Concrete is a heterogeneous construction material mainl/ composed o
water0 cement0 and aggregates0 usuall/ sand and gravel# !t has 1een used in
the construction o 1uildings and other inrastructures or as earl/ as the
Ba1/lonians2 and Eg/ptians2 time# Concrete can difer rom one to the other
depending on the amount and t/pe o its components# One can either alter
the t/pe and amount o the 1inding materials or the proportion o the
aggregates used# 3his stud/ ocuses on the evaluation o the possi1le efects
o using seawater during mixing and curing on the compressive strength o
the concrete using Sugarcane Bagasse Ash as an admixture#One o the most common concrete component that is altered is the
t/pe o 1inder or cement used# 3he most common 1inder used is the 4ortland
cement# As de.ned 1/ the American Societ/ or 3esting and Materials
5AS3M60 it is a 7h/draulic cement 5cement that not onl/ hardens 1/ reacting
with water 1ut also orms a water(resistant product6 produced 1/ pulveri8ing
clin9ers 5nodular material6 consisting essentiall/ o h/draulic calcium
silicates0 usuall/ containing one or more o the orms o calcium sulate as an
inter(ground addition: 5;ederal ,ighwa/ Administration <;,=A>0 %&))6# 3his
involves the 1urning o the 4ortland cement components in high temperature
changing their original chemical properties#?ue to the high cost in the production o 4ortland cement and its great
contri1ution to the car1on dioxide 5CO%6 emission0 a num1er o diferent
potential su1stitute or this 1inder have emerged# Some o these are
industrial 1/(products sometimes alread/ considered as wastes# Sugarcane
Bagasse Ash 5SCBA6 is a .1er(rich agricultural waste derived rom sugar cane

and alcohol industr/# As a wa/ o disposing these wastes0 these industries
1urned the 1agasse ash produced# ?ue to the continuousl/ increasing cost in
uel and electricit/0 certain studies were conducted and had shown that
these reuse could 1e used as uel to these production acilities 5Aig1odion0
,assan0 Ause0 @ /ior0 %&)&6# Another discover/ a1out this reuse ocuses on
its composition# On a recent stud/ conducted 1/ Rad9e 5%&)%60 she ound out
that the 1agasse ash has composition o materials almost the same as that
o a regular cement# She had suggested that 1agasse ash could 1e a
valua1le replacement to ordinar/ cement#Another component that can identi/ the concrete2s properties is the
t/pe o water used# 3he water to 1e used in the production o concrete can
contain impurities that can react destructivel/ to the components o the
cement used# !t has 1een researched that exposure o reinorced concrete to
saline water can 1e detrimental to the concrete2s perormance and
appearance# !t is due to the chemical reaction that happened 1etween the
salts o the water and the steel reinorced in the concrete# But certain studies
ound out that the use o seawater during the mixing and curing o the
concrete can 1ring improvement to it# =egian 5%&)&6 ound out on his stud/
that at certain curing periods0 the concrete can attain additional strength
rom seawater#
3he efects o using seawater on concrete needs additional attention
since it is said to 1e one o the actors on the deterioration o concrete# =ith
the world acing scarcit/ on water resources0 it is 1est to explore other
possi1le su1stitute on tap water in the production o concrete# Also0 since

almost *& o the earth2s surace is attri1uted to ocean and other large
1odies o water0 it is evident that these 1odies o water directl/ or indirectl/0
through the action o transport media li9e the wind0 afects a great num1er
o structures 5Mishra0 %&)%6# !t is also an issue on how to dispose solid
wastes produced in agricultural acilities or industries# Since it has 1een
proven that 1agasse ash produced rom sugarcane and alcohol industries has
properties similar to cement0 it can 1e used as a potential replacement to the
commonl/ used ordinar/ 4ortland cement 5O4C6# =ith this0 another
alternative use o these reuse can 1e made aside rom using it to uel these
industries# 3he stud/ will ocus on the efects o using seawater during mixing and
curing on the compressive strength onl/ o the concrete# Also0 the stud/ is
not concerned with the proportion and t/pe o aggregates to 1e used# 3he
standard procedure or the mix proportion to 1e prepared will 1e emplo/ed#! to 1e proven efective0 the use o tap water in construction purposes
can 1e minimi8ed thus helping in the conservation o water# =ith this0 the
use o water in agricultural means 5e#g# irrigation6 will 1e maximi8ed# Also
this stud/ can contri1ute on the maximi8ation o SCBA0 an agricultural
reuse0 thus minimi8ing and disposing the waste properl/# =ith this0
industries involved in the production o concrete can reduce their production
cost since these materials are readil/ availa1le# Also0 the emission o CO%
during the production o 4ortland cement can 1e minimi8ed thus contri1uting
in the protection o the environment#
