Meeting our social responsibilities is not viewed as a separate business activity but is totally integrated into our company’s sustainability strategy.

Our commitment to South Africa has been characterised by more than just the provision of infrastructure that has helped grow the economy; our conduct has always been characterised by responsible behaviour and a desire to see and contribute towards a sustainable social upliftment.

Today, Siemens has a 30% BEE shareholding, with 15% being owned by Sekunjalo Investment Holdings and 15% owned by the Siemens Employee Share Ownership Trust.

Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment

Skills development and job creationWe are proud to be implementing various skills development and educational programmes that are well aligned with the government‘s priorities of developing the skills the country needs and creating jobs for more South Africans.

Lephalale FET College The Limpopo‐based Lephalale FET College attracts a student body of which 25% are female and more than 80% are black. Siemens’ relationship with the college commenced in 2007, as part of its pledge to invest R20 million between 2007 and 2012 through its Technical Artisan Skills Development Investment. Funds have been used to upgrade facilities like equipping eight training workshops to facilitate the training of electrical, fitting, turning, welding and sheet metalworking, as well as one IT training lab.

SAJ Artisan Training Institute Siemens’ support of the SAJ Artisan Training Institute, a 50% black owned SME is also linked to the Technical Artisan Skills Development Investment. Funding from Siemens has enabled the Institute to establish and equip a 600 square meter training workshop, which is used to train students in electrical, fitting, turning, welding, boilermaking and pipefitting. SAJ’s student body is predominantly black, with these students accounting for as much as 90% of all college‐goers.

Innovation in educationThe Mandela School of Science and Technology

The Mandela School of Science and Technology is a collaborative effort between Siemens and the Department of Education. At capacity, the school will provide valuable secondary education to about 700 young learners and has started making a valuable impact to the lives of the families living in the village and surrounding areas.

The inspirational global icon, Nelson Mandela, once said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. Engineering is one of the scarce skills in South Africa and around the world. It’s a skill that should be cultivated in children from an early age. Increasing the appreciation of science, mathematics and technology amongst children is perhaps one of the most meaningful ways we can prepare the youth of today to change the world of tomorrow. Using innovative and sustainable solutions Siemens will create an environment for learners to develop the necessary skills to enter the workplace and contribute to South Africa’s economic development. The project was underpinned by three core pillars: skills development, sustainability and local commitment.
