1ST VICE PRESIDENT, DEAN OF CHAIRS

I hope, along with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, all members will have time to reflect on another great year in Club. Some Chairs and committees have completed their 2018–19 events; some Chairs and their committees are busy/active all year; other Chairs and their committees are preparing for events.

So now is the time to get the “engines running” again to be prepared for a very busy time. January brings the Educational Awards committee into full swing to recruit and select students who will receive awards; Mary Lou Caldwell will be passing the clipboard and getting us organized for the Wistaria Festival on March 17. Yes, it is actually on St. Patrick’s Day so let’s hope for the “Luck of Irish” for the perfect California spring day to show off and share our treasure. Philanthropy, under the guidance of Darlene Traxler, will be looking for recipients of our yearly donations. And, of

course, we have the very special Birthday Meeting group chaired by Judy Webb-Martin; a very special birthday celebration this will be as Club turns 75. We have Huck Finn and Mt. Wilson Trail Race right around the corner.

Keeping track of all of this activity we have Photography, Publicity, President’s Book, and Report Writing chaired by Birgitta Gerlinger, Susan Gallagher, Nancy Dorn, Jan Greteman, and Maggie Ellis respectively.

We have lots to look forward to as the new year starts. Most important is the time to appreciate all the good things; support each other through the rough times; and be grateful that we are part of a caring, supportive group of ladies!

Happy 2019 to all. May the year bring you and your families peace, good health, adventures, and the time to enjoy!

It’s 2019 – Happy 75th Birthday, Civic Club! We will be doing several things this year to celebrate and here are just a few of the Ways and Means happenings:

Ralphs Rewards – This year I would like all Ralphs shoppers to register your rewards card online at ralphs.com As of the writing of this article we have gone from 8 members registered to 11 with a quarterly earning $122.60 coming back to club (Sept.–Nov.) If you haven’t already registered your card or have not renewed your participation (required every September), please do so and please let me know if I can help…this is what they call “easy money.”

Eat Outs – We will be kicking off the birthday year with a little Feliz Cumpleanos at Pacos Restaurant in Arcadia. At the time of publication, the manager has not confirmed a date. I have asked for the last Tuesday of the month but I suspect the holidays have been a busy time in the restaurant business. Please watch for an e-blast soon.

Queen of Diamonds Casino Night – By now I hope you have reserved Saturday, March 23, at 7 p.m. for a night of celebrating 75 years, Vegas style. Your annual fund raising committee is hard at work putting together a fun evening of socializing and “fun” raising. Yes, this is breaking from our traditional luncheon but the Board is excited for this opportunity to host a different style of event that will welcome spouses and dates as well as new Civic Club supporters.

♦ What is a Casino Night? Guests will have an opportunity to learn casino style games and win opportunity drawing tickets that they get to place in the containers of the prizes they hope to take home. Regular U.S. currency will be exchanged for “funny money” that will be used at the tables, traded for chips that will be used to bet. Poker, black jack, craps and roulette will be the featured games. Don’t worry if you don’t know the rules, the dealers are there to help. Remember, this is Vegas style but we are not in Vegas. The more you play, the more funds we raise, the more tickets you can win and the more philanthropies we can support….win, win!!

♦ Will there be food at Casino Night? Yes, each member will be assessed $20 to help cover the cost of heavy appetizers, desserts, coffee, water and Civic Club punch. A cash

bar will also be available (beer, wine, sodas and mixed drinks).

♦ What about the auction? What about the auction? We have begun the process of gathering items for our "Queen of Diamonds" Casino Night fund raiser. Marcia and Colleen will be co-chairing this part of the event. In the past for our luncheons, we have had about 75 items for the Chinese Auction. This year, we will have about 20 bigger-ticket items. At the end of the evening, guests will cash in their chips for tickets to put in for the prize they would like to win.

One option for your contribution for the item would be to go in with others to compile a large ‘basket’/prize. OR...

Donate cash and we will put together the raffle gift.

Colleen will be contacting you over the next month or so if she hasn't heard from you.The deadline for turning in gifts or money will be March 1st.

Thanks in advance...Marcia & I are looking forward to a fun evening!

♦ Tickets? – Attached to your newsletter is a form and brief article by the Ticket Sales Chairperson, Jane Zamanzadeh. Our Standing Rules share with us that each member is to purchase at least one ticket (more, we hope, because it will be fun) and support the food with your $20 assessment. Any questions—please check-in with Jane.

♦ Did someone say Money Hat? Yes, we will continue the tradition and there will be a special Casino Night Hat of cash with separate opportunity drawing tickets available for sale the night of the event.

♦ The planning committee will be meeting the second Tuesday of each month leading up to the event with our next meeting on January 8, 7 p.m., at Marcia Bent’s home.

Please remember, I am here to answer any of your q u e s t i o n s o r c o n c e r n s s o e - m a i l m e a t [email protected] and we can make this event successful together!

A Casino Night ticket order form is attached to this Newsletter. Each ticket costs $30. In lieu of

making a salad as you are required to do for the luncheon, we are asking you to pay a food assessment of $20, which the food committee will use to purchase food for the event. To make it

easier for members, you will be able to purchase

tickets and pay your assessment with one check made payable to “Sierra Madre Civic Club” (please write “Casino Night” on the memo line).

Please note that all active and active honorary life members are required to buy one ticket and pay a food assessment even if they are unable to attend Casino Night. But we do hope you will attend. Not only will you and your guests be helping to raise money for our philanthropies, but you will also be having the chance to socialize with other Club members and their spouses and friends. Unlike the luncheon where you must be quiet in order to hear what’s being auctioned, at Casino Night chatting and raucous (okay, semi-raucous) laughter are encouraged. It truly promises to be a fun evening with lots of good entertainment, tasty food, delicious drinks, and some very tempting prizes to be won. Do plan to be there and do purchase tickets soon so you are able to purchase as many as you’d like.

—Jane Zamanzadeh, Ticket Chair

3RD VICE PRESIDENT, MEMBERSHIP

What better way to start our 75th year than with two special events! Our second All Member Social will be held from 7:00 to 7:30 before the General Meeting on January 10. The first Social was highly successful, having given the members who attended a chance to meet new people and catch up with old (i.e., tenured) friends. The next Social will give us a chance to hear about holiday happenings, share New Year’s resolutions and make Super Bowl predictions.

We were fortunate to induct several new members in 2018. It portends well that our second special event is the installation of Donna Madsen as a new member. Moreover, a few others have shown interest in the Civic Club and we expect other new members to join soon. Please keep inviting people you think would be interested in and could benefit the Civic Club.

Best wishes to all in the New Year.—Mary Higgins, Jane Zamanzadeh

I am happy to report we are ending this year in a healthy healing mode from

• Broken bones suffered by Margaret Switzer, Mary-Beth Finnerty, and Jean Coleman;

• Life-saving delicate surgeries undergone by Darlene Crook;

• A long-term painful bout of Shingles, etc., endured by Sharon Lefler;

• Other health issues including surgeries (hip and/or knee) of members and husbands, and sadly;

• The passing of Larry, husband of Mary Bickel.

The dictionary states, “to HEAL is to make whole or sound.” I wish all of you patience and strength as you continue walking through this journey.

Special Mention: I would be remiss to not mention that Club member Ellen O’Leary’s daughter, 17-year-old Lydia, was selected as a Rose Princess. Congratulations, Lydia. We’ll be watching!

I want to thank my back up crew of Mary Bickel, Joan Crow, Mary Lou Caldwell, Prudence Levine, Gloria Giersbach, Nancy Beckham, Patty Krok, Suzanne Decker, Jane Zamanzadeh, Mary Higgins, Sue Quinn, Nancy Fox and Vickie Vernon. It gave me ease of my mind to know I had them as a galley of support.

I wish you and your families a healthy loving season filled with joy.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT—INSPIRATIONAL

Presented by Pat Krok at the December 13 meeting

ANTARTICA—Consider the fruitcake.

Long maligned for its questionable taste, its ubiquity and its toughness, the dessert might have further cemented itself in food lore after a discovery in Antarctica.

In one of the most hostile regions known to humankind, conservationists unearthed an ice-covered fruitcake they believe once belonged to British explorer Robert Falcon Scott, the New Zealand-based Antarctic Heritage Trust said this past week.

The age of the fruitcake: 106 years old.

A conservation manager said it was in “excellent condition.”

And the trust said it smelled “almost” edible.

The cake, dating to the Cape Adare-based Northern Party of Scott’s Terra Nova expedition (1910–1913 ), was found in Antarctica’s oldest building, which was constructed by a Norwegian explorer’s team in 1899 and used by Scott’s team in 1911, the trust said.

BEAUTIFICATION

Thanks to the Beautification Committee, the Rotunda was decked out in red for the holidays.
