Chairman’s Report - August 2016 by David Tomlinson

August ends the busy period for the branch, with the last eight weeks having taken in the Swap Meet, twomidweek runs, two club nights, the national VCC AGM in Rotorua, and the Sulphur City Rally, along with a few other interspersed events including assisting with Daffodil Day.

Winter is gone, and daylight savings will start soon, so hopefully we can see a few more of the older cars out and about as it warms up. Last months “car in the room” was Angie Brunton’s Morris Traveller which attracted much attention including before and after the meeting. It has been good to have a car each month so far this year, and I thank those members who have brought their cars along. If you would like to display your car (or motorbike!) in the room on club night and give a short talk on the model and its marque, please contact me. We still have a gap or two this year.

September sees things back to the usual club night and one Sunday and one mid-week run, but there is still the 4 day Spring Tour at the very beginning of November and the Lakefront Car Show in January in our upcoming calendar. It is also likely the branch will have a social night closer to Christmas at the clubrooms.

We have had a very limited amount of interest in the Bedford K truck from within the branch, but we have had some interest from outside the branch from VCC members who have seen it in Side Curtains (which anyone can read online). We will have one more viewing day on September 24th to give any branch members who wish to view the truck a chance to see it and hopefully its future can be determined some time in October.

My family are taking two vehicles to “Brits At The Beach” in Whangamata at the end of September, I did see a few other branch members there last year. This year I finally got a bach across the road from the main venue only to have the Council re-grass Williamson Park and force organisers to move most events to the other side of town. Oh well, at least the kids are close to the beach...

See you at a club night or event soon.

Club Captain’sReport

by Angie Brunton

The Rotorua branch had a very busy month in August, we hosted the New Zealand Vintage Car Club AGM. It was great to catch up with members from the other branches around the country and also the executive members. I particularly enjoyed meeting with Andrew Anderson who was one of the founding members of our club and is an inspiration to us all. I would like to thank those members that helped with the organisation and also those who helped out at the weekend. It was great that members were able to take their club cars to the airport and act as chauffeurs for those members arriving in Rotorua by plane.

I have had several members tell me how much they enjoyed the talk that Greeta Hulme gave on the Saturday evening. So thank you Greeta for giving up your time do do this. It was also good to see our life member/Patron Bob Mowbray in attendance.

Also this month members of the branch were involved in the delivery of daffodils for the annual Cancer Society fundraising Daffodil Day. I would like to thank those members who participated and encourage other members to perhaps think about volunteering next year. If we could get a couple more cars then the Cancer Society would not have to pay a courier to deliver to the industrial areas of town.

Our annual Sulphur City Rally was also held end at the end of the month, I’m sure there will be a write up about it soon. Everyone who participated enjoyed the hangi lunch provided by Rotoma School. I think Doug handled the road closure incident very well and I didn’t hear anybody complain about it. So well done to the team that put on the rally.

This month’s club run will be a touring run to the Waitoa area to see an interesting collection and have a picnic lunch. I am away till the 16th so assistant club captain Kevin Scott has this in hand.

See you on the 18th, happy motoring, Angie

Malcolm Foster’s Model T Ford after the VCC AGM trailered up to the Wickham’s Toyota Corolla. It was driven out of the hotel, which was a bit easier than its entrance. On the morning of the AGM it was below zero and it would not start, so had to be pushed some distance through the hotel to get it into place.

Bedford K truck “Open Day 2”24 September 2016 - 14 Hall Rd, Ngongotaha

The branch will host a second “Open Day” for members to come and peruse the 1953 Bedford Model K truck we have been gifted between 9.00am and 10.30 am on Saturday, September 24th. This is the weekend after the club run to Waitoa. The viewing will be at 14 Hall Rd, Ngongotaha, a yellow coloured commercial building opposite the 4 Square a little further up the hill. If the weather is good the truck will be outside, but if the weather is poor viewing will be possible under cover. Any members who think they may be interested in being the next “keeper” of the truck with a view to making it road-worthy again will be asked to register their interest as soon as possible to the branch committee.

VCC AGM 2016The branch received the following email after hosting this year’s national VCC AGM and Executive Meeting at the Novotel, Rotorua.I would like to thank the Rotorua Branch for all they did to make the weekend of the Club’s National Annual General Meeting, a success. From picking up of delegates and members from the airport, to the handing out of microphones, registration packs, answering of questions plus all the initial organising of the event and processing of registration forms, and having regular contact with National Office, the task is not a small one and takes volunteers dedicating many hours of their time to it.

Can you please pass on our thanks to all those involved.

Kind RegardsJulie Cairns - GeeAdministration ManagerVCC of NZ - National Office

Other matters of interest discussed at the AGM and Executive meeting include:Vero require clients to notify them of any modification to an insured vehicle which alter the general specification of the original vehicle, especially any performance enhancing modification.

The VCC have employed a Communications and Marketing Officer.

A more detailed financial analysis of the Vero International Rally will be compiled and sent to branches. Many questions regarding the loss could not be addressed as there was not sufficient information in the accounts presented to the meeting.

The change to the disciplinary process for members was adopted.

The possibility of the VCC having a patron in the future was discussed.

The membership application process will have an amendment voted on at the next meeting to remove the need for a proposer and a seconder, as all applications sent to head office have to be signed off by a branch committee.

The John L Goddard Trophy was presented to Diane Ross.

There was discussion regarding changing the vehicle eligibility classifications, partly in naming convention, and also to consider better alignment with the international FIVA classifications. This gained little support, but does appear to have enough legs to be considered again in the future.

I WENT TO A STRIP SHOW by Ronald Mayes

No, not that sort, this was a paint and varnish stripping demonstration by a small firm which does not sell its product in shops (why not?) but goes around the country, hiring premises for each day’s show. In response to the advertising I duly turned up at a bowling club’s lounge with a piece of Triumph dashboard and a section of Vanden Plas door capping, the finish on neither of which would be touched by the Polystrippa or Citristrip in my workshop (Triumph door cappings are easy: those on NZ-assembled cars were made in a factory in Nelson and received just a quick squirk of cheap satin finish, but the instrument panels came, finished, from the U.K..)

At the venue there was quite a strong smell of organic solvents in the air, the presenters wore plastic aprons but no protective gloves or masks and when I asked what was the active ingredient in the product I received a rather mumbled reply that sounded something like “chloro-ethanol” (that’s new to me..) Anyway, it worked well on the Triumph dashboard finish but would not touch the Vanden Plas high-gloss varnish. At $127 for small containers of stripper and neutralizer I decided to keep my wallet deep in my pocket and escaped outside into the fresh air as quickly as possible. At home I looked up the company’s website and could find none of the required material safety data information.

Now, how to strip the old, hard and flaking finish from those panels?

This month, two entirely different cars, no link between them at all. The first has been submitted by a branch member and it is pictured in Auckland many years ago. It is a pre-war American car and shares the name of a US President as its model name. The car below it is coachbuilt on a well known British sports car.

Upcoming Midweek Runs by Bob Mackay

28th September Midweek runMeet at club rooms at 10.00am for morning tea. We will then travel to Arapuni for a picnic lunch at a great spot down by the river or for those that prefer a café lunch at Rhubarb Cafe. Should the weather be unkind then maybe we all have toasted sandwiches for tea and go to the café for lunch.Following lunch we will drive along the river to State Highway 1 and visit Steven & Sheryn Clothier at Corrugated Creations north of Tirau. Sheryn will give us a presentation of their art based business and show making of making of their famous corrugated sculptures. To help cover the time incurred they make a small entry charge.

26th October Midweek runIn October Pat and myself are undertaking a pre-spring tour into the Flinders Ranges. In our absence Maurie Crowe has offered to arrange the mid-week run, Maurie will supply details next month.

Spring Tour 1st – 4th NovemberPresently we have eight cars confirmed for the full tour (tour detailed in last issue of Side Curtains). There is an option for other members to join us for “Behind the scenes of the vehicle collection” at the Waiouru Army Base (cost $15 pp or $25 including the Army Museum) on the morning of Friday 4th. The workshops are within the high security area, for this reason we have to supply the army with details including your vehicle make and registration number at least two weeks before our visit. If attending the Waiouru tour, please ensure that Maurie Crowe has your details by the October club night as I will be absent at that time.

August Midweek ReportMet at the club rooms for morning tea, we then travelled to Paengaroa for lunch at the Convita Café. Following lunch some took advantage of the discounted rate offered to view the very informative display “Discover the world of the Honey Bee” tour. We started our journey with one modern and fifteen club cars, but unfortunately ended with two modern and only fourteen club cars following one misbehaving car being returned home.

COMING EVENTS

An F1 driver and an A35 by Ronald MayesSeeing Roger and Keitha Couchman’s Austin A35 in action on the Sulphur City Rally brought to mind an article in a recent issue of Classic and Sports Car. Today’s Formula One drivers may have private jets and supercars but back in the 1950s it was very different. In 1958 Graham Hill bought a grey Austin A35 to commute in London and to drive to allof the UK and European circuits – and his wife used it for shopping.Externally it appeared standard but under the skin it had a slightly tweaked engine: highcompression pistons, twin SU carburettors and a high-lift camshaft. Harder brake linings and an anti-roll bar were the only running gear modifications but he had an oil pressure gauge and a rev counter to keep track of what was happening in the little 948cc engine. With 3 on board, plus their luggage, he would drive to Monaco, Spa, Le Mans and Reims. Hewould drive for hours on end at 6000rpm, all that would happen would be that oil pressure would drop from 40lb to 30lb. He had removed the fan to get a little more horsepower and if it got too hot he would turn the heater on full and open the windows.By the end of 1958 the car had done 30000 miles. He then fitted a higher ratio diff so he could cruise all day at 85mph and drove the 650 miles from Paris to Monaco at an average speed of 60mph (and there were not many autoroutes, then.) And that’s not all, the A35 was also a racing car: After driving it to the British Grand Prix and Daily Express Trophy races, he entered it in the supporting saloon car races. With it he achieved a class lap record of 73.48 mph – a faster average than a standard A35’s top speed. His approach to cornering at Silverstone was to approach flat out at 90 mph and 6300 rpm (no lifting off the pedal or braking), give half a turn of lock going into the corner to put it in a drift, then back to a quarter turn and hold it through the corner. By that time it was down to 70 mph and 4800 rpm but it would climb up to top speed before the next corner.A photo in the magazine shows it on the circuit “with a heavy list to port and with its narrow road tyres shrieking.” He did use 40 psi in the front tyres and 35 psi in the rear, otherwise the car was just as it was driven to the circuit. What an amazing little car! And an amazingly skilled driver – I have seen an A30 fall over, on Vaughans Road when it had a metal surface, when the driver swerved to avoid a dog!
