    Sight Word Syllable Sort & Graph Directions

    Preparation:Print cards on cardstock and cut apart. Create more than one set to allow multiplegroups of students to utilize this station at one time. Store cards for use acrossmultiple school years.

    Photocopy student response sheets. Cut in half for students to use.

    Skills covered: reading 3rd grade Dolch sight words syllabication basic graphing

    Directions:Have students work in pairs or a small group with a teacher. As a group, workthrough the pile of cards discussing and sorting. Once all the words have beensorted, mix the cards back together. Put into a pile upside down and have pairsselect 10 cards. Partners should read the cards out loud and sort them based on thenumber of syllables. Partners can then record their words on their response sheetand complete the graph to reflect how many of each type of word they have.

    When students finish they can play a matching game by turning all the cards upside-down and selecting two, If the words have the same number of syllables they countas a match, and the player goes again. If they do not have the same number ofsyllables, the cards are turned back over and the next player goes. The game ends
