PROFIBUS is a powerful, open and rugged bus system that ensures prob-lem-free communication.

The system is fully stan-dardized which enables problem-free connection of standardized compo-nents from different manu-facturers.

Configuration, startup and troubleshooting can be per-formed from any point on the network. This means that the freely selectable communi-cation links are extremely flexible, easy to implement and easy to modify.

IntroductionProcess or field communication

Communication functions Process or field communi-cation (PROFIBUS DP, PROFIBUS PA) is used to connect actuators/sensors in an automation, HMI® or management system.Connection can take place through integrated interfaces on the CPU or interface mod-ules (IMs) and communica-tions processors (CPs).

In the case of modern, high-performance automa-tion systems it is often more practical to connect several PROFIBUS DP lines to one automation system, not only to increase the number of I/O devices which can be con-nected, but also to allow han-dling of individual product areas independently of each other (segment formation). The IEC 61158/EN 50170 standard PROFIBUS offers a powerful, open and rug-ged field bus system with short response times and the following protocols:

PROFIBUS DP(Distributed I/O) serves to connect distributed I/O's, e.g.SIMATIC ET 200 with very fast response times according to standard IEC 61158/EN 50170.

PROFIBUS PA(Process automation) expands PROFIBUS DP with the intrinsically safe transmis-sion system according to the international standard IEC 61158-2.

IntroductionProcess or field communication

Communication functions(continued)

PROFIBUS DP/PA is used to connect field devices such as distributed I/O devices or to connect drives to automation systems such as SIMATIC S7 or PCs.PROFIBUS DP/PA is used when actuators/sensors are widely distributed in the machine or in the system (e.g. field level) and can be grouped in one station (e.g. ET 200) (>16 inputs/outputs).

In this case, the actuators and sensors are connected to field devices. The field devices are supplied with output data in accordance with the master/ slave procedure and supply the input data to the controller or PC.

Powerful tools such as STEP 7 and COM PROFIBUS are available for configuring and parameterizing the distributed I/O devices. These tools can be used for testing and star-tup from any connection point through PROFIBUS DP.

IntroductionProcess or field communication

DP device types PROFIBUS DP distinguishes between two different master classes and various DP func-tionalities:

DP master Class 1A Class 1 DP master is the central component in the case of PROFIBUS DP. The central controller or PC exchanges information with distributed stations (DP slaves) in a defined, repetitive message cycle.

DP master Class 2Devices of this type (program-ming devices, configuration devices or operating devices) are used on startup, on con-figuring the DP system or for operating the system during normal operation (e.g. diag-nostics). A Class 2 DP master can read, for example, the input, output, diagnosis and configuration data of the slaves.

DP slaveA DP slave is an I/O device that reads input information and supplies output informa-tion to the I/O. The quantity of input and output information depends on the type of device and can be up to 244 byte. The functional scope of Class 1 and 2 DP masters and of DP slaves can vary in extent. A communications processor can be accordingly powerful and useful.

DP V0The DP master functions (DP V0) are: configuration, param-eterization, reading input data and writing outputs in cyclic mode, and reading diagnostic data.

DP V1The additional DP functional expansions (DPV V1) enable execution of non-cyclic read and write functions and alarm acknowledgement parallel to cyclic data traffic. These extended DP functions also include non-cyclic access to the parameters and measured values of a slave (e.g. field devices of the process auto-mation, intelligent HMI devices. This type of slave has to be supplied with exten-sive parameter data during startup and normal operation. The non-cyclic transmitted data (e.g.parameterization data) are changed very rarely in comparison with the cyclic measured values and are transmitted with low priority parallel to the fast cyclic use-ful data transfer. The interrupt acknowledgement in the mas-ter ensures reliable transmis-sion of the interrupts from the DP slaves.

DP V2The DP master functions (DP V2) are: cycle synchronization and direct data exchange between DP slaves.

Cycle synchronizationCycle synchronization is achieved by using an equidis-tant clock signal on the bus system. This cyclic, equidis-tant clock pulse is sent as a global control message frame from the master to all stations. The master and slaves are thus able to synchronize their applications with this signal. The functions "Sync" and "Freeze" are used to freeze the input and output data at the moment of the clock pulse and to transmit them in the next cycle. For typical drive applications the jitter of the clock signal from cycle to cycle is required to be less than 1 µs.

Direct data exchange between DP slavesThe publisher/subscriber model is used to implement direct slave-to-slave traffic. Slaves designated as publish-ers make their input data (equivalent to a response frame to its own master) avail-able to other slaves – the sub-scribers – for reading. Slave-to-slave communication takes place in cyclic mode.

IntroductionData communication

Communication functions Data communication (e.g. PROFIBUS FMS) is used for exchanging information between programmable controllers or between a programmable controller and intelligent partners (PCs, computers, etc.).For this purpose the following communication functions are provided:

PG/OP communicationThis comprises integrated communication functions which are used by the SIMATIC automation systems to exchange data with HMI devices (e.g. TD, OP) and SIMATIC PG (STEP 7). The PG/OP communication is sup-ported by MPI, PROFIBUS and Industrial Ethernet networks.

S7 routingS7 routing supports PG/OP communication between networks.

S7 communicationThe S7 communication is the integrated communication function which has been opti-mized in SIMATIC S7/C7.It is also used for interfacing to PCs and workstations. The quantity of useful data per task can be up to 64 KB.S7 communication provides simple, powerful communica-tion services and a network-independent software inter-face for MPI, PROFIBUS and Industrial Ethernet networks.

S5-compatible communica-tion (SEND/RECEIVE)The SEND/RECEIVE interface (in the case of PROFIBUS, through FDL) is optimized for communication between SIMATIC S5 and S7 control-lers and therefore facilitates migration from SIMATIC S5, SIMATIC S7 controllers and PCs through PROFIBUS and Industrial Ethernet.

Standard communicationThis concerns the standard-ized protocols for data com-munication.

• PROFIBUS FMS(Field Bus Message Specification)is ideally suitable for com-munication between differ-ent automation systems (e.g. PLC, PC) from different manufacturers in the cell range with a few stations (max.16). Communication to field devices equipped with an FMS interface is also possible.

With the FMS READ, WRITE and INFORMATION REPORT services, an appli-cation program has read or write access to variables of the communication partner or may transmit its own vari-able values to a communica-tion partner. Partial access to variables is supported. Communication is handled through non-cyclic con-nections (master/master, master/slave), non-cyclic connections with slave initia-tive or cyclic connections (master/slave). Using INFORMATION REPORT, it is also possible to send a mes-sage to all other nodes in the network through a broadcast service. The FMS IDENTIFY (request-ing the identification features of the partner) and STATUS (requesting the partner's status) services may also be initiated.

OPC serverThe basic principle of OPC (OLE for Process Control) is that OPC client applications can communicate with the OPC server through a stan-dard/open and thus multi-vendor interface.OPC servers are supplied with the communication software.

System connections Communications processors (CPs) that have already imple-mented the communication functions in the firmware

and thus relieve some of the load on the terminal by com-munication tasks (e.g. flow control, blocking etc.) are available for many terminals.

IntroductionTopologies

Electrical network Siemens offers a wide range of PROFIBUS network compo-nents for the electrical and optical transmission technol-ogy.PROFIBUS is standardized according to IEC 61158/ EN 50170 for universal automation (PROFIBUS FMS and PROFIBUS DP) and according to IEC 61158-2 for process automation (PROFIBUS PA).

Electrical network The electrical network uses

a shielded, twisted-pair ca-ble. The RS 485 interface operates on voltage differ-ences. It is therefore less sensitive to interference than a volt-age or current interface. In PROFIBUS the nodes are connected to the bus through a bus terminal or a bus connector (max. 32 nodes per segment).

Individual segments are connected through repeaters.

Transmission rates may be selected in steps between 9.6 kbit/s and 1.5 Mbit/s.Additional transmission rates of 3, 6 and 12 Mbit/s according to IEC 61158/EN 50170 are available for extremely time-critical PROFIBUS DP applications.

The maximum segment length depends on the transmission rate.

The electrical network can be configured as a bus or tree topology (see Fig. 3/11).

For applications in the intrinsically safe area, PROFIBUS PA uses transmission technology according to IEC 61158-2. In this case the transmis-sion rate is 31.25 kbit/s.

Features: High-quality bus cable Transmission method

RS 485 (according to EIA) Bus topology with bus termi-

nals and bus connectors for connecting the PROFIBUS nodes

Transmission method according to IEC 61158/ EN 50170 for universal auto-mation (PROFIBUS FMS/DP) as well as IEC 61158-2 for intrinsically safe areas (PROFIBUS PA)

The DP transmission method of the RS 485 (bit coding through voltage difference signals) is implemented according to IEC 61158-2 (bit coding through current signals) through the network components (DP/PA coupler or DP/PA link)

Simple, system-wide mount-ing and grounding concept

 Simple installation.

IntroductionTopologies

Optical network The fiber-optic cable version of PROFIBUS has the follow-ing properties:

– The data transmission link is insensitive to electro-magnetic interference

– Suitable for wide ranges– Galvanic isolation– Either plastic, PCF or

glass fiber-optic conduc-tors can be implemented

Optical PROFIBUS with OLMsAn optical network can be constructed in a bus, ring or star topology using Optical Link Modules (OLMs).The maximum distance between two OLMs can be up to 15 km. The transmission rate can be adjusted in steps from 9.6 kbit/s to 12 Mbit/s.

Optical PROFIBUS with integrated interface and OBTThe optical PROFIBUS with integrated interface and OBT is configured in line topology. A cost-optimized solution in the form of devices with integrated optical interface is available for this.Data terminals with RS 485 interfaces can be connected through an Optical Bus Termi-nal (OBT). The maximum dis-tance between two stations is 50 m with plastic fiber-optic cables. Special fiber-optic cables are available for cover-ing distances up to 300 m.

Mixed network Mixed topologies combining electrical and optical network are feasible. The transition between thetwo media is implemented through the OLM.In the communication between the stations on the bus there is no difference between the two-wire and fiber-optic technology.Up to 127 stations may be connected to a PROFIBUS network.

The optical transmission method offers the following advantages: Plastic or glass fiber-optic

cables are insensitive to electromagnetic radiation and make the EMC mea-sures necessary in electrical networks superfluous

In outdoor installations, an additional lightning protec-tion concept is not neces-sary.

The voltage levels on the modules are isolated automatically thanks to the fiber-optic cable properties

Large distance can be covered using fiber-optic cables.

Wireless Link Using the PROFIBUS Infrared Link Module (ILM), one or more PROFIBUS slaves or slave segments can be cou-pled without the need for wires. At a maximum transmission rate of 1.5 Mbit/s and a maxi-mum range of 15 m, commu-nication is possible to moving parts, e.g. to fully automatic transport systems. It can also be used to replace mecha-nisms that are subject to wear (slip rings or slip conductors).

ECOFAST systemIntroduction

Overview

Fig. 3/19 System configuration

ECOFAST (Energy and Com-munication Field Installation System) is a system solution for cabinet-free distribution. It sets new standards for the equipping of machines and plants with automation, switching and drive systems. Extensive distribution and modularization of the installa-tion plus comprehensive diag-nostics as far as the compo-nent level are the central ideas behind ECOFAST.Modern field and power bus systems open up new possi-bilities for mechanical and plant engineering. Distributed systems can be flexibly adapted to various tasks in industrial automation.

ECOFAST is a system solu-tion with an extensive spec-trum of automation, drive and installation components in a high degree of protec-tion.

With ECOFAST, power and data are distributed and transmitted from point to point.

Parameters, control and diagnostics functionalities are transmitted through PROFIBUS and/or AS-Inter-face for the fast startup of current operations and for the elimination of faults.

Configuration time and safety are greatly improved by a configuration tool for the power system layout.

All motor data and diagnos-tics analysis entries are sup-ported for user-friendliness by a parameterization and diagnostic tool.

ECOFAST combines all the components of an automation system with a consistently standardized connection method for data and power. ECOFAST is thus an integral component of Totally Integrated Auto-mation and open for manu-facturers and users alike.

All interfaces in ECOFAST comply with DESINA specifi-cations.

The standardized distribut-ed design in a high degree of protection (IP 65) results in savings during – Configuration– Wiring– Mounting– Startup and– Normal operation.

With ECOFAST it is possible to shorten the time spent on the tendering, planning and calculation of machines and systems:– Modular planning of

machines and systems.– Drawing up tenders by

combining modules which have already been created.

– Faster assembly and mounting.

– Cabinet-free design in a high degree of protection.

– Use of prefabricated and tested functional units.

– Faster on-site mounting.– Smaller system footprints.

ECOFAST enables the fast and troublefree startup of automation and drive sys-tems:– Minimization of sources

of error by using stan-dardized interfaces and plug-in connectors.

– Extensive diagnostics on the device itself and through the bus.

– Enhanced EMC through direct coupling of the switching unit and drive.

Systems maintain a high level of availability thanks to ECOFAST:– Reduction of downtimes

through fast and reliable replacement of devices.

– No interruption of the power bus and field bus when devices are replaced.

– Automatic parameteriza-tion when devices are replaced.

– Extensive status and diagnostics information.

– Transmission of oper-ating parameters (e.g.current values or status messages).

ECOFAST systemHybrid field bus links

Overview • Hybrid field bus links are constructed as cabinet in-lets. They are the interface between the cabinet (IP 20) and the field (IP 65). At the same time they also serve as the junction into the hybrid field bus cable for PROFIBUS DP and the auxil-iary voltages.

• Hybrid field bus links are available in various versions (active/passive):– Inlets for RS485 transmis-

sion systems– Inlets for fiber-optic

systems– Inlets with RS 485/FO

conversion

• The field side is connected through HanBrid connec-tors. The two-channel ver-sion (2 HanBrid) enables the simple integration of IP 20 devices in a switch box or on-site box in the ECOFAST system.

ECOFAST systemSoftware

Overview • The ECOFAST ES engineer-ing tool in ECOFAST sup-ports the configuration of the system's power equipment. It offers the following range of functions:– Graphic power bus

configuration for loads, wiring and switching/protection functions

– Calculating the size of the power bus through auto-matic determination of wiring cross sections and automatic calculation of the size of the switching and protection elements

– Configuration and testing of the power system in accordance with pertinent standards and in compli-ance with the state of the art

– Drawing up documenta-tion: Circuit diagram of the power bus, parts lists and quantity lists

– Operator prompting in the choice of products to be used

• ECOFAST ES greatly short-ens the time required for the system's configuration. Con-figuration is performed with optimized costs; oversized dimensions are avoided. In-ternal test routines enhance the quality of configuration.

• Switch ES is a user-friendly parameterization and diag-nostics tool for starters in the ECOFAST system.

DESINAStandardization of electrical installation

Overview • DESINA (DEcentralized and Standardized INstAllations-technology for machine tools and production systems) describes the standardization of the electrical installation of automatic machine tools and production systems.

• Consistent solutions for distributed concepts for the automotive, supplier and machine tool industry can be implemented with full functional scope using famil-iar field components. Both the interfaces and the func-tions conform to DESINA specifications.

Application Siemens supports this stan-dardization with the ECOFAST system.

The interfaces in ECOFAST (e.g.communications, power) are compliant with the DESINA specifications.

DESINA-compliant products are offered in the ECOFAST system, e.g.with ET 200X/DESINA, the motor starters and the hybrid lines.

Reduction of abundance of different versions

 Reduction of installation costs

 Reduction of installation errors
