Today, vacuum as an arc
extinguishing medium pro-
vides the most cost-effective
solution for medium-voltage
circuit-breakers. We have op-
timized the vacuum switching
principle to the extent that it
is superior to conventional
technology in all respects.
The most significant
advantages:
Constant dielectric in a
vacuum, there are no decom-
position products and,
because the vacuum inter-
rupter is hermetically sealed,
there are no environmental
influences on it.
Constant contact resistance
the absence of oxidation in
a vacuum keeps the metal
contact surfaces clean. For
this reason, contact resistance
can be assured to remain low
throughout the service life of
the equipment.
Large total current the rated
normal current can be inter-
rupted up to 30,000 times,
and the short-circuit breaking
current an average of 50
times.
Maintenance-free for life
Throughout its entire service
life, the vacuum interrupter
operates reliably at all times
without any form of mainte-
nance. Wear is minimal,
because for instance vacuum
switching requires no cooling.
The arc voltage is thus ex-
tremely low only 20 to 200 V.And, on account of the short
arcing times of max. 15 ms,
the energy consumption in
the contact gap is very low.
That makes for maximum
availability.
Principle of operation
A metal-vapor arc discharge
is initiated by the current to
be interrupted as the contact
pieces open. Current flows
through this metal-vaporplasma until the next current
zero. The arc extinguishes in
the vicinity of the current zero.
The metal vapor loses its con-
ductivity within a few micro-
seconds this very quickly
re-establishes the dielectric
strength of the contact gap.
Depending on the level of the
breaking current, various
contact shapes and sizes are
used:
Radial magnetic field contacts,
with which the arc burns
diffusely up to about 10 kA.
Higher currents burn across
a contracted arc, which is
rotating on the contacts.
Axial magnetic field contacts,
with which the arc remains
diffuse even with high
current levels up to 80 kA.

Vacuum Circuit-Breakers for Outdoor Applications
The 3AF01 circuit-breaker isespecially suitable for opera-tion in power supply utilitiesand deals with all switchingduties occurring in distributionsystems up to 36 kV. It con-sists of two modules:The lower module comprisesthe steel structure with theoperating mechanism, and theupper module the cross armwith the circuit-breaker poles.

3CG Vacuum Switches
The 3CG vacuum switchesare multi-purpose switchesconforming to IEC 60265-1and VDE 0670 Part 301.
With these, all loads can beswitched without any restric-tion and with a high degreeof reliability. The electrical andmechanical data are greaterthan for conventional switch-disconnectors. Moreover, the3CG are maintenance-free.
The vacuum switch is there-fore extremely cost-effective.
3CG switches in combinationwith HV HRC-Fuses complywith IEC 60420 and VDE0670 Part 303, when in-stalled in Siemens switch-gear. Maximum ratings forfuses on requests.

3D disconnecting and earth-ing switches are suitable forindoor installations up to36 kV.
Disconnecting switches areused mainly to protect per-sonnel working on equip-ment, and must therefore beextremely reliable and safe.This is assured even underdifficult climatic conditions,for example in the event of
occasional moisture conden-sation.
For 12 and 24 kV, make-proofearthing switches with a ratedshort-circuit making currentof 50 or 40 kA have been in-cluded in the range.
