government.

When you want more control over your life, your job prospects and your earning potential, start with SIAST’s Basic Education (BE) programs. SIAST’s BE programs help students who want to develop academic and job-readiness skills (as required by the labour market), and gain the academic pre-requisites required for further education and training.

We have the widest range of BE programs in the province – and all provide a supportive adult learning environment. You have access to student counsellors, tutors and a full range of student services. After successfully completing your BE program, you can consider laddering into one of SIAST’s post-secondary programs.

Basic Education programs focus on helping students who want to: • develop academic and job-readiness skills • gain the academic pre-requisites needed for further education

and training

To qualify for admission, you must be either: • 18 years of age and out of school for at least one year, OR • 19 years of age or older

Because Basic Education academic programs are secondary school programs, they do not qualify for the student loan program in Saskatchewan. However, you may qualify for the Provincial Training Allowance, which is paid monthly to qualified students who attend daytime classes. Programs are available on a full- and/or part-time basis.

aDulT 10The Adult 10 program builds basic academic skills and encourages the development of employment readiness as well as living and social skills. These skills enable you to meet the demands of the labour market and/or pursue further training.

Studies include: • math • computer literacy • reading • writing • science • social studies

You will also complete a career exploration class that looks at employment skills and career options. The program starts at various times throughout the year.

aDulT 12 The Adult 12 program provides the skills and entrance qualifications you need to enrol in post-secondary institutions and succeed in the labour market. Adult 12 standing is recognized by the Ministry of Education as equivalent to the Saskatchewan 24-credit high school Grade 12. Adult 12 offers Saskatchewan 30-level curricula. Adult 12 standing is awarded after successful completion of the seven required 30-level credits or equivalent, including prior learning credit.

English language training opportunities are available on a full-time basis at SIAST Kelsey Campus in Saskatoon and SIAST Wascana Campus in Regina, and on a part-time basis at all four campuses. These programs are designed for students who wish to improve their English language skills for either personal development, admission to post-secondary studies or improving employment opportunities.
