/ SIGNA: Species Iris Group of North America 2005 39th Species Seed Exchange Greetings: Orders will be filled in the order received. Return immediately for the best selection. Our first shipment of seeds will begin about January 15. Orders received after that date will be filled as time permits. NO orders will be filled ff received after March 15. Please note the $1 handling charge per order. If you wish to share your SIGNA list with friends who are non-members, they may copy the order blank and send in their own order as long as they include the $9.00 for one year's membership along with their seed order. We have included a place at the bottom of the order blank for anyone joining and ordering at the same time. If you are already a member and wish to pay your dues at the same time you may do that also. After each item in the seed list you will find a number estimating the total number of seeds available. Donations with fewer than 100 seeds will most likely be sold out early. Be sure to check substitutes when ordering any of these seeds. They will D..Qj be used as substitutes. Seeds in short supply may be packed with as few as 4 seeds. If you want items with more seeds per packet, order items in greater supply. We will NOT send more than one packet per listing. The following abreviations are used in the seedlist: HP means Hand Pollinated, OP means Open Pollinated, coli. means Wild Collected, and ex. indicates that the plants that seeds were collected from were originally from another source (which may be a person, a seed exchange, wild location, or a garden) which immediately follows the abbreviation. The alphabetical groups (A, B, C, etc.) used in the seed list follow the outline provided in the SIGNA Species Iris Study Manual published in 1972, e.g. sub-section Pogoniris, series Pumilae is under A, sub-section Pogoniris, series Intermedeae is underB and so on. The Study Manual, The Iris by Brian Mathew, Iris of China by James Waddick and Zhao Yu-tang, The World of lridaceae by Clive Innes, and the SIGNA Checklists are used as references when verifying names. In a few instances, we included names which we were unable to verify. You should also consult the SIGNA ,~ Species Database. The address is www.badbear.comlsigna. On it you can view information and photos of many iris V species including photos of flowers, plants, and seeds. PLEAS E NOTE: This is the last yearthe SIGNA seed list will include Irispseudacorus. It will become illegal to import and/orsellthis plant orits seeds in June 2006 in MA, the home state of the seed Chairmen. • DONATING SEED

For 2006 seed please mail all seeds by November10. Overseas donors please mail all seeds byOctober 30 and see special note below. Forlater ripening seed please send a list of the latespecies and a brief description of each by the abovedates, so they may be included in the list. Lateripening seed donations must be received no laterthan December 30. Seeds received after thesedates may be used as extras or held for the followingseason's list.

All seeds from the Iridaceae are welcome in theExchange except I. pseudacorus (see note previouspage). Especially popular are seeds from hand-pollinations, wild collections or species that have notappeared for a year or two. Other than these, there areno particular groups that are more popular than others. There are at least 5 requests each for 95% of thedonations.

PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE try to hand-pollinate one or two of the species in your gardenspecifically for the Seed Exchange, either by using twoclones of the same species or by selfing. Handpollination assures that a particular species will cometrue from seed. This is especially important for thosespecies that cross with other species readily (e.g.beardeds, arils, siberians, peN's, LA's, spurias, etc.).This is the only way to preserve these species!

Most of us live near an area where irises grow wild.Wild collected seed is extremely popular and thebest way to receive genetic diversity. If you know anarea where irises are growing wild, please make a trip tocollect from as many plants as possible. Even if it is awidespread species in the U.S., we have manyoverseas members who would like to grow seeds ofour natives. Overseas members: we'd like to growseeds of your native species too!

As for quantity, 100 to 1000 seeds are ideal, but anyamount is welcome. Even if you only have 1 packet ofseed to send, please do so - they will be greatlyappreciated. Paper envelopes are the preferredmethod for packaging seed. Please do not use filmcanisters, small boxes, etc. as they are impossible toorganize.

Mark each envelope clearly and legibly with the correctname. ~ it is a named clone, please provide thespecies or hybrid group to which it belongs. If it is fromhand pollination, mark it HP; if it is wild collectedwrite "wild collected" and give the town, county, state, country and elevation if known; if it is from plantsgrowing in your garden that were wild collected, write "ex.", then give the above information; if it isgrown from seed received from someone elseor a seed exchange (SIGNA, BIS, NARGS), soindicate. Try to give a brief two to four word description,

especially if there are any unique characteristics.Seeds with these descriptions are always morepopular. Be sure to include your name and address. Aseed count estimate would be appreciated.

The SIGNA Seed Exchange is the main fund raiser forSIGNA. The proceeds go toward the publication of ourSIGNA Bulletin and when funds permit, help tosponsor collecting trips, special publlcations, andresearch grants. Please support SIGNA bydonating seed in 2006. Send seed to:
