Harvesting fresh fish and vegetables from a roof farm? Measuring venous blood pressure with olive oil? Recy-cling tyres? What may sound improb-able to us is already possible thanks to innovative methods and technolo-gies. At the Swiss Innovation Forum’s Future Expo you will encounter these and many other novel and exclusive ideas and products, and have the opportunity to talk to the innovative minds behind them. What sparks off innovation? An idea. It may be driven by the benefit it will

bring – meeting a need, making a process more efficient or a meth-od more simple, and so bringing advances in a whole sector. Or it may be driven by a finding, the application of something new, the benefits of which are not yet known. Inventive talent alone is not enough to achieve this. An idea or an in-vention cannot be termed an innovation until it is exploited commer-cially. I am not talking about basic research. No, the innovative pro-cess involves both academia and industry. Both must work together, pooling their strengths and experience. Switzerland is a country of small and medium-sized enterprises and excellent higher education. It is not always easy to bring the two to-gether, and neither is this something which happens of its own ac-cord. However, there are many mechanisms to encourage links

Foreword

between industry and research. For example, we have set up sec-tor-specific and thematic networks in which both higher education and businesses are represented. The federal Commission for Tech-nology and Innovation, the CTI, supports these networks and so helps to encourage the vital transfer of knowledge and technology between the two.A further important initiative set up by the CTI and aimed at SMEs in particular are the so-called innovation mentors, experts who advise entrepreneurs on the various funding options in Switzerland, help to set up projects and put companies in contact with the right research partners. However, successful innovation not only results in a product or pro-cess which is ready for the market. No, it may even lead to the crea-tion of a start-up company. Young innovative minds in particular often take the bold step of setting up on their own. The CTI provides them with support in the form of coaching programmes and expertise. At Future Expo you will meet some of these promising start-ups. You can look forward to some exciting and inspiring conversations and to being enthused with both the inventive and the entrepreneurial spirit.

Walter Steinlin, CTI President

EUREKA Award 2014: Nominee in category Innovators of Tomorrow Eurostars project EMSAT

In the project EMSAT, the Austrian company Geodata and its university partners Montanuniversität Leoben (AT) and Ruhr-Universität Bochum (DE) have developed an integrated tunnel monitoring, simulation and in-formation system. It consists of three interlinked modules: 1. EMSAT-cut: a realtime measurement system consisting of sensors and devices used to monitor the individual forces acting on excavation tools of a tunnel boring machine. 2. EMSAT-sim: a processing system consisting of computer hard- and software components used to calculate finite-element tunnel simulations rapidly and automatically. 3. EMSAT-inf: an information system used for management, visualization and analysis of tunneling data and for connecting all EMSAT-modules. EMSAT provides continuous prognoses (e.g. of the expected ground de-formation) right during tunnel excavation. The prognoses are based on input data that are live-recorded on site and transferred directly from the tunnel boring machine to a remote data processing center via the Inter-net. Offered as a webservice, EMSAT helps avoiding tunneling risks such as collapses or critical deformation.

EUREKA Award 2014: Nominee in category Competitiveness:EUREKA Pro Factory project LRF

The benefit of the international cooperation between AUDI AG & FlexProp was a development of ultralight roof fixture. Reducing the weight then gave us the chance of replacing the existing concept (Massive transfer System) with a robot handling concept.

Being able to develop a Robot based concept resulted in the following benefits:

■ Investment reduction of 30%■ Energy reduction of 40%■ Potential shop floor space reduction up to 60%

Additionally, we achieved increased flexibility with new model integra-tions, increased capacity for new model derivatives and a simplified com-missioning process.

The innovation developed during this project has created a standard de-sign that is just in use in the Volkswagen Group, incl. AUDI AG.

As a result the solution has been implemented around the world in the automotive-bodyshops of the Volkswagen Group.

EUREKA Clusters, essential instruments for European competitiveness

EUREKA Clusters are strategic initiatives proposed and led by industry, developing innovative technologies of key importance for European com-petitiveness. They facilitate R&D and innovation projects on the basis of a broad industrial participation spanning large industry and SMEs as well as research institutions and other public or private organisations.

EUREKA Clusters are a EUREKA success story. They feature a high indus-trial participation, with an increasing level of SME participation (30% – 50%). The success of the Clusters is due to their flexibility, enabling com-panies to share their pre-competitive R&D and innovation efforts through international cooperation. Member countries choosing to support a com-pany in their country have the opportunity to align this support with their national priorities.

EUREKA Clusters clearly reflect synergies where European industry, re-search and collaboration interests, innovation capacity and national fund-ing opportunities meet.

Clusters are part of EUREKA and contribute to its major objective: to coor-dinate and foster private and public investment in cooperative industrial R&D&I in Europe, towards a sustainable European competitiveness.

CityFlow – Wide-scale intelligence based on people’s movements in cities and premises

To help your customers, you need to know them. Whether you are a city, an agency or a shopping centre, information about how the target popula-tion moves and behaves is essential to design your services.

CityFlow is an intelligence system that passively collects anonymous data about people movements in a city or premises: footfall, stays’ duration, origin, distribution map and mobility patterns. Its innovation is the use of combined location-based technologies, which allows accuracy at an af-fordable price without intrusion in customers’ mobile devices. No corre-lation between device and person is required, perfectly privacy-compli-ant. The system offers web-based monitoring tools and implies adaptive deployments to fulfil customers’ requirements (location accuracy, wide coverage, type of analytics). Results consist in analytics about people’s behaviour on a city-wide scale in order to give municipalities, malls and advertisers the opportunity to improve services for their customers: tour-ists’ assistance, traffic guidance, promotions based on customers’ prefer-ences. CityFlow (E! 7439) is co-funded by the State Secretariat for Educa-tion, Research and Innovation and the European Union.

e-broidery® Illuminating Textiles

e-broidery® is the name given to these light textiles, which were de-veloped under the auspices of a research project and brought to be launched on the market. These innovative materials are designed to meet both decorative and functional needs. They are equipped with electronic components, which have been incorporated in the various textile surfac-es using embroidery techniques. The Lucerne University has researched the aesthetic possibilities of integrating light into the textiles within sev-eral experiments. Our partner Forster Rohner Textile Innovations has it proved possible to realise e-broidery®-technology in such a way that the textiles retain such properties as softness to touch, washability and ease of folding. Concrete application examples, like the curtain collection eLu-mino of Création Baumann illustrate the design possibilities which can be achieved through the use of e-broidery® in the areas of interior design and fashion. The project was funded by the CTI under the initiative “Starker Franken”.

Navigation solutions for micro-helicopters to inspect & survey industrial structures

Operators of current unmanned micro-helicopters rely on GPS position-ing in order to safely control such a platform. However, GPS technology is only accurate up to 5 meters and becomes unavailable indoors or in proximity of structures of interest. Skybotix provides visual navigation technology that replaces GPS posi-tioning by much more accurate, camera-based positioning. Skybotix mul-ti-camera sensors allow industrial-grade and very accurate visual odom-etry and 3D reconstruction in unstructured in- and outdoor environments without active measurements. The map created of the environment is used for automatic collision avoid-ance and to improve the user-interaction.Using visual data for navigation allows to safely operate aerial platforms indoors, over long distances and in cluttered and confined environments. In result, points of interest can be approached closer, faster and automat-ically without the risk of a crash. In addition, Skybotix uses the visual data to improve the data acquisition workflow. A live 3D representation of the environment helps operators in terms of orientation, flight planning and data management.

The technical assistance system DomoCare® sets new standards

There are more than 7 million seniors in Western Europe in need of do-mestic and medical care. This population is growing at a rate of 3%, lead-ing to increased costs for social security systems. In Switzerland alone, more than 200’000 elderly people are requiring Home Care assistance and are affiliated to a Home Care organization. They all could benefit from DOMOSAFETY’s solution. DOMOSAFETY’s intelligent care system learns the daily routines of the resident through wireless sensors placed strategically around the home. The information captured from the sensors is analyzed and compared to a uniquely created profile of the resident; as a result, system detects sit-uations outside of what is considered ‘normal’ or baseline and identifies potential risks that could lead to increased fragility and loss of mobility, as well as domestic incidents such as flood and fire. It provides the family and care givers a simplified visual interface accessible using mobile de-vices such as smart phones.

Printed and organic electronics – Technologies with potential

i-net innovation networks shows the status quo of printed and organic electronics with different applications from participants of the i-net Tech-nology Circle, which is supported by CSEM. In the Technology Circles of i-net Cleantech, trendsetting ideas can be discussed with expert repre-sentatives of technology companies and research institutions in order to develop new products and solutions.

Essentially, printed and organic electronics are made using a highly pre-cice printing process which allows the application of different materials in several steps with a thickness on the order of 10 to 100 nanometers. This results in micrometer to millimeter thick electronic components, which can be integrated for the production of displays, sensors or other systems.

The main advantages are the various design possibilities of the printed products, their flexibility, transparency, light weight, potentially lower en-vironmental impact during manufacturing, operation and disposal, ease of integration in large-scale objects, as well as the (long-term) potential of reducing the production costs on large areas.

Empa – The Place where Innovation Starts: Portable Gas Sensor for Mobile Applications

Trace gas analysis is of great importance in a wide range of applications such as industrial process control and human breath analysis for non-in-vasive diagnostics. Furthermore, many trace gases impact our environ-ment and need permanent monitoring. A portable MIR spectrometer was developed based on direct absorption laser spectroscopy. Miniaturiza-tion of the building blocks and consideration of power dissipation led to a high-sensitivity sensor no larger than an A3 sheet of paper. The sen-sor can be packed to withstand harsh weather conditions, and it is fully field-deployable. Its small footprint and robust construction make the de-vice highly suitable for mobile applications.

Empa’s research activities link applications-oriented research to imple-mentation of new ideas in the areas of nanostructured, “smart” materials and surfaces, environmental, energy, and sustainable building technolo-gies as well as biotechnology and medical technology. Through an effi-cient technology transfer Empa is capable of providing its partners with services and solutions that not only enhance their innovative edge and competitiveness, but also help to improve the quality of life for the public at large.

Eye Contact for Video Conferencing

In order to realistically imitate real-world patterns in virtual communica-tion, it is critical that eye contact is preserved. Unfortunately, conventional hardware setups for consumer video conferencing inherently prevent this. During a session we tend to look at the face of the person talking, ren-dered in a window within the display, instead of facing the camera, typi-cally located at the top or bottom of the screen. Therefore it is not possible to have eye contact. “CatchEye” is a gaze correction system that allows users to have eye con-tact during video conferencing. It runs in real-time on average consumer hardware and preserves both the integrity and expressiveness of the face as well as the fidelity of the scene as a whole. The main component of “CatchEye” is a face replacement algorithm that synthesizes a novel view of the user’s face in which the gaze is correct and seamlessly transfers it into the original color image. In the output video stream the user is now directly facing his communication partner when looking at the video con-ferencing window.

Technologies that make the difference

Upcoming connected devices are the common denominator of the inter-disciplinary interaction of smart sensors, communication as well as ad-vanced algorithmic processing.

The cases of innovating products proposed during Swiss Innovation Fo-rum are examples of such integration. In the case of Sensecore, wearable systems for medical applications are based upon two smart electrodes, connected with a single wire integrated in the textile. The careful integra-tion of textiles and electrodes allow for a desirable design of the shirt with the functionality of physiological parameter monitoring.

In Weartech, the sensing devices are textile fibers, eg. conductive or pi-ezoresistive, embroidered in tissue allowing measurements like breath (eg. extension of the thorax) or pulse. Beyond lifestyle management, these tools can be used for medical applications, for instance a quasi-quantita-tive monitoring of patients with psychological problems.

Optical measurements, performed from a wrist device, allow the monitor-ing of pulse. Artefact correction algorithms in the new product PulseOn allow monitoring the pulse rate continuously and, more importantly, relia-bly, without a chest belt.

Creoptix™ WAVE: High-Sensitivity for Drug Discovery

Drugs work by binding to molecules in the patient’s body, the so-called drug targets. The thorough and accurate analysis and characterization of such interaction between a drug and its drug target has therefore be-come of utmost importance. This especially as modern drug discovery approaches but also regulatory requirements ask for more and better quality data than ever before.

Based on Swiss innovation, Creoptix™ WAVE provides a solution for this need by best-in-class sensitivity and highest resolution in the analysis of drug-drug target interaction. Thanks to the WAVE, waveguide interfero-metry, the intrinsically most sensitive principle for optical sensors, can now be implemented in a commercially available system for a broad user base. As further benefit, a smart integration of sensor and microfluidics on a disposable chip reduce costs and down time for maintenance by providing clean microfluidics for every test.

Automatic Vein Pressure Measurement by Controlled Compression Sonography

The current technique for measuring venous pressure (VP) is invasive and costly requiring insertion of a catheter with potential complications. Therefore, a VP measuring technique has been developed, which will avoid having to resort to painful catheter examinations in the future. VP is an important medical parameter. It is measured every hour for specific medical conditions in intensive care units. The VP allows to draw conclu-sions regarding the volume of blood in the vascular system. This is rele-vant in the case of haemorrhage, for example. VP measurements current-ly require the insertion of a catheter. This procedure is laborious, painful for the patient and can lead to serious complications.

VeinPress GmbH has succeeded developing a device which gets placed in front of an ultrasound transducer and which delivers pressure values to a display unit. In this display unit the pressure values get combined with ultrasound images and the VP gets calculated automatically by novel software. The product will allow for significant savings in healthcare. It is expected to replace at least 10 percent of catheter measurements per-formed worldwide.

Tyre recycling. We transform scrap tyres into a valuable and sustainable resource. Our mission is to build profitable, sustainable and global solutions for the collection, processing and recycling of scrap tyres by developing and im-plementing innovative technologies and business processes.

TRS is born from the observation of the significant inefficiency, or even non-existence of a consistent, comprehensive and profitable scrap tyre recycling solution. In Switzerland only, the equivalent of more than 50’000 tons of scrap tyres are collected every year. A large majority of those tyres are valued by energy recovery, i.e. burnt in cement factories.

To enable a beneficial valorization of the rubber from scrap tyres, TRS has developed proprietary mechanical and biotech solutions: tyre cut-ting, ultra-high pressure pulverization followed by a biotech process. The last step enables a surface devulcanization of the rubber powder and its transformation into a valuable recycled raw material.

The innovative nature of TRS lies as much in the novel Swiss technologies as in the implementation of a unique business model.

Vision of the future: the smart factory

We have seen mechanization, mass production and automation, but now a new type of industrial revolution is emerging. The basic concept be-hind Industrie 4.0 is closer integration between the digital and physical worlds. What are known as “cyber-physical systems” facilitate individual, flexible and more efficient production (the “smart factory”). Networking takes place at multiple levels, covers distances ranging from the local to the global, and encompasses the collection, interpretation and use of data (“smart data”). Digitization of the value chain ensures that overall man-agement of processes is geared to demand. Smart production is still in its infancy, but the related business models are very promising. Any compa-ny wanting to remain competitive, however, should already be looking at the potential of this form of industrialization. We will be happy to provide information on concepts and activities relating to Industrie 4.0 and will be delighted to welcome manufacturing companies as well as suppliers and service providers to our stand!

LYRA® – this ABILITY Switzerland gait trainer puts patients back on their feet

Automated, neurological gait training therapy was developed in the mid-1990s. Until now, highly complex and costly devices have dominated the market. These prices could only be afforded by well-off clinics. As a result there is a greater demand for an inexpensive gait trainer that is easy to use, suitable for everyday clinical practice, and nevertheless fulfills the high standards for therapy. The founders of the company ABILITY Switzer-land understood this early on, and thus established their startup company at the end of 2010.

From the beginning there was an awareness of the great importance of design and ergonomics for the gait trainer’s success. QUO has supported the team since the spring of 2011, not only with selectivity and versatility in technical development, but also in the early conceptual phase of the functional design, which decisively influenced the development of all oth-er elements.

With the LYRA® system, ABILITY Switzerland has developed a gait trainer that takes the high standards of today’s neurorehabilitation therapy into account. It will return walking ability and thus mobility to thousands of patients.

We step on the gas for the environment

The ETH Spin-off Climeworks and Audi are revolutionising the market for synthetic fuels. The vision for both partners: extensive CO2 neutral mobil-ity, whilst using existing infrastructures.Climeworks developed the so-called “CO2 collectors” in Zurich. They fil-ter pure CO2 from the air using very little energy. This “renewable” CO2 is an ideal raw material for amongst other things, vehicle fuel use. Audi has recognised the benefit: In Werlte (GER) in a world first, a CO2 collector will be integrated into a unit to produce synthetic fuel in 2015.The AMAG presents the vehicle here: The Audi A3 Sportback g-tron is the first Audi vehicle with reduced CO2 emissions in production. Tanks of compressed natural gas (CNG) mean less CO2 is created. It is possible to do up to 400 km of the full range of 1,300 km only with the use of pure natural gas. This creates CO2 emissions of only 92 – 88 g/km (CNG). The g-tron is driven by a new 1.4 TFSI engine.

With 81 kW/110 PS and 200 Nm torque the Audi A3 Sportback g-tron reaches a top speed of more than 190 km/h, the kick from zero to100 km/h takes eleven seconds. For 100 km the five-door consumes on average less than 3.5 kilograms of natural gas, which corresponds to CO2 emis-sions of only 88 g/km.
