On Wednesday, February 14th, SLI celebrated Heritage Day, as well as Valentine’s Day. For Heritage Day, everyone came to school, wearing their traditional clothing. Students presented projects to educated the school about their cultures, and cultural dances were also performed. There was a special Lion Dance performed to celebrate the Lunar New Year, which is coming up on Friday, February 16th. At lunch, we had a big feast, full of different cultural foods brought in by students. For Valentine’s Day, we had a school dance and watched a movie. The dance included a dance-off and karaoke, as well. After that, each class enjoyed their own Valentine’s Day party. A video of the Heritage Day performances will be sent to parents, next week. Valentines Day and Heritage Day were very memorable and we look forward to celebrating, again, next year.

Modern Technology: Is it good?... Or is it bad?... ~
Many people have different opinions on modern technology. We went out to get the opinions of the young students of Sidney Ledson Institute. Ten-year-old Yasmin says that she thinks modern tech is taking away from healthy activities and that people of the 21st century should actually go outside. She gave the supporting example that you get vitamin D from the sun, which you would not get from staying inside with distracting new tech. Yasmin also argues that new tech keeps children from getting exercise, which was something children used to get through classic pastimes, such as Jump Rope. Yasmin makes good points, however, some students have a more positive outlook on technology. Nine-year-old Yeri is a supporter of technology, and gave an example of how technological progress has improved children’s entertainment options. Yeri gave the example that long ago, television had black and white programming, but now, when you turn on your T.V. to watch your favourite show, you can enjoy it in vivid colour. There are pros and cons to technology, and hearing both views, we recommend a balance of technology use and outdoor activity. -by Jade Cheung

Trends
Recently, at SLI, Pokemon has been quite a popular trend. If you are not sure what Pokemon is, it is an imaginary world made popular by a Japanese cartoon, and it involves creatures with different powers that battle, often trained by humans for sport. Based on the show, there are a series of cards that children use for battle simulations and trading. There is also a Pokemon video game that many students enjoy playing. The world of Pokemon is fascinating and the games are enjoyed by students of all ages.

Sports
Dodgeball is a popular sport at SLI. Here’s how you can set up and play dodgeball with your friends:
In dodgeball you will need a ball and 2 benches. An ideal space to play would be a gym or large empty room. The two benches should be placed along the lengths of two opposite sides of the room, about 3 feet from the walls. You must divide yourselves into two teams. . Each team will occupy a space upto the halfway point between the two benches. The objective for each team is to to throw the ball at members of the opposite team,in a non-violent manner below the waist. If a ball hits an opposing team member, that member must go to the bench behind the team that hit them and make an attempt to catch a ball their teammates will throw to them. These behind-the-bench players must try to hit the opposing team players, which will free them of their bench position. To win, a team must have all members of the opposing team off the opposing side of the court.

This winter has been dominated by a nasty bug, called the flu. The flu, or

Here are some symptoms of the flu: · Fever · Cough · Sore throat · Runny nose · Muscle or body aches · Headaches · Fatigue Sometimes, vomiting and diarrhea are also a symptoms; these symptoms are more common in children than adults.

something that the flu-carrier has touched, due to the spread of germs. Fortunately, the flu is preventable. Here are some ways you can prevent yourself from getting the flu:
· Avoid close contact with sick people . Wash your hands daily, with soap and water.
· Go to your doctor or a pharmacy and ask for a flu shot. · Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth ; germs spread this way. · Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated
with germs like those of the flu. · Use disinfectant hand gels.
