An Overview of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Alpha Phi Alpha is the first intercollegiate, Greek-letter Fraternity founded for African-Americans. Since the day the fraternity was founded, (December 4, 1906) at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, ov er 100,000 members have been initiated into the Fraternity.

The organization's national programs date back to 1919 when Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity introduced its "Go-to-high School, Go-to College" campaign to increase the education level of the African-American community. The Fraternity subsequently took the lead in the African-American voting rights struggle and coined the nationally famous phrase: "A Voteless People is a Hopeless People" as part of its effort to register minority voters. In 1980, the Fraternity and the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation began collaboratively implementing “Project Alpha”. This collaborative project is designed to provide education, motivation and skill-building on issues of respect, responsibilities, and role of males in relationships. Project Alpha consists of a series of workshops and informational sessions conducted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity brothers. On July 23, 2010 the Fraternity implemented its fourth national program, Brother’s Keeper. Under this program, great attention is given to senior brothers of the fraternity, their widows and senior citizens of our communities.

Today, Alpha Phi Alpha continues its commitment to the community through the fraternity's education, active engagement in community service, encouraging academics, and building foundations. These are key elements that have been developed to provide scholarships to outstanding students and shelter to underprivileged families. To demonstrate the vision necessary for the next millennium, the fraternity has dedicated itself to training a new generation of leaders through national mentoring programs and partnerships designed to ensure the success of our children and our future. Additionally we work teachers and educators at all levels to provide instruction that will equip students to lead in their chose career fields.
