HALEY YOUNG ’19Chemistry major

“I wanted to get out and experience something different. I wanted to develop skills such as cultural sensitivity and the independence you can only get when living in a foreign country. These are skills I can bring back to the States and incorporate into my daily life.”

Prior to studying abroad, Haley never left the east coast of the United States. She said studying in Thailand automatically caught her eye, because the lifestyle is so different from the U.S. When in Bangkok, she befriended Thai students and community members and learned why the country is nicknamed the “Land of Smiles.” Her travels led her to picturesque mountains, clear blue waters, and elephant sanctuaries. Additionally, she gained a new perspective on how her degree in chemistry can help others around the world.

MATTHEW SMITH ’21History and Middle Eastern studies major

Matthew attended a May-term, faculty-led, peace and conflict studies program in South Africa. He chose to participate in this program, so he could interact with locals, learn from contemporary case studies and see the gorgeous landscape.

C IERRA STEVENS ’20Sociology-Anthropology major, Biology minor

During her first trip outside of the U.S., Cierra explored New Zealand’s vast and unique ecosystem through travel and volunteering. Utilizing skills acquired through her Sociology-Anthropology major, she was able to step outside of herself and view the world through a Kiwi’s perspective. She immersed herself in Maori culture by taking courses about their history and language. She also visited their meeting houses, where she was formally welcomed and, in turn, was later able to help host a welcoming ceremony.

“When you get the opportunity to travel the world, take it and don’t look back because you never know when you’ll get this chance again.”

“As you immerse yourself into new environments and cultures, you also get the chance to grow as a person and truly discover your strengths.”

“Studying abroad is a unique opportunity to live with locals. It is one of the most inexpensive opportunities I will ever have to travel and live abroad.”

“After visiting South Africa, I have a point of reference for future peace and conflict discussions. South Africa was a humbling experience. Observing the way the South Africans have truly left their ugly past behind and move forward together into the future was amazing. It emboldened me to want to help more people across the world reconcile and move on peacefully.”

“To not only be able to live abroad, but also participate in student life within another country is a very unique experience that I am very glad to have taken part of. Studying abroad fulfilled my need to develop myself and experience a world different from my own.”

Steps to Studying Abroad

1. Think about why you want to study abroadWhat do you hope to accomplish during your time abroad? What are your goals for your study abroad experience?

2. Talk to your academic advisorThe earlier you make your academic advisor aware that you’re interested in potentially studying abroad, the earlier they can help you identify the best time for you to go abroad and help you map out all your courses.

3. Review Study Abroad Office resourcesWatch our ‘Steps to Studying Abroad’ video on Youtube, read previous students’ blogs, check out the travel pictures on our Instagram account and attend study abroad events. All of these resources are available on our website below.

4. Meet with E-town’s Study Abroad AdvisorE-town’s Study Abroad Advisor, Megan Bell ‘14 is available to help you through the entire study abroad process!

5. Decide where you want to goThe Study Abroad Office encourages you to talk to recent study abroad alumni, family, and friends about your decision to go abroad and assistance in selecting a program and location.

6. Secure financial aidIt is important that you understand how study abroad finances work, what scholarships and financial aid transfer, as well as allow time to budget for additional expenses abroad, including airfare.

7. Complete the E-town Study Abroad applicationThis application is simple! You can begin your application through the ‘Apply Now!’ button on the Study Abroad Office’s website.

8. Apply to your intended study abroad programOnce you’ve completed all the prior steps and been approved by the College to study abroad, you can apply to your desired program.

Five Reasons to Study Abroad at E-town! 1. Complete a Signature Learning ExperienceYou can fulfill your cross-cultural Signature Learning Experience (SLE) by studying abroad! All E-town students are required to complete two SLEs (internship, research, study abroad, service learning and/or capstone course) before graduating.

2. Financial aid travels with you!Your E-town scholarships and financial aid travel with you for affiliated semester and year-long study abroad programs. Therefore, you pay the same for tuition for a semester abroad as you would on campus! The College also offers additional scholarships and grants for summer and semester study abroad participants!

3. Faculty-Led ProgramsEach year, the College hosts 5 - 10 faculty-led programs. These short-term study abroad programs are led during winter break, spring break or May Term. The programs are led by E-town faculty members. Some programs are designed for students within the professor’s discipline, but many are open to all students, regardless of their major. These programs are a great opportunity to travel with a group of E-town students outside the academic year!

4. Continued Learning Our students often use their study abroad experience as a jumping off point for other experiences, including continued research, as well as applying to Peace Corps and the Fulbright Program. The College had 12 Fulbright Scholars in the last six years and they all studied abroad as undergraduate students!

5. Very Influential ExperienceE-town graduates continuously rank study abroad, as one of the top two most influential education experiences of their time enrolled at the College. Meanwhile, E-town alumni, who did not study abroad, constantly say that not studying abroad was one of the biggest regrets of their time at E-town. So don’t have regrets and study abroad!

How will I pay for my study abroad experience?

Semester ProgramsWill my financial aid package apply to my study abroad experience? When you study abroad with one of our affiliated (aka pre-approved) programs, your E-town financial aid package will be applied to the program. This means you can use your merit-based scholarships as well as your federal and state financial aid to pay for your time abroad. You’ll pay the same for tuition, whether you choose to stay on campus or go abroad. E-town will send your tuition bill to you as normal.

If you choose a study abroad program beyond the offerings on our affiliated list, you must pay the full cost of that respective program. Your E-town scholarships and aid will not be applied to a non-affiliated or partner programs. You can still use your federal financial aid, but you will need to pay for the full amount of the program before you depart for your semester abroad.

All students have different financial aid packages and are therefore encouraged to be in communication with the Financial Aid Office to discuss the specifics of financing your study abroad experience.

International, tuition exchange and tuition remission students should consult the Financial Aid Office to discuss financing study abroad, as your arrangements may be different.

All study abroad questions pertaining to your financial aid can be directed to your Financial Aid Advisor or Jennifer Behmer, Associate Director of Financial Aid at [email protected] or 717-361-1344.

What’s the cost of room and board? All students, regardless of location, are responsible for their program’s room and board expenses. Since you will not be on campus during your semester abroad, E-town will not charge you for housing or a meal plan. Instead, you’ll receive a bill for these costs from your study abroad provider or university. These costs vary by program as they’re dependent on the cost of living in your selected country and the available housing options (ie. apartment, dorm, host family, etc.) Many programs do not offer a meal plan, so you will need to budget for groceries and going out to eat as you’re able.

Summer & Winter ProgramsStudents who attend May term, summer, spring break or winter break study abroad programs are typically not able to apply their E-town financial aid package to their study abroad experience, as these programs occur outside the academic year. However, students earning six or more US credits during a single term are considered part-time students and might be eligible for additional financial aid. If that’s you, please contact the Financial Aid Office to learn more. If you have questions about taking out additional loans for a short-term study abroad experience or other inquires, please contact your Financial Aid Advisor or Jennifer Behmer, Associate Director of Financial Aid at [email protected] or 717-361-1344.

Study Abroad FeeAll E-town study abroad students, excluding faculty-led participants, are required to pay a study abroad. This fee allows the student to be enrolled at two universities at once. It also provides the full support of many offices on campus, including but not limited to, the Study Abroad Office, Registration and Records, Financial Aid Office and the Business Office.

The study abroad fee for affiliated and partner semester programs, as well as all short-term trips, is $250. Those who study abroad on a non-affiliated semester program pay a higher fee of $1,000. Students can pay their study abroad fee online, as a part of their post-approved, E-town study abroad application. Students who study abroad on more than one external program, only need to pay the study abroad fee once. Unless, they’re attending a non-affiliated semester program, the $1,000 fee is always required for those programs.

ScholarshipsAll students are encouraged to research study abroad scholarship opportunities at least six months in advance of their study abroad experience to ensure they do not miss any early application deadlines. You can review a list of study abroad scholarship opportunities on our website: https://www.etown.edu/offices/study-abroad/study-abroad-scholarships.aspx

$5,000 Gilman ScholarshipIf you’re a Federal Pell Grant recipient, you’re encouraged to apply for the Gilman Scholarship which awards up to $5,000 to each selected applicant. Students studying a critical language can apply for an additional $3,000 scholarship.

All students who apply for the Gilman Scholarship will automatically have their E-town study abroad fee waived (value of $250). Students eligible for the Gilman, just need to apply to receive the waiver. They do not need to be selected for the Gilman Scholarship to receive the waiver.
