If you missed the early days of modern winemaking in the Napa Valley, you still have a

chance to slip back in time when wineries were often small, the person pouring you a

taste was the owner or winemaker or both, a friendly dog possibly snoozed contently in

the corner, a board and some oak wine barrels made up the bar, and the wine was often an

experiment that went well. True, you can sometimes still find spots like that in Napa and

Sonoma, but these days they are more the exception than the rule. So what do you do? You

hop in your car and head northeast, that is what. To the Amador area, to Grass Valley andNevada County, to the wineries in and around Placerville and Calaveras.

Even the names of the towns suggest the rugged individualism of the Gold Rush days. Towns

like San Andreas, Angels Camp, Nevada City, Plymouth, Fair Play, Sutter Creek and Sonora. This

was one way to get to the mines, and the main route to Lake Tahoe still goes right past Placerville,

which has a wealth of history in its own right.

Situated near Stockton and Lodi and not far from the interstate highways that run into and

out of the Golden States capital, Sacramento, it is an easy drive, either as a day trip or for a two-

or three-day visit. As the wines of these areas have taken on greater prominence, more hotels,

inns and bed and breakfasts have come into being, along with some particularly fine restaurants.

For years the wines from here that most people knew about were Zinfandels, but now there

are a whole host of familiar varietals like Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah along

with some slightly exotic plantings, such as Roussanne, Marsanne and Mourvedre, and the more

recognizable Grenache and Viognier. Grapes associated with the Rhne seem to thrive in this

area, and the wines they go into are wonderful examples of the varietal characteristics.

There are dozens of wineries to fill out any oenophiles itinerary, and many of them are

grouped around certain towns. Wineries such as Twisted Oak, Brice Station, Ironstone and

Stevenot in Murphys (and Irish Vineyards in Vallecito). Nevada City Winery and Pilot Peak areboth in the Grass Valley to the north.

One could easily spend two long days in the Amador area, stopping by Stonehouse,

Renwood, Bray, Wilderotter, Story Winery, Nine Gables, Deaver Vineyards, Amador Cellars and

Cooper Vineyards (all in Plymouth) and Sutter Ridge Winery in Sutter Creek. And who could

resist visiting a town named Fair Play, not far from Placerville in the El Dorado area, where the

Charles B. Mitchell Winery and Winery by the Creek sit?

If new discoveries excite you, if beautiful and often dramatic scenery and a sense of history

are a part of what you look for in a journey, if the thought of getting a glance of what the earlier

years of Northern California winemaking must have been like, a visit to this part of the state is

not just a suggestion, it is almost a requirement for anyone who wants to expand their knowl-

edge and understanding of what winemaking is really like. And yes, there might very well be the

owner or his son, wife, daughter or a friend pouring tastes, there might really be a sleeping

dog in the corner, but no matter the level of sophistication or the appearance of the winery (and

there are some beautiful new ones) you can be assured of one thing: you are going to sample

some unique and often truly spectacular wines from this, the wine path less traveled.

Located forty miles east of Sacramento, Californias state capitol, pictur-esque Amador County is the epicenter of the historic Sierra Foothills wine

region. With sun-bathed hillside vineyards dating back to Gold Rush days,

it produces many of Americas heartiest red wines. Renowned especially

for robust Zinfandel, Amador also crafts superb Syrah, Sangiovese,

Barbera, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Port-style wines. Its 35 small,

family wineries offer gracious hospitality, complimentary tasting and, in

many cases, scenic picnic facilities. www.amadorwine.com

Calaveras County, which occupies the southern third of the Sierra FoothillsAmerican Viticultural Area, was at the epicenter of Californias Gold Rush.

French and Italian prospectors drawn to the region soon realized that its

sunny slopes and red clay soils were ideal for winegrowing. Today, Calav-

eras thriving wine scene, centered around the charming town of Murphys,

boasts 19 wineries producing an eclectic assortment of wines ranging

from Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon to Tempranillo and Verdelho.

In 1870, El Dorado County was the third-largest wine region in California.Today, this charming Sierra Foothills wine destination boasts more than 40

wineries and 2,000-plus vine acres, most situated between 1,200 and

3,600 feet above sea level. These high elevation vineyards enjoy cooler

temperatures than other Sierra Foothills wine regions, allowing growers to

successfully cultivate over 50 different grape varieties, from Sierra

Foothills specialties like Zinfandel and Syrah to Cabernet Sauvignon,

    Merlot, Chardonnay and Riesling. www.eldoradowines.org

under three hours from the San

    Francisco Bay Area, its mountain

vineyards are blessed by warm, sunny days, cooling afternoon

breezes and chilly nights, an ideal

    combination for producing fully

    ripened grapes with crisp acidity.

    Nevada Countys 14 small, family-
