IS A SIGMA 33 OODTHE BOAT FOR YOU?

Enjoying owning a “modern

classic” is not going to be for

everyone…

• You value owning a solid and seaworthy boat, with

proven offshore performance and pedigree

• You want a boat that will be more than happy to

claw you off leeward shore in a gale

• You want to race competitively at club level and get

on the podium or do some one design racing to

really test your skills

• You are prepared to accept the effort required to

keep a 1982 boat in tip top condition

• You want a boat that is relatively cheap and of

simple enough construction that you can DIY it and

enjoy learning how boats work and are put together

without getting stressed about breaking stuff

• You love the rock and roll challenge of a nipped in

rear section with the kite up in 25 knots!!

• You like beating modern 35 footers upwind

• You value space, a huge aft cabin, hot running

water and a decent shower compartment

• You want to entertain in the cockpit whilst in a

marina and will always stay put on a 25kt day

• You want to cruise comfortably over an

extended period with more than 4 adults

• The prospect of a few gelcoat cracks or chips

from previous adventures offends you rather

• You want to know you can motor through any

wind and sea state at 6+ knots

• You are not that excited about having a

powerful rig that when sailing short handed will

need tweaking and early reefing

• You’re not happy to embrace prop-walk in in

buckets or an egg-beater propeller…

Yes please No thanks

CRITICAL SYSTEMS

Any 1982 boat will have a

lot of systems that were

fine back in the day; but not

quite what you are looking

for in a modern yacht…

Updated instruments based around Raymarine SeatalkNG backbone.

• Speed, depth and wind transducers are all new (2011/12) Raymarine DST800

• Connects to a set of Raymarine displays (2 x i70 multi-purpose digital displays,

1 x i60 analogue wind display).

• Also connected to the backbone is a Garmin 152H fixed GPS providing

positional information and allowing you to programme waypoints etc.

Instruments

A Yanmar 2GM20 raw water cooled engine provides power. This engine was

a replacement for the original Volvo in the mid 1990s and being lighter than

the original it is fitted above corrector weights to ensure compliance with class

rules.

• The engine was rebuilt in 2011, including having the injectors removed and

cleaned, and new engine mounts installed.

• Raw water pump, exhaust manifold, starter motor and fuel pump have all

been replaced in our ownership and the engine has been serviced and

maintained annually

• When the engine was refitted in 2011 we added a Volvo drip-free stern

gland (which is a blessing because it really is drip free and keeps the

engine sump bone dry)

• To finish it all off, the engine compartment is fully sound insulated.

Engine

Most 1982 wiring and switching has been stripped out and replaced.

• The 12 volt system has been extensively rewired and upgraded, including

conversion to LED interior lighting (with switchable red/white for night use)

• The domestic supply comes from twin 110 Ah batteries (2010) and the

charging system includes a Blue Sea Systems voltage sensitive relay.

• A Nasa BM-1 battery monitor helps monitor proceedings and the

dedicated engine start battery (under the chart table) combined with the

relay ensures you can’t run the domestics flat whilst sailing or at anchor

• We’ve got a Ctek M200 batter charger that’s really handy for time spent

on a pontoon when you want to charge the batteries and there’s a 240v

connection wired to a double socket

• A Webasto Airtop 2000 heater (diesel) with vents in both cabins helps

keep things cosy when the temperature drops

GO CRUISING

An ideal first cruising boat. Remove the racing sails, pop on the cruising sails and the furling headsail drum and da daaa……you’ve got a solid, well built and very seaworthy boat who will take you anywhere you desire, and some places you couldn’t even dream of…

SAFE CRUSING ESSENTIALS

Original side windows in an early Sigma 33 are

usually cracked and crazed and in a horrible

aluminium frame that leaks like a sieve. Giving up

on refurbishment we’ve replaced these with

frameless perspex windows, with an easy to

replace rubber gasket that have been bone dry

since installation

Windows

Sprayhood

An easy to handle sail set up for cruising:

• Fully-battened cruising mainsail (Sanders Sails 2011) and cruising sail

cover

• Rutgerson cars (with rollers) on this main make it really easy to handle

short handed as it goes up and down with minimum effort and combined

with the lazy jacks is easy to drop and reef

• Furling cruising Genoa from Sanders (2011) with UV protection strip

Cruising sails

A custom fit black

sprayhood for cruising that

is easy to pop up and down

whilst underway makes all

the difference to a damp

summer cruise

A Raymarine ST2000

tiller pilot slots into

the customised tiller

(stainless handles

designed for

helmsmen who like

fingertip control)

Handling

Saloon and fore hatches replaced

with new Lewmar Ocean hatches.

They don’t leak and look so much

better than the originals…

Hatches

We had a new rudder

built in 2010 to replace

the old delaminating

one that held lots of

water.

• And because the front cabin IS your master cabin, there is a recent (2013) 6 inch deep

set of cushions with infill to give the owner and their partner lots of comfort

Cushions

It’s a small but very functional galley completely transformed by addition of:

• Integrated Waeco Coolmatic CB-36 fridge (no grimy and hard to clean retro-fitted cold plate) that

is so efficient it freezes stuff if you're not very careful and can run quite happily with the engine off

• New worktop and square sink so you can wash up normal size plates

• Pressurised cold water system thanks to a freshwater pump and accumulator

• Fairly standard Neptune 2500 duel burner oven with grill

Galley INTERNAL CRUISING COMFORTS

Sigma 33s typically sport mouldy1980s mushroom headlining and carpet side lining holding years and years worth of old

owner dust. The heads often sport classic melamine! On Ephesian we’ve:

• Replaced head linings with white cushioned vinyl covered marine ply; fresh and wipe clean with removable panels that

make it easy to access deck fittings and electrics

• All side linings replaced, lined with 6mm closed cell foam insulation and recovered in light grey marine side lining material

• All lockers removed, varnished and replaced with nets to keep your stuff firmly in storage

• Forepeak lockers lined with same white cushioned vinyl providing huge amounts of personal storage in the master bedroom

Lighting

Faded melamine is a distant memory

with almost all old finishes now

replaced and/or re-painted.

There’s an updated sink and worktop

in the heads, with a handy spray head

tap to give the illusion of being able to

shower!) and a large mirror so you can

see the results!

Interior finishes

Chart table has been re-built and re-made in teak veneer

(no more melamine!)

All lockers removed, reconditioned and re-varnished

Woodwork

LED lighting throughout is efficient and gives a light a fresh feel to

Ephesian. Even the ‘man cave’ of port quarter berth can be

welcoming place to have a mid-passage nap.

GO RACING

Load up the full set of racing sails, clear out the drinks locker and you’ve got a fully compliant Sigma 33 OOD to race in class, or perhaps use her highly competitive IRC rating to win some handicap trophies

GO FAST

A boat that has been raced may

have had a harder life on paper;

but it will also have a lot more

top notch deck gear, that will

have been carefully specified

and maintained

Primary winches have been upgraded to Lewmar Evo 45 self tailing winches. Perfect for winding in big headsails!

Secondary winches (on the coach roof) are Antal self tailing winches. Upgraded to the maximum power allowed under

Sigma 33 OOD class rules.

Winches

All critical running rigging replaced with Dyneema (just 3 reefing lines are still

braid on braid) which allows accurate calibration of sheet and halyard tensions

All sheets and guys are also Dyneema with soft shackles on genoa sheets

A brace of new Spinlock clutches ensures nothing slips and all three reefing

lines can be managed from the cockpit; with no need to use the baby reefing

winch at gooseneck

Ropes and clutches

Ephesian boasts a sizeable fraction of the Harken catalogue screwed to her deck….

• Harken windward sheeting car provides the ultimate trimming control for your main

man; complete with ball bearing track for fingertip control

• A Harken fine and course mainsheet system with ratchets on both controls

• A Harken Mk IV furler with removable drum and two track aluminium head foil delivers

fast racing corners without the drum and easy conversion to a furler when required

A Lewmar adjustable car allows headsail car positions to be changed from the cockpit

WIN RACES

We’ve had great success at club racing on Ephesian thanks in part to her brilliant IRC handicap; but also her age helps in terms of club handicapping systems

Ephesian is fully class compliant to Sigma 33 OOD Class Measurement Rules, which means

you can race her in a Sigma 33 one design event by just declaring you are compliant and

making sure you have the right kit on-board.

This is a link to the current checklist.

Sigma 33 OOD class compliant

In 2015 we had Ephesian weighed and sails measured to improve our performance under IRC by getting our own

IRC rating rather than using the endorsed standard rating for the Sigma 33 OOD class.

You can see the process here.

In 2015 this gave us 36 seconds an hour advantage over our standard rating. Whoopee!

In 2015 we won the Royal Lymington two handed series; and in our final fully crewed series in Spring 2016 we

won Lymington Adjusted Handicap Class 1.

THE WARDROBE

Ready to go and win a

regatta, or practice for

regatta, or just go cruising

Ephesian has a full set of new racing sails from Elvstrom (EPEX laminate

membrane) ready to go and win a regatta without spending any more cash.

Regatta race sails from Elvstrom:

• Racing mainsail / cover 2013

• Racing #1 2015

• Racing #2 2012

• Racing #3 battened headsail 2012

All headsails come with race bags

• Lightweight spinnaker Elvstrom before our ownership

• Heavy reaching spinnaker Sobstad before our ownership

• Storm jib / trysail Sobstad before our ownership

The spinnakers will be the next sails you might like to replace; we never

bothered as the old ones didn’t seem to be losing us much ground on the race

course, and they are pretty bomb proof.

Regatta ready

You won’t want to mess up your brand new sails on practice days, so in

addition to the regatta set you can call upon the rest of the wardrobe:

• Racing #1 (2011) this is a Kevlar prototype from Elvstrom which is starting

to get a bit tired, but bullet proof and brilliant for heavy No 1 days

• Old racing #1 headsail (Sobstad/Elvstrom) staring to delaminate

• Old racing #2 headsail (Sobstad/Elvstrom) which is cut to fit the furler if

you want to use this short handed racing

• Old racing #3 working jib (Sobstad/Elvstrom) also cut to fit the furler if you

want to use this short handed racing

Club racing or practising

In addition to the 2011 Sanders cruising set of fully battened dacron main and

furling genoa there is also a set of old cruising sails (#1, #2, #3 headsails and

an old cruising main). We washed and repaired them and they got us round

one summer cruise, they are serviceable but tired.

For washbags?

Additional bits of canvas to help you stay organised and the boat stay dry:

• Large acrylic canvas halyard bags that attach each side of the companionway

• Large acrylic canvas bag that poppers into the forehatch so you can do hatch

drops and hoists AND keep the fore cabin dry.

2015 RATINGSA 2015 rating of 0.903 gives you an advantage of 36 seconds an hour over the standard 2015 IRC rating of non-measured Sigma 33 OOD (0.913)
